How can Prince William campaign against rhino poaching when he happily kills other animals for sport?

I genuinely can't get my head around this. Am I missing something?

Which protected animals is he killing for sport?

LaurieFairyCake · 19/06/2012 11:02

Do you mean pheasants Confused

They kill them for sport but they are eaten.

AKMD · 19/06/2012 11:02

Rabbits etc. aren't a protected species. Rabbits are also quite tasty.

wastedwaist · 19/06/2012 11:02

Rhinos are an endangered animal who are being killed for their horns who some believe have magical medicinal properties.
Deer, pheasants etc are not endangered and so killing them is jolly good fun.
(apparantly)

AKMD · 19/06/2012 11:02

Mmm pheasant

Funsponge · 19/06/2012 11:02

Rhinos aren't generally eaten for dinner.

AnyoneForTennis · 19/06/2012 11:02

We are all as guilty!!!

Hammy02 · 19/06/2012 11:02

He seems an intelligent bloke. Surely he can see the irony of choosing to campaign against the killing of any type of animal when he does something as abhorrent as hunting when the majority of the public are against it.

OP posts:
AKMD · 19/06/2012 11:02

Mmm venison casserole

AnyoneForTennis · 19/06/2012 11:03

Of killing I mean!

StepOutOfSpring · 19/06/2012 11:03

YANBU

AnyoneForTennis · 19/06/2012 11:03

What does he hunt?

UnChartered · 19/06/2012 11:03

speak for yourself Anyone

i've never killed an animal for sport, and now wouldn't kill one for food either

WheresMrMonkey · 19/06/2012 11:05

Killing ANY animal has to be seen equally surely??

megandraper · 19/06/2012 11:05

A lot of meat-eaters are against the poaching of endangered animals, OP.

Just because they don't kill the animal themselves, doesn't make their position different to Prince W's.

I don't see any double standard.

Funsponge · 19/06/2012 11:05

Amd of course killing rhinos isn't done for fun but for profit. Maybe thats why.

DivineInspiration · 19/06/2012 11:05

I eat meat, yet am vehemently opposed to the killing of endangered monkeys and apes for bushmeat. I don't see a contradiction there and whilst I don't support fox-hunting I don't see one in campainging against killing rhinos for horn whilst killing non-endangered foxes as 'sport'.

AnyoneForTennis · 19/06/2012 11:05

Unchartered so you dont kill headlice then? They are a living creature......

Hammy02 · 19/06/2012 11:06

Wild boar, stag???

OP posts:
AKMD · 19/06/2012 11:07

Mmm crispy fried headlice. Joking!

Fox hunting is illegal. Can you imagine the headlines if PW was caught doing it?! They hunt scented handkerchiefs don'tchaknow?

AKMD · 19/06/2012 11:07

IIRC wild boar are culled quite regularly and deer are pests.

LtEveDallas · 19/06/2012 11:07

"Surely he can see the irony of choosing to campaign against the killing of any type of animal"

Not 'any kind of animal', just endangered species.

Rhinos aren't bred for food or sport. Deer and Pheasant etc are.

Rhinos aren't eaten, they are poached/killed for their horns.

Understandable for you to be upset if you are vegetarian/vegan OP, but unreasonable if not.

UnChartered · 19/06/2012 11:07

i said i don't kill for sport or food

no mention of parasites in my post Hmm

ExitPursuedByABear · 19/06/2012 11:09

When does he go hunting?

If you are referring to pheasant shoots, I hardly think that can be classed in the same category as rhino poaching.

buttonmoon78 · 19/06/2012 11:10

Hunting animals for sport nowadays is very closely linked with conservation. But because it's politically incorrect to say so it's not publicised.

There are many animal/bird populations which are kept in check by hunting, thus ensuring that the remaining animals are safe and healthy and have enough to eat. Some countries use former poachers as hunters to ensure the animal's death is as quick and painless as possible.

Rhinos are endangered and it's good that a high profile person is highlighting the need for extra protection.
