I genuinely can't get my head around this. Am I missing something?

The wildlife that isn't shot benefits? Never heard of poisons, snares and traps on shooting estates then? Of course it's not only wild animals, including protected badgers, who are cruelly injured and killed by these, but plenty of domestic pets, such as cats, have too.

Income. This has already been discussed up-thread. Profit before decency.

Since when have poison, snares and traps been part of hunting for sport? Am Confused. I thought I'd read all the posts but I've clearly missed some.

Buttonmoon, they're part of 'sport' shooting. Every shooting estate uses indiscriminate methods, such as poisons, snares and traps. Tragic for badgers, deer, hare, rabbits, hedgehogs, birds and many, many domestic pets - there are plenty of cases of cats being snared. It's insane. I'd love snares to become illegal (although plenty of illegal snares are set on UK shooting estates, including one owned by the Royal Family).

It's to protect the young birds from predators.
