to wonder if 'baby on board' signs make any diffference?

DH is very keen on us displaying a 'baby on board' sign in our rear window whenever we go out in the car with DS. He believes that drivers behind us will be much more considerate and not tailgate if they see this sign.

I think that most tailgaters don't understand why they're meant to be leaving a sensible stopping distance between them and the car in front, don't understand how their behaviour is potentially dangerous, and therefore I think that if a driver normally goes around tailgating the car in front, he's going to continue doing so whether or not there's a baby on board sign.

AIBU to think that these signs make no difference at all to other driver's behaviour?

I saw a new one yesterday which proclaimed " Breast fed baby on board".

JarethTheGoblinKing · 20/06/2012 19:21

I did notice ours making a difference, yes... they do seem to keep the tailgaters at bay.

I don't have one anymore though - drive a massive people carrier so there seems little point Grin

I think saying they make the driver look like an idiot is a little harsh Hmm it's not like they do any harm, is it.. ?

badgeroncaffeine · 20/06/2012 19:21

So only things that do harm make someone look like an idiot? Are you for real?

LST · 20/06/2012 19:22

If I didn't have a sense of humour. My 7mo DS wouldn't be holding a 2 chunks of cheese in his hands and squishing them into the poor cats tail now would he.. Grin

LST · 20/06/2012 19:23

I meant (obviously..) I don't understand why people are throwing them around because some people choose to put a sign indicating they have a child on board a car..

Calm down dear Wink

Midgetm · 20/06/2012 19:24

Have to agree that they just look twatish. People don't pay the blindest bit of notice of them. And don't get me started on princess on board. That makes me want to ram them.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 20/06/2012 19:24

What? Confused

JarethTheGoblinKing · 20/06/2012 19:24

badger was that to me?

LST · 20/06/2012 19:25

No jareth I don't think she likes me very much..

EssentialFattyAcid · 20/06/2012 19:26

To explain my "idiot" comment and apologise incidentally for offence caused - why would anybody modify their driving according to the age of the occupants of another vehicle? I mean, seriously?

JarethTheGoblinKing · 20/06/2012 19:27

I meant the one saying "So only things that do harm make someone look like an idiot? Are you for real?"

exoticfruits · 20/06/2012 19:27

The ones that I really hate are 'little princess on board'.

BabylannShallFall · 20/06/2012 19:27

People on this thread are being unnecessarily offensive, particularly the twat thing, which may as well be classed as a direct insult as a lot of people are going to have come to this thread who do have those signs.

And no. I don't think any parent thinks their children are more deserving of life than anyone else, I'm quite sure the point is to remind all drivers who are erratic or have road rage to carry on being careful as some cars have innocent children in, even if the driver did accidentally pull out in front of you.

Because there are some people in the world who will smash into your car if you've pissed them off.

The people who get so angry at the existence of said stickers should probably take up meditation or a chill pill.

thecook · 20/06/2012 19:27

When I was learning to drive my male instructor said 'Look at those pillocks in front with a Baby on Board sign, whenever you see that sign, speed up love'

I cannot see the point of them. It makes the car owner come over as a twat in my opinion.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 20/06/2012 19:27

EFA Grin Fair enough.

I dunno.. some people seem to though..

LST · 20/06/2012 19:28

essential my DP doesn't drive as fast when DS is in the car. He never speeds anyway but I think he takes more time ect

I don't drive so I don't know.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 20/06/2012 19:28

Bollocks.. I have been sucked in Wink

exoticfruits · 20/06/2012 19:28

I think that when the baby is not in the car they ought to come out-they rarely do.

LST · 20/06/2012 19:29

babylann my point exactly!

EssentialFattyAcid · 20/06/2012 19:31

LST the point of the signs is to influlence other people so driving differently when your own children are on board is surely beside the point?

LST · 20/06/2012 19:33

Well we just got one because we I liked it..

But DP does drive differently when DS is in the car.

EssentialFattyAcid · 20/06/2012 19:39

LST the point is that your dp drives differently with a baby in the car. Presumably this is still the case whether or not the sticker is also in the car?

LST · 20/06/2012 19:41

essential he would always drive differently with DS in the car regardless of the sticker.. But we will always have the sticker.. Because I like it.

AbyCat · 20/06/2012 19:42

I once had to point out to a friend that the three signs (princess, cheeky money & little fella on board - boak) she had in the back windscreen of her small Golf completely obscured the whole rear window. Turns out she hadn't noticed as she'd turned the rear view mirror so she could see the baby in the back & didn't use it to look behind her. Now that is seriously twattish.

LST · 20/06/2012 19:48

AbyCat that I agree is twatish.
