To think 8.30 on a Sunday morning is too early for DIY?

New neighbours just moved in and they started scraping walls and hammering at 8.30 this morning. Weekdays wouldn't bother me. Saturdays wouldn't really bother me that much but surely Sunday is the one day you should be able to have a lie-in? Personally I wouldn't do anything noisy until 10.00am at the earliest.

OP posts:

my neigbour was out with a shovel scraping his path at 7.30 last sunday. I wanted to present him with a shovel......

AgentZigzag · 27/05/2012 11:52

Too early.

Is it a one off thing they really want to get finished though?

If they're normally OK I could let it go, if it's regular words are going to have to be had - maybe at 6.30am next sunday morning?

StepOutOfSpring · 27/05/2012 11:56

Too early unless it's a one-off.

upahill · 27/05/2012 12:02

No I don't think so tbh.

Anything after 8.00 would be ok IMO.

Not that I do, Builders I have don't tend to do Sundays.

valiumredhead · 27/05/2012 12:50

Dh was mowing the lawn at 8am - I reminded him that it was a tad early for a Sunday Grin

ll31 · 27/05/2012 12:51

dont' think its too early

TotemPole · 27/05/2012 12:52

Too early.

At least after 10 on a Sunday.

PinkChampagneandStrawberries · 27/05/2012 12:56

yanbu it is too early but as they have just moved in I would let it go this one time Smile

GnomeDePlume · 27/05/2012 12:56

I dont think it was too early, they probably wanted to get work done before it got too hot.

RuleBritannia · 27/05/2012 12:56

Hasn't it occurred to the OP that the new neighbours might go to work (Work? Goodness me!) and have only Sundays on which they can carry out DIY?

As for Totempole's idea of doing it after 10.00am on a Sunday, dressing properly and going to church will take out a chunk of the day if work on the house needs to be done.

I have been known to carry out pruning at 9.30pm. Ok it's a quiet job but neighbours still hear noises in the garden.

scuzy · 27/05/2012 12:57

only for the weather i would say yanbu. but everyone is up taking advantage of the weather so perhaps they will get everyting done and be finished soon. you were prob awake anyways am i right? hard to sleep in with this weather. its gorgeous!

nowadoubledee · 27/05/2012 12:58

I dont think it's too early. look at it from their perspective, they probably don't want to be doing it either but sometimes you can't be that choosey about when jobs like that get done. Give them a break

AgentZigzag · 27/05/2012 13:00

It might be the only time the neighbours can get the work done RuleBrittania, but that's nothing to do with the OP and shouldn't involve disturbing her kip.

scuzy · 27/05/2012 13:00

they have just moved in also ... why not take the chance to introduce yourself with a cool bottle of minerals or something (and also for a nose) Wink

scuzy · 27/05/2012 13:01

but its 8.30! not 6.30 ... give them a break.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 27/05/2012 13:01

I think it's too early for a Sunday, I wouldn't start until 9 - I've usually been awake since 6 wanting to make a start, so waiting until 9 is the best I can do Grin Though if I knew it bothered my neighbours I'd restrain myself until later I guess, but mine are quite early risers too.

However, as yours have just moved in I assume they are keen to 'make it home' and I'd forgive them for a few weekends :)

LST · 27/05/2012 13:03

YABU. They might want to get their house straight. It's not like it's going to be every Sunday.

SauvignonBlanche · 27/05/2012 13:23

YAB a bit U, it's not that bad.
I have to admit after 9am would be more civilised though.

thebody · 27/05/2012 13:31

Well I usually so soused on a sat night that am earthquake wouldn't wake me Sunday morning.

Na 8.30 is ok. They may have limited time to do DIY.

DublinMammy · 27/05/2012 13:34

YANBU that is too early and very selfish of them.

Annunziata · 27/05/2012 13:36

YANBU- it's so hot right now that they might have wanted to get it done early.

Annunziata · 27/05/2012 13:36

Oops YABU.

squeakytoy · 27/05/2012 13:49

8.30 is not too early at all.. and as mentioned, it is so hot that it is better to get work done early before it gets too hot to work. My husband was at work at 5am this morning so that they could be finished by lunchtime.

evilgiraffe · 27/05/2012 13:51

YABU. 9am would be more reasonable, but 8.30am is hardly the crack of dawn, and they've only just moved in. If it's every weekend for weeks and weeks, then fine, but this doesn't seem worth noticing, never mind complaining about.

bochead · 27/05/2012 13:52

8.30 on a Sunday morning is fine - so long as you've OK'd it with the neighbours first.

Maybe it's years of living in a block of flats full of familes (so someone is always on a night shift, or has a young baby or illness in the family etc), but don't people politely warn the neighbours a day or two before for routine DIY? A wee bit of consideration can prevent untold resentment building up.

Maybe I just have the nicest neighbours in the UK, but the only time we don't check it's OK with each other is in the case of genuine emergency leaks etc (in which case on the neighbours is likely to lend a hand anyway).

There's a reason "manners" were invented.

ps
I hope people are checking their neighours washing lines before firing up the BBQ today too!
