to wonder if 'baby on board' signs make any diffference?

DH is very keen on us displaying a 'baby on board' sign in our rear window whenever we go out in the car with DS. He believes that drivers behind us will be much more considerate and not tailgate if they see this sign.

I think that most tailgaters don't understand why they're meant to be leaving a sensible stopping distance between them and the car in front, don't understand how their behaviour is potentially dangerous, and therefore I think that if a driver normally goes around tailgating the car in front, he's going to continue doing so whether or not there's a baby on board sign.

AIBU to think that these signs make no difference at all to other driver's behaviour?

Your all twats

badgeroncaffeine · 20/06/2012 19:02

But we can at least spell the word "you're". D'oh!!

myhandslooksoold · 20/06/2012 19:03

Thank you. I was about to flounce there. The pet on board and show dog on board thing dates way back to the 1950s which is why you don't see them anymore.
There are many many useless things that are bought for a new baby, including baby baths, baby towels, cot bumpers, flashcards for newborns (how did our eyesight EVER develop before?) and those stupid signs are one of them "oh I've a new baby I must get one of those" type of items.

YANBU I'm a considerate driver but do occasionally feel irrationally like ploughing into cars with these - they seem to be saying 'the life of my child is far, far more precious than your life or that of any other driver', as if my response would be 'oh, well I was thinking of skidding into the back of you, unconcerned as I am about my pointless life but, now you mention your child, I won't do that'.

I agree that aggressive drivers will remain so regardless, in fact, since much of their motivation may be linked to impatience, they are more likely to try to get past a car with a sticker, assuming they'd be slow, so more likely to tailgate and intimidate.

sparking Grin

I am so tempted!

LST · 20/06/2012 19:08

I can't even spell sparkling

I suppose sparking looks like sparkles...

Sparklingbrook · 20/06/2012 19:10

It's fine LST. You can call me whatever you like as long as it's not sweary Grin

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 20/06/2012 19:12

lottiegb, exactly! 'Oh, I was going to just merrily plough into you, but now that I see you have a baby in the vehicle, I suppose I should reconsider'. Aaargh!

Sparklingbrook, furry steering wheel covers make me seriously irrationally angry. Hmm, this thread is probably not good for my blood pressure! Wink

exoticfruits · 20/06/2012 19:12

They make a huge difference- I think 'wow- no baby-I can drive too close and crash into that one!!'

badgeroncaffeine · 20/06/2012 19:13

Is LST the resident genius here? Blimey...!

LST · 20/06/2012 19:13

I also have a beware of the cats sign in my kitchen window!

Twat overload in our home!

LST · 20/06/2012 19:14

No badger.. But I do have a sense of humour Wink

MurderOfProse · 20/06/2012 19:15

The number of times I've been cut up, or overtaken at speed, or narrowly avoided being hit by cars with those stickers in the back.. have been tailgated by quite a few too. Not to mention huge versions of them on tiny cars that must surely obscure quite a bit of rear visibility.

Irony is clearly lost on some of these people.

badgeroncaffeine · 20/06/2012 19:16

Anyway, on the theme of losers, as a general rule any car sticker looks tragic. But two in particular, "baby/child on board" and pro-hunting "Countryside Alliance" stickers...definite muppet identifiers.

badgeroncaffeine · 20/06/2012 19:16

You have a sense of humour LST? That's good, when are we going to see it in action?

LST · 20/06/2012 19:17

Badger I have a sense of humour but there is no need to call me an idiot because of a sign I have in my car..

LST · 20/06/2012 19:18

And btw.. I'm not a 'plonker' Wink

EssentialFattyAcid · 20/06/2012 19:18

A agree that these stickers make the driver seem an idiot, nothing more

NCIS · 20/06/2012 19:18

People might be curious enough to tailgate so that they can read the sign, the last one I saw had small print at the bottom (I didn't get close enough to read what it said). I would rather people concentrated on driving and being on the ball than reading signs in the back of cars.

Have never thought of looking for a sign if I go to an RTC.

badgeroncaffeine · 20/06/2012 19:19

I don't recall calling anyone an "idiot", I think the word was "plonker"...it's more suitable in the circumstances.

So when's the sense of humour going to be displayed?

LST · 20/06/2012 19:20

An idiot really? I don't understand the insults!

badgeroncaffeine · 20/06/2012 19:20

Erm...you seem to be rather proving my initial point LST...
