To think 8.30 on a Sunday morning is too early for DIY?

New neighbours just moved in and they started scraping walls and hammering at 8.30 this morning. Weekdays wouldn't bother me. Saturdays wouldn't really bother me that much but surely Sunday is the one day you should be able to have a lie-in? Personally I wouldn't do anything noisy until 10.00am at the earliest.

It's a bit of a pain, but not worth falling out over. Presumably this doesn't happen week in, week out? Makes a lot of sense to get going early if it's as hot there as it is here too. The thing with DIY, is that most people have ot work around their working hours - presumably if they were both at home all wekk, then they would prefer to do it 1am - 5pm weekdays, but life's not like that for most of us.

AlpinePony · 27/05/2012 14:37

Sadly, the world doesn't revolve around your lie-ins.

BackforGood · 27/05/2012 14:37

Also, the fact that you choose your lie-ins on a Sunday morning isn't their fault. Personally, I'm up at 8.30 on a Sunday to get reay for church, but try as often as I can to lie in on a Saturday. You can't really expect new neighbours to know everyone's preferences.

willyoustillloveme · 27/05/2012 14:41

I wouldn't like it - after 9 would be more considerate.

slowestwildebeast · 27/05/2012 14:44

they could have asked though.
I lived in a terrace and told neighbours about moving in party. It is common courtesy.
Yanbu. I work nights sometimes, it would hardly be great to start my hoovering at 5am while my bodyclock is off. Luckily I do no hoovering. :)

MarySA · 27/05/2012 14:47

Personally I think it is too early. On Sundays I think 10 am is a civililsed hour for mowing and DIY. But if they've just moved in they will have a lot of jobs to do. But if they are chronic DIYers it will be irritating.

AgentZigzag · 27/05/2012 15:02

'Sadly, the world doesn't revolve around your lie-ins.'

And that's what's wrong with the world Grin

sensuallettuce · 27/05/2012 15:04

It's illegal to do noisy DIY on a Sunday in Germany Grin

madwomanintheattic · 27/05/2012 15:10

Yup it is. But when we came from Germany to Canada for a holiday at Christmas, the tour company explained that the building work opposite the hotel started between 6 and 7 am every morning, including Christmas day. Grin

Personally I would go for 9am on a Sunday, but what's 30 minutes between friends? The snow shovelers here come from 6.30am when there is fresh snowfall, and there's nothing like the scrape of metal on frozen driveway to make you want to stay in bed...

SootySweepandSue · 27/05/2012 15:10

Until I had DC I would have said too early, but now 830 to me is already quite late in the day. I can only dream of actual lie-ins. It wouldn't bother me.

SootySweepandSue · 27/05/2012 15:12

Although our binmen come at 530am which I think is a bit too early Smile.

MummyDoIt · 27/05/2012 15:15

I certainly won't be falling out with them over it!!! I've spoken to them a few times and they seem lovely people, plus I'm sure it's just a case of having to get lots of things done as they've just moved in. It just seemed a little ironic that they've been quiet as mice every morning that we've had to be up for school - they've taken time off work to settle in so have been home for the past fortnight - yet the one Sunday of the year that my DSs chose to sleep late, the neighbours woke me up! Normally I doubt I'd even have noticed as we're usually up at 7.00 whatever the day but the DSs have had a couple of bad nights sleep with the heat and we were, for once, having a lie-in. Sod's law! They'll probably be totally silent from now on.

Oh yes, Sooty I agree with that. Every flipping Monday I get woken up by our binmen at about 5.40 Angry
Don't know why they can't change the direction they go round their round (IYSWIM) every 6 months or so, so those who get woken at some ungodly hour only get it for 1/2 the time, and those that get blocked in along narrow residential roads in rush hour only get it for 1/2 the year, etc., etc. Or, to be fair, I don't know why they don't just work 'normal' working hours. I can't see why anyone needs their bin emptying that early Confused.

batsintheroof · 27/05/2012 19:07

8.30? Wow by that time on a Sunday I've hoovered mowed lawn washed up and onto a well deserved cup of tea. I'm not bothered about neighbours and they wouldn't even cross my mind. I'm just living my life. :s

StepOutOfSpring · 27/05/2012 19:13

"I'm not bothered about neighbours and they wouldn't even cross my mind."

Hmm
batsintheroof · 27/05/2012 19:15

Hahaha it's not like I have all night raves or anything :D

orienteerer · 27/05/2012 19:16

YABU, but perhaps 9am as compromise

Bit of a difference between 9.45p, and 5.30 SugarPaste
I think you are the one being unreasonable there.

I can hear neighbours around the corner doing gardening stuff and it has never occured to me to be bothered.
If it was 10.45pm maybe but not before 10.00pm certainly.

applepieinthesky · 27/05/2012 21:37

8.30 is too early but as they have just moved in it may be a one-off. If it became a regular thing I would bring it up.

DP mowed the lawn yesterday but we waited until 10am as we thought it was too early before that.

I would say 9 - 9.30 is reasonable

upahill · 27/05/2012 21:40

Can't believe the number of people thinking that the neighbours are being UR!!

I am lazy in the mornings but this really wouldn't be an issue to me.
I heard the young children in the house nearby playing out at 7.30am this morning when I was half asleep after a night out last night.
I just thought it was nice that it was sunny and went back to sleep.

upahill · 27/05/2012 21:43

I have days off in the week so I never really get a chance to lie in as I live on a main road with houses at the back and side of me, all with young kids.

Weekends I'm often working and on weekdays traffic starts going past from 6.30am.
Quiet until 8.30 would be a luxury!!

It doesn't bother me though - I just put my head under the quilt and go back to sleep as a rule!!

applepieinthesky · 27/05/2012 21:44

I can't believe you don't think it's unreasonable upahill. You may choose to wake up early but what gives you the right to force someone else to if for whatever reason they don't want to?
