It just got me thinking...

Does anyone know, or has anyone heard any man express a big preference either way?

I hear a lot about 'men' especially those under 30 'expecting' women to be pubic hair free but sadly not knowing many men under 30 I have no idea if this is true.

In my youth, lads used to joke about preferring a 'shaven haven' but IMO they were so thankful to be allowed near a woman's nether regions, that in reality they were none too fussy. Other than that I've never heard anyone express a definite preference

Just curious (and apologise about the whole thread from a thread thing)

....whether if you were one, you'd understand better what a social norm is, as you clearly don't.

catgirl1976 · 30/05/2012 09:52

No - sorry - you clearly don't.

I could send you some really good books if you would like to find out more?

TheGrandOldDuke · 30/05/2012 09:53

It's alright thanks, I have plenty from my anthropology degree.

catgirl1976 · 30/05/2012 09:54

Yeah..course you do

TheGrandOldDuke · 30/05/2012 09:55

No joke. In fact I can lend you some if you like?

TheGrandOldDuke · 30/05/2012 09:58

Certainly nearing that!!! I must perform some sort of foliage control before holiday next week....I've been inspired by this thread!

catgirl1976 · 30/05/2012 09:58

They can't be very good if they have left you ignorant of what a social norm is so I will pass thank you.

Social norms relate to behaviours within groups. They do not have to be the most prevelant to qualify as a norm.

But of course you know that already from you amazing degree that you made up

TheGrandOldDuke · 30/05/2012 10:00

Haha jealous much? Cambridge no less Wink

catgirl1976 · 30/05/2012 10:00

Am I meant to be impressed? Confused

Slow hand clap for you......

TheGrandOldDuke · 30/05/2012 10:03

No I really couldn't give a flying monkey what you think Grin
I just think you're wrong re social norms but we can agree to differ; I like a debate.
I just know I'm right Grin

catgirl1976 · 30/05/2012 10:03

Ah but you can't be Grin

Because I am Grin

TheGrandOldDuke · 30/05/2012 10:04

Sorry for hijacking your thread OP. No more tatt-talk from me. Pubes only.

NurseBernard · 30/05/2012 10:07

Getting back to fanjo hair, although I'm a short back and sides type myself, I would never go down the landing strip route as I actually think they look ludicrously contrived. I predict, and you heard it here first Grin that they will look laughably dated in another 30 years.

Something else that occurred to me in light of the 'good, clean sex' comment - what with the porn-influenced generation finding anal sex de rigeur - isn't it slightly ironic that young blokes have no qualms; nay actively want to, um, put it up the Gary, and yet are completely repelled by a few pubic hairs?! Something is seriously awry with that... Confused Hmm

OTheHugeManatee · 30/05/2012 10:08

I can't believe I actually woke up thinking about this debate today.

Ultimately surely it's just like gardening? Some people like formal rows of box hedges, geometric beds and neat topiary, and some people like climbers, trailers and herbaceous borders. Some people don't care at all and are content to live in a nettle-filled jungle.

Of course there are social factors that influence that preference, but ultimately it's a matter of personal taste and while I'm within my rights to be privately sniffy about someone else's approach it's a bit rude to tell them so to their face.

NurseBernard · 30/05/2012 10:14

Yebbut, there's no faces on Mumsnet. People are way, way more honest on here. Wink It's an anonymous discussion forum after all.

Laquitar · 30/05/2012 10:16

In my case dh strongly prefers natural and i prefer waxed, especially in the summer. I've been shaving in the '80s. He is the only one all my exs prefered waxed. When he told me it was like expressing a bizzare fetish, i remember calling my friends to tell them this and they were surprised too.

It was 13 years ago, both late thirties but 'young ones', we were in Aya Nappa were everything was bare.

oooohhhhyes · 30/05/2012 10:20

Quite glad to see all these threads as it's been something I've been wondering about for some time. I'm quite glad to know there's variety out there - been in relationship for 20 years and about to break free, so wondered what the norm was - aparently there isn't one! Grin

Quite understand that cultural/religious practices vary. But I don't think that it is the main reason that increasing numbers of women in western societies appear to be removing hair.

PandaWatch · 30/05/2012 10:50

Having read through this thread I haven't seen one post from someone who does shave who does so because they have been pressured by a man. I first started shaving when I was about 18 (12 years ago) after reading about it in some magazine, thinking "hmm...maybe I'll give that a try" and feeling a lot more comfortable with it. This was when I was single and therefore a man's opinion didn't come into it.

For all those saying it's unnatural to shave, how many of you shave/wax your legs and underarms, pluck your eyebrows etc?

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 30/05/2012 12:16

"Having read through this thread I haven't seen one post from someone who does shave who does so because they have been pressured by a man."

But there has been quite a few posts from women who were told that they should shave (there was even one bloke who left in disgust - the poster said that she hopes "his knob drops off").

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 30/05/2012 12:23

(I also suspect that the group of men who prefer shaved ones feature men who've used too much porn or are closet paedos.)

You might want to explain where that leaves bi and lesbian women who prefer nude....?

Not really, no. Because the OP was asking about men's opinions.

AnneofGreenFables · 30/05/2012 12:24

at the idea of 'good clean sex', conjours up images of people bleaching the bed before and afterwards.

Sex should always be good but IMO the only time it's clean as well is if you're doing it in the bath or shower!!

Interesting that there's so many preferences for all manner of different pube hair-dos, clearly it's just like everything else, personal preference!

Although have to say the idea of refusing to have sex with someone because they don't meet your 'pubic standards' is really quite shit. How would those men like it if you'd brought a tape measure along and said "I'm sorry, but I only have sex with men of 8 inches or above, so if you don't measure up, I'm off". When it comes to clothes off, surely you should be so caught up in lust that you don't pause to bring out a checklist!!!! Grin
