To think that "fanny" is not an offensive name for female genitalia ?

My ex was taken aside by our 3.5 yr old daughter's nursery key worker today, and told that they didn't like her using the word fanny, and that she should use the word noony instead?!

Is there a difference in offensiveness levels between these 2 names? Always thought that fanny was just a harmless kids name for vagina/vulva whatever, am I wrong?

Totally agree with Compos if they were suggesting a standard biological type name then maybe not a problem, but to make an issue over a little girl using a very commonly used and understood nickname and insist it's replaced with some made up, random word is total crap.
Oh and Mumsnet has taught me that it is a vulva NOT a vagina. I'm 37 and never knew this!

kissmyshineymetalass · 21/06/2012 01:58

Jamaicans say pum pum or narni.fanny sounds fine although I wouldn't use it myself

yellowraincoat · 21/06/2012 02:05

Noony ffs, I've never even heard that before.

Everyone knows what a fanny is, it's not the most pleasant word, but whatever. It's fine if she uses it.

I do wish there was an equivalent to willy.

bogeyface · 21/06/2012 02:16

Noony is stupid.

And Vagina is inaccurate.

Its an External Urethral Orifice, but I appreciate that that might be a bit of a mouthful so EUO would be an acceptable alternative.

bogeyface · 21/06/2012 02:17
Wink
izzyizin · 21/06/2012 02:43

EUO? Not to be confused with the band Roy Woods & Jeff Lynne set up

Krumbum · 21/06/2012 02:52

Noony is pathetic. Vulva or at least something funny like clunge!

blonderthanred · 21/06/2012 03:30

I think you should call the nursery every day with a new suggestion.

izzyizin · 21/06/2012 03:37

Clunge??!! Sounds like a fencing manouevre or a half-pipe aerial trick. Or a dance... anyone up for doing the clunge?

Whatmeworry · 21/06/2012 07:27

Yuck re noony.

Suggest Cunt - it's traditional Anglo Saxon, adapted from the Latin. Impeccable lineage.

It's another 'Mary' here.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 21/06/2012 07:54

Isn't a yum yum a small doughnut thing?

Wish there was a willy equivalent - quite like yoni but not heard it before and think you ought to use something people would understand without explanation or gesticulations. Hate the clinical terms but also the very twee Minnie, foo-foo, flower etc.

Think my DD will have to go with fanjo

HeadfirstForHalos · 21/06/2012 08:09

I think fanny is one of the vagina/vulva slangwords that are quite adult. We say fairy, never heard of noony though (think I prefer fanny!).

Other's use privates or bits arounf here.

RomancedbyRap · 21/06/2012 08:12

We say fanny and willy in my house though my eldest sometimes gets confused and says wally. Works for us.

Molehillmountain · 21/06/2012 08:15

I say stop fannying about all the time. I looked it up once and although I forget the specifics, in that context it has nothing to do with girls genetalia.

valiumredhead · 21/06/2012 08:17

They've been watching too much TOWIE Grin

accountantsrule · 21/06/2012 08:44

I wouldn't like to hear a child use it TBH.

Cockwomble · 21/06/2012 08:48

Tis a VAGINA.

Cockwomble · 21/06/2012 08:48

and boys have a PENIS

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 21/06/2012 09:01

I taught DS to say penis when he was two (sometimes also his "bits and bobs" from when he was a baby) but now for some reason he is saying tail. I suspect this is either the influence of his nursery or my mother, but he's not telling and I haven't caught anybody out yet.

I also think either vagina or vulva is okay but I've just never liked the sound of the word fanny, not even in Jane Austin novels. It sounds a bit harsh and scratchy to me.

squeakytoy · 21/06/2012 09:09

I can honestly say that (possibly because I have never actually given it much thought), until I joined here, I never really knew where the "vulva" was. On the rare occasion that I might be discussing my body parts I would probably say "my bits" or "down below". I can also say that this has never caused me a problem, or left the person I am talking to in any doubt as to where I am referring to.

I wouldnt like to hear a small child discussing their "fanny" just as I would not like to hear a child talking about their "cock".

ripsishere · 21/06/2012 09:17

Give her a range of words and choose one word a day for her genitalia.
Monday - Twat
Tuesday - gash
Wednesday - minge
Thursday - flange
Friday - cunt
and rotate them according to the weather.

KitCat26 · 21/06/2012 09:17

Don't like the word fanny - just reminds me of primary school boys.
Noony and foo foo sound equally ridiculous.
Vagina is wrong (its a vulva)
Vulva is annatomically correct.

But sounds odd for a 2 year old to say, especially when others use vagina thinking its the correct term.

We are dodging the minefield and calling DDs vulva her 'bits'. Equally lame though.

BonnieBumble · 21/06/2012 09:19

Where I come from Fanny was considered a mild swear word like twat.
