To tell SIL to stay away if she can't be civil

Everytime she visits she calls DD "old woman Gladys". I was never funny and now, 9 months on it's just plain irritating. Would it be an over reaction to tell her if she can't act like a grown up she can just stay away because I can't be arsed to deal with her?

Is her name Gladys?

HappyCamel · 17/06/2012 22:12

YANBU, that's very rude, maybe make that explicit to her "I find that rude, please don't call my daughter that again" give her a chance and then take it from there if you need to.

usualsuspect · 17/06/2012 22:12

Why does she call her that?

scuzy · 17/06/2012 22:12

i dont get it why would she call her that is it an insult?

WorraLiberty · 17/06/2012 22:13

Errm...is it ok if I laugh? Blush

I don't know

Who is 'Gladys' and why was it never funny?

pumpkinsweetie · 17/06/2012 22:14

Is that all she does though?, or is there other irrating stuff she says ir does?
Tbh if thats all she does i would just ignore it as it probably a joke or nickname she has for your dd.
I call one of my nieces a little old woman as for a toddler she is very clever

squeakytoy · 17/06/2012 22:14

if that is the only thing, then it seems a bit OTT to ban her..

scuzy · 17/06/2012 22:14

i still dont get it .... ????

WorraLiberty · 17/06/2012 22:15

Mine were nicknamed Spikey, Fat Pants and Joosters.

usualsuspect · 17/06/2012 22:15

My DS looked like a little old man when he was a baby tbh Grin

ceeveebee · 17/06/2012 22:15

I'm assuming your DD is called Gladys and SIL thinks its an old lady name? In which case she is a rude cow, tell her to stop it.

If not then I too am Confused!

FrankieAnne · 17/06/2012 22:16

It's a dig at me because I chose her name. It's her way of saying "I'll make sure you regret they day you went against me".

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 17/06/2012 22:19

In what way did you 'go against' her? Confused

It's not nice to take the piss out of the name to be honest

Though I do suspect you may have to eventually grow a thicker skin in the future...as will Gladys.

longjane · 17/06/2012 22:20

Well you chose her name
your daughter and you and going to judge on it for the rest of your daughter life
get over it

your parent now you are always going to judge on actions
just read mumsnet.

WipsGlitter · 17/06/2012 22:20

So her name is Gladys?

misslinnet · 17/06/2012 22:21

Does she know just how much it's bothering you?

Is it possible that you've been too polite when expressing your annoyance in the past, and she doesn't realise just how serious you're being?

And why would she think that she should get a say in what her niece is called anyway?

squeakytoy · 17/06/2012 22:21

to be fair, it is a very oldfashioned name, and not one that is back in vogue... Confused

FrankieAnne · 17/06/2012 22:22

Yes her name is Gladys. She is named after someone very special.

OP posts:
MsKittyFane · 17/06/2012 22:22

If your DD is called Gladys and she is insulting her name then tell her.
SIBU.
Tell her you think it's rude.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 17/06/2012 22:22

i like that name. Smile

you sil iis being rude to your dd. if it is upsetting your dd tell her to stop or she is not welcome anymore as no-one has the right to upset a child.

MsKittyFane · 17/06/2012 22:22

X post!

RightBuggerforit · 17/06/2012 22:22

Wow, Gladys? Even so, SIL is being really rude and I'd tell her to eff off as well.

Purplehonesty · 17/06/2012 22:23

What's her name? Nickname her bitter Betty or twisted tess and see how she likes it!!

CharltonHairstyle · 17/06/2012 22:23

Tell her to piss off.

I think it's a lovely name Smile

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 17/06/2012 22:24

so what if it is an older name that has not come back yet, you are setting a trend. is still does not give anyone the right to bully a child by making fun of them repeatedly.
