And they are not American/Canadian but British!?

I know I probably am being U but its really starting to grate on me, on texts, in emails, on FB, should I call them on it?? It's MUM ffs!!

OP posts:
NutmegKate · 13/06/2012 12:24

Well, I'm northern scum but around here Mum is the norm, occasionally Mam. My female parent is from a Geordie family and they all say Mam.

Mom does my head in. I can't help it, it just does.

Also 'gotten'. No British person I ever heard used to say that when I was younger. I know that it is irrational. I know that IABU to let it bother me but it really, really does annoy me. Also the way 'harassment' has changed pronunciation since I was a child ( I blame Frank Spencer for that ). And the fact that, at one point, my son thought that if he needed to call the emergency services he should call 911

CurrySpice · 13/06/2012 12:27

Nutmeg - I'll be doing your head in then Hmm

NutmegKate · 13/06/2012 12:39

Very possibly. But I'm generally frightfully well behaved and just seethe inwardly.

OTOH, I dare say that there are loads of things that I do or say that wind other people up. It's the way of the world, I guess.

CurrySpice · 13/06/2012 12:41

Apart from here presumabaly where you say outright how it annoys you amongst all the people who use it!!

NutmegKate · 13/06/2012 12:45

Oh, blimey. Sorry, I take it all back. 'Twas my first post and a bit of a tongue in cheek rant. I guess I'll just go back to lurking.

bejeezusWC · 13/06/2012 12:50

Ah nutmeg dont be put off...i find 'Chat' much nicer than AIBU...its not so argumentative

pantylace · 13/06/2012 12:53

Hi NutmegKate. Welcome to the forum, now that you've de-lurked. Stay awhile. Added your opinion. We all do. Not everyone agrees. That's ok. You have not been personal or rude to anyone. You're doing ok though a little to quick to hide away. The board can be a little intimidating at first but you'll get the hang of it and not feel the need to justify yourself to everyone who doesn't like what you have added. Try not to take these light less serious threads to heart.

squoosh · 13/06/2012 12:53

Nutmeg totally agree with you on the 'gotten' issue. See also 'snuck'.

pantylace · 13/06/2012 12:54

I should review before posting!

squoosh · 13/06/2012 12:54

Even typing the letters s.n.u.c.k together make me a bit snarly.

pantylace · 13/06/2012 12:55

I can't stand Fink! WTF? It's think FGS!

NutmegKate · 13/06/2012 13:02

Thanks all.

I shouldn't have been surprised really - it just felt a bit 'full on'. I have been lurking for a while to get used to the place and learn the ropes, so to speak.

I won't hide away, I'm not such a delicate flower as that. I may well, however, take your advice bejeezusWC and stick to 'Chat' in the future.

Tangointhenight · 13/06/2012 13:03

Curry it annoys me too, hence the original post :o

Nutmeg stay, I like the fact that I'm not the only one it grates on, this was intended as a lighthearted ranty post so people with their knickers on a twist should untwist!

OP posts:
PrettyPrinceofParties · 13/06/2012 13:04

Ok Tango. My 'Chill out' was in response to you being 'ragey'.

Incidentally, if I was referring to someone else's mother then it would be mum, but my 'mum' is mom. Grin clear as mud!

Another midland joke: why has the queen got so many kids? Because she' got E.R on her knickers

Tangointhenight · 13/06/2012 13:04

*in a twist

OP posts:
Tangointhenight · 13/06/2012 13:05

Haha pretty, I think I should've replaced 'ragey'with irked.

UnChartered · 13/06/2012 13:09

how d'ya like them apples, huh?

nice bit o' western east anglian there for ya!

and DH is an ancient salopian - mom all the way there

CurrySpice · 13/06/2012 13:09

Oh Crikey Nutmeg - don't go. I wasn't feeling arsey although I sounded it.

PrettyPrinceofParties · 13/06/2012 13:10

No probs, sometimes difficult to judge how serious or tongue in cheek people are being. We need extensive tone of voice emoticons!

NutmegKate · 13/06/2012 13:13

CurrySpice -all good. It is just this is a favourite rant of mine and my family are sick of hearing it. I got carried away with the prospect of a new audience.

And I haven't even worked out how to use the existing smilies yet.

PrettyPrinceofParties · 13/06/2012 13:13

Ooh, I'm liking 'murm', unchartered. Sounds like a soft drink from Futurama.

Grin i'd rather be a dry, sparkling alcoholic beverage if you don't mind Grin

Tangointhenight · 13/06/2012 13:35

Rabbitee is that the royal we? Because you are the only one to suggest you are fucked off so far. In fact mist people have explained that in actual fact its not just an Americanism, so the post had actually been informative.

And no I didn't search because it is my rant for the day, why should I search first before I post, just because 5 years ago someone else posted about it.
