DH is very keen on us displaying a 'baby on board' sign in our rear window whenever we go out in the car with DS. He believes that drivers behind us will be much more considerate and not tailgate if they see this sign.

I think that most tailgaters don't understand why they're meant to be leaving a sensible stopping distance between them and the car in front, don't understand how their behaviour is potentially dangerous, and therefore I think that if a driver normally goes around tailgating the car in front, he's going to continue doing so whether or not there's a baby on board sign.

AIBU to think that these signs make no difference at all to other driver's behaviour?

i hate hate hate them but have one in my car because imho the other parent of my dc is a twat pmsl

EssentialFattyAcid · 20/06/2012 19:56

LST if you like your sticker that is reason enough - and imo the best reason to have one

Pompoko · 20/06/2012 19:58

I like my baby on board sign. It helps me find the right car on the street/ in the car park. That is the reason i brought it (plus it had simba on it) not trying to protect my dc with it

I thought you meant the ones for the tube. And just in case you are curious, nope, people still pretend they are sleeping/reading/using their mobile phones, all that just not to give up their seats.

misslinnet · 20/06/2012 20:20

You can get ones for the tube lovetomoan?

How're they meant to work?

In my third pregnancy I had a Mum to Be on Board sign in my car.

Because in my second pregnancy a lorry driver too lazy to use his hand break lost control of his lorry at a red light and killed my daughter by hitting the back of our car. She was born prematurely and died at two hours old.

A sign probably wouldn't have made any difference to that but having one in my next pregnancy gave me a little bit more confidence when I was out on the roads.

Before we moved I had to drive along the road where he hit us several times a week. When I saw the same lorry in the same place one day it made me feel sick and I had to turn off and wait until I thought it would be gone.

I had baby on board signs and even now a child on board sign in my car because of that man.

If there is the slightest possibility that the sign makes someone think about the risk they are posing to anyone else on the road then good.

We have a friend who's a fireman. He always tells people very forcefully to take the signs out when ther isn't a baby on board, so a fireman won't risk his life looking for a non existent infant in a blazing car.

Whatmeworry · 20/06/2012 20:44

I think it just makes people more likley to think you are a prat.

LST · 20/06/2012 20:45

whatme we've been through this...

Springforward · 20/06/2012 20:54

I'm not sure they make any difference. Certainly I tend not to plan to run into the back of any other car, sign or none.

Whatmeworry · 20/06/2012 20:56

whatme we've been through this...

And you will go through it again, and again...think of it as another vore on the prat-side.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 20/06/2012 20:59

I tend to keep my distance mainly because a baby on board sign indicates to me that there's a stressed out, sleep deprived parent driving the car in front... prone to erratic driving and likely to stop suddenly.

LST · 20/06/2012 21:05

Yes whatme because of prats.. Well said Wink

Poulay · 20/06/2012 21:07

I just think they are twat signs tbh.

bumbleymummy · 20/06/2012 21:10

I'm not sure I understand it for the emergency services. Surely the car seats show there are children on board? Confused

Figgygal · 20/06/2012 21:11

Thank god im not the Only 1 who thinks they are completely twatty, they drive me mad!!

LST · 20/06/2012 21:14

I honestly don't believe people judge a person so much by a sign in their car window.. You call them twats.... Really??

balotelli · 20/06/2012 21:20

They do make a difference.

I dont want to punch drivers of cars who dont have them.

LST · 20/06/2012 21:21

Come punch away. You sound like a swell person to know...

Whatmeworry · 20/06/2012 21:22

I honestly don't believe people judge a person so much by a sign in their car window.. You call them twats.... Really??

It combines PFB-ness, smugness, teeth grating moral high groundness and that sort of super-careful-work-the-route-out-the-day-before-and-wrap-the-baby-in-cotton-wool girl guideness, in one cheap, crappy plastic sign.

It is the very distilled essence of twat-ness ;)

Empusa · 20/06/2012 21:23

Bizarrely (IME) I've noticed that the drivers with those stickers tend to drive more dangerously (tailgating etc) so surely they can't be using the stickers to try and make it safer for their kids?

LST · 20/06/2012 21:23

I'm none of the above.. I just liked the sign. I'm just pleased I have better things to think about.

takingiteasy · 20/06/2012 21:39

I want an Irn Bru 'Fanny On Board' sign.

EssentialFattyAcid · 20/06/2012 22:00

LST what is it though about the sign that you like? It would be helpful if you could explain?

Purely aesthetics?
