so I know whether I value your opinion on any given topic, or whether I will just humour you

I am working class, just so you know. Although 'I pass' for MC, so I may be moving amongst you undetected. be afraid

TantrumsAndBalloons · 30/05/2012 07:55

So if you eat chips or ready made meals you are WC and if you hand weave your own lentils then you are what?
A pretentious MC twat?

I'm do glad I'm what married would consider WC

summerintherosegarden · 30/05/2012 08:09

latara my Mum came from an UC family and she always said loo, not toilet.

I consequently said loo as child and carried on doing so until I moved to the states and was met with the blankest face of my life when asking someone for "loo roll"

festereagain · 30/05/2012 09:20

what do they call loo roll in the States? I must know, in case the need ever arises Smile

bejeezusWC · 30/05/2012 09:27

WC food,hmm.....

kebabs????

there are alot of misconceptions which do really annoy me...

along with the MC ownership of things, especially around parenting; like breast-feeding, cooking from scratch (for babies or yourselves), co-sleeping, playing out in the woods, growing your own vegetables etc etc. All been done and being done by WC people worldwide, in some cases because it is the cheapest option/there is no choice

Then MCers come along, stick a label on it (I give you Baby Lead Weaning), write a book about it and think it is a MC approach to life and the rest of us.....live on kebabs????? Confused

OP posts:
festereagain · 30/05/2012 09:33

what, and 'WC people' whoever they are, never label things/practices? Catch yourself on, bejeezus....!! Labelling behaviours is a universal, and a universal unpleasantness at that....

bejeezusWC · 30/05/2012 09:36

are you thinking of something(s) in particular fester?

OP posts:
festereagain · 30/05/2012 09:38

not at all, that's just the point. It sounded there like only MC people label, but I don't think that's true.

LST · 30/05/2012 09:55

No only twats label....

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 30/05/2012 10:03

Baby led weaning makes me laugh. Its what people have been doing for ever and someone has slapped a label on it and made a killing.

I looked on a website and it was hilarious, it was like a competition. My baby ate a leg o lamb at 6 months etc etc.

Don't think it's particularly class related?

alistron1 · 30/05/2012 10:14

I'm as common as fucking muck.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 30/05/2012 10:23

I like unconditional parenting and attachment parenting

I don't think we had that 14 years ago, I just used to be a parent??
And co sleeping, isn't that just putting your Dc in bed with you do you can actually sleep?

  • disclaimer, I'm not saying this is a MC OR W. thing, just an observation :)
Lueji · 30/05/2012 10:26

I don't care if you are WC or MC or even UP here.

I will only respect your opinion if you spell and use grammar properly.

And if you use txt spk, then don't even bother writing.

Grin
bejeezusWC · 30/05/2012 10:29

tantrums exactly!! I get inexplicable and out of proportion mad about Unconditional Parenting/ Attachment Parenting/CoSleeping/Baby Lead Weaning/ even allotmenting

Is it not MC? I think it is..

OP posts:
Latara · 30/05/2012 10:29

Summer - good. I will call the toilet 'the loo' safe in the knowledge that it's a posh thing to do.
(assuming UC is Upper Class & not UnderClass...?)

I have to confess that i used to dress like a chav but that was when chavs didn't exist - i've got a photo of me age 20 in 1997 wearing a tight Adidas top with jeans; 4 hoop earrings, & chunky chain necklace & bracelets.
Actually i looked ok.
And really thin.
Aarrrggghhhh i'm off to the gym!!!

alistron1 · 30/05/2012 10:30

Working class food is anything you can take down't pit with you. Preferably with no instructions on the packaging, or the need for a recipe 'cos obvs we can't fucking read.

alistron1 · 30/05/2012 10:32

Bejeezus, you know them women that live on the developing world who sling/co sleep/breast feed/grow their own etc are they middle class?

cochonette · 30/05/2012 10:36

Seriously..? WHY is everyone SOooooo utterly obsessed with class on MN? there seem to be several new threads daily started with an ostensibly innocent OP questioning what makes us all middle class, or some derivative of, which is evidently just yet another invitation for everyone to jump on and start proving their middle class credentials in thinly veiled, gloating and competitive terms.

it is just nauseating to read...!

Latara · 30/05/2012 10:38

I met a friend in Starbucks for lunch once before going to work.
My friend was doing Baby Led Weaning with her 14 month old daughter.
Sorry but can they rename it 'Baby Led to Make a Disgusting Mess in Front of People Trying to Eat Lunch?'
I went to work hungry that day & over £5 poorer. Thanks Baby Led Weaning Types. :(

bejeezusWC · 30/05/2012 10:41

no, alistron that was my point....people do it/have done it since time began

Its not a 'parenting approach' or a 'philosophy'....its just being a parent. But people wear it to define what kind of people they are; My babies sleep in my bed, all our food is homecooked, we grow our own veg (as have generations of my family) but if anyone asks me if I 'wear my babies' or 'co-sleep' or do 'attachment parenting' I would say no.....

maybe it isnt a MC thing...that was my impression, from teh people I have come across that talk very loudly about this kind of stuff

OP posts:
PooshTun · 30/05/2012 10:41

"I think we need definitive MN criteria so we are quite clear on what makes us MC or WC..."

Apparently, if you like risotto then that marks you as MC. To me risotto is just soggy rice so, not that there was any doubt in my mind, I guess that makes me WC.

bejeezusWC · 30/05/2012 10:43

food I remember from my childhood is corn beef hash and bread and dripping....is that WC food? maybe its northern food? or just food?

there is loads more different types of food available now than there was 20 or 30 years ago

OP posts:
PooshTun · 30/05/2012 10:44

"just yet another invitation for everyone to jump on and start proving their middle class credentials in thinly veiled, gloating and competitive terms"

I don't think that we were on the same thread because the majority of my posters seemed deteremined to prove how working class they were despite having degrees and highly paid jobs.

bejeezusWC · 30/05/2012 10:44

Oooooo....and Sops!

OP posts:
Tortington · 30/05/2012 10:47

there is a distinct decline of the Workin classes becuase middle classdom is seen as something to aspire too

i think the real question should ask why that is.

why would you want to pass for MC?

i'd rather shag a lampost

PooshTun · 30/05/2012 10:47

"I will call the toilet 'the loo' safe in the knowledge that it's a posh thing to do."

Latara - The 'posh' thing to do is not to mention anything to do with bodily functions :) I like how Americans on TV talk about 'powdering their noses'
