Sorry MIL one again but this really winds me up. She is forevever telling dd that she will be tall like her daddy and grandad. Dad is 5ft 10 and grandad about the same size. Fair enough I am short even for a lady but all the men in my family were over 6ft. Now thats tall.

Well 5'10 would be tall for your DD but I think it's probably about average height for a man.

whitby80 · 25/05/2012 09:35

Btw I am grateful that she is in my dc's life. In fact she and fil are the only grandparents my dc have now.

5'10 IS Average height so no.

6ft isn't really that tall for a bloke.

bogwobbit · 25/05/2012 09:36

Maybe 5'10" was tall when you MIL was younger. It's pretty much average now tho

teaaddict2012 · 25/05/2012 09:37

My dad's 6'3 my DP is 6'5 I am 5'9 which is considered tall for a woman but not mammoth ,

every generation gets taller remember.

whitby80 · 25/05/2012 09:37

I think what she is trying to say is that you clearly are going to get your height genes from my side of the family. Incidently dd is one of the smallest in her class so she not even that tall.

YouOldSlag · 25/05/2012 09:37

Well it's tall to me, I'm 5ft2. (and female BTW Smile)

squeakytoy · 25/05/2012 09:37

I am only 5ft1, so anyone over 5ft6 seems tall to me Grin

I am not sure why a comment like this would wind you up though anyway...

susiedaisy · 25/05/2012 09:39

She means tall like them not short like you, that's how I would interpret it, mils don't you just love um, but I can see what she means I am a short arse and everyone else in my family is tall compared to me, my mother is five foot six not tall in itself but tall compared to me!!

whitby80 · 25/05/2012 09:39

Well not really sure how tall brother is but his shoe size is an 11 so I think that makes him tall. I thinks dad's feet were a 10. Dh's are an 8.

Older relatives are never tactful about women being tall/big I've noticed.

once an elderly relative to me 'a man will look at you and say I want strong sons!'
I was aghast at such a horrible comment and frankly felt like throwing something.
I don't think it occurs that kind of rudeness past a certain age.

bumbleymummy · 25/05/2012 09:41

Ok, I can kind of see why it is annoying from the 'my side' point of view when you have much taller people on your side.

PuffPants · 25/05/2012 09:42

5'10 is not tall for a man, to me it would be bordering on the short side. I tend to think of 6ft as being average and anything over that being tall. He would have to be over 6'2 I reckon for me to actually refer to him as being tall.

squeakytoy · 25/05/2012 09:42

why do people assume the MIL is elderly Grin, I have been a (step)MIL since I was 39...

Westcountrylovescheese · 25/05/2012 09:42

Ha ha... Well I speak from knowledge here... I have a 'penchant' for tall men. They make me wobbly at the knees. I have never had a boyfriend under 6 foot 3. In fact DH at 6 foot 4 is short in my books.

So no, 5'10 is no where near tall.

whitby80 · 25/05/2012 09:43

Exactly susie. Maybe I am just ultra sensitive and hormonal. She isn't too bad as MIL's go but every so often she managed to come out with something which I feel is putting me in my place.
Eg I was commenting on a new photo collage she had saying how nice it was. She said "I thought it would be nice to have a frame with all my family and the other 2 hangers on". Meaning me and SIL's husband.

I'd go for whenever she says that reply with "yes dd is tall like my dad/brother...". If you want to rub it in then you could add "he was X" taller than dh".

My mil used to compare everything dd1 did with a member of her family. Her eyes were blue like her mothers (so are all my family) she talked like dh (um... our family talked too-this was when she was on single words) and was fat like bil (actually no-he was nearly 30lb at a year and she was about 2/3rds that)...

LST · 25/05/2012 09:46

Well I'm 6ft 1'

My dad is 6ft 7'

whitby80 · 25/05/2012 09:51

O yes when dd was born she managed to produce a photo of dh as a baby to show how alike they are and tbf she did look alot like him. However, now she is a real mini me.

Depends where you are in the world. There are big regional differences in average height.

GobblersKnob · 25/05/2012 09:55

I am 5'10" so men of the same height seem a bit short arsed to me.

Next time just smile and say, 'Yes she is tall isn't she, but then it does run in my family'.

DeathMetalMum · 25/05/2012 09:57

I am the same as you df is 5'11 and to me he doesnt seem tall as my dad and brother/uncles/aunt are all 6'+. However when we are out sometimes in the pub with a group of friends df can often be the tallest out of everyone. I get my height genes from my mums side of the family most of which are less than 5' Envy

AdventuresWithVoles · 25/05/2012 09:58

Think you need to grow a thicker skin, OP.

MacaroniPie · 25/05/2012 09:59

Above 6'2 is what I would call 'tall' for a man

whitby80 · 25/05/2012 10:02

Probably do adventures.
