Sorry MIL one again but this really winds me up. She is forevever telling dd that she will be tall like her daddy and grandad. Dad is 5ft 10 and grandad about the same size. Fair enough I am short even for a lady but all the men in my family were over 6ft. Now thats tall.

It would count as tall in Scotland, my Granny used to go on about my dad being tall and he is about 5'7"! Mind you she was only about 4'11".

kirsty75005 · 25/05/2012 10:06

5'10" is average now but it probably was tall whan your MIL was young.
Haven't average heights gone up about 2 inches over the last fifty years or so ?

IAmBooybilee · 25/05/2012 10:07

firstly why the fuck would you even give this a moment's thought? very Confused

secondly, is it possible she means that dd is going to be tall like her dad as opposed to small like a child? as in be adult tall not meaning that 5'10" is tall.?

but again, you're giving this way too much thought. your very obvious feelings about your MIL will filter through to your DD.

OldGreyWiffleTest · 25/05/2012 10:11

5'10" is only 2" short of 6' !

wigglybeezer · 25/05/2012 10:12

Just looked it up on Wikipedia ,5'10" is average for men in England. Scotsmen are half an inch smaller! Quite chuffed that I am quite a bit taller than average.

whitby80 · 25/05/2012 10:13

Why would my feelings re MIL filter through to dd? I didn't say anything to her re the comment. (MIL or dd). I am always pleasant and say just the right things.
Yes, I probably am overthinking a throway comment but this is my 1st pregnancy without my mum so I am feeling a bit fragile.

skrullandcrossbones · 25/05/2012 10:15

It's not necessarily about you. I tell my DS's they'll be tall like Daddy one day -he's 5'10" I just mean they'll be grown-ups. I'm not comparing DH and me (we are both average height for our gender, I guess.)

whitby80 · 25/05/2012 10:22

Maybe skrull but why not say daddy and mummy than. Not daddy and grandad.

startail · 25/05/2012 10:22

My 6ft born in 1900 grandfather was tall for his generation. My 6ft DH is pretty average for his.

IAmBooybilee · 25/05/2012 10:24

they always filter through. your dd will learn through your body language and mannerisms how you really feel about her grandmother. i'm sorry you are feeling a bit alone right now (i'm assuming your own mother has died recently?) and i can see why you would be a bit over sensitive to comments from your MIL, but it really isn't worth bothering yourself over. so what if she likes to big up her own side of the family, you and dh know that there are tall people on your side, and really, does it matter how tall your dd will be? is that one of the important things in life? i dont think it is and i think your givig yourself things to get annoyed over that you could do without. i dont like throwing cliches about but really dont sweat the small stuff. your dd wont give a shite who she gets her tall genes from and as she gets older she will see for herself that granny likes to blow her own (family's) trumpet a bit too loudly. i really do mean this in the nicest way, you're not benefitting either yourself or dd by getting wound up about height/weight appearance comments from a point scoring granny. your dd growing up isn't a competition about who contributed the most genes. Smile

PorkyandBess · 25/05/2012 10:34

My dh is 5.10 and is thought of as a short arse!

Psychopsilocybin · 25/05/2012 10:40

5'10 isn't very tall. I'm that height, DP is 5'11 and complains about being short. Mind you, all of his friends are over 6'4 so he naturally would feel short compared to those giants! Poor DP :o

Katiepoes · 25/05/2012 11:10

I'm 5'10. Husband is 6'7, BIL is 6'10, my own bothers are all 6'4. Husband and BIL are Dutch - in this country 5'10 is a pixie.

ABatInBunkFive · 25/05/2012 11:15

I'm Scottish and still say it isn't tall, i'm nearly that height myself and last time i checked i was female and not freakishly tall for it. Wink So a guy that size is practically a midget. Wink

BigBoobiedBertha · 25/05/2012 11:20

Average male height is apparently 5ft 8" which seems short to me - that is for our generation, I think it has gone up an inch since then. DH is 5"9" and the tallest in his family and even so nobody thinks he is tall. He is OK but he does have to look up to a lot of other men.

OP, Your MIL reminds me of my BIL(DH's brother so short) who is convinced his 14 yr old DS is going to be very tall. He is so very average though. My DS is 2.5 yrs younger than his DS and nearly as big. My family is a lot taller so not surprising. BIL's DS has only just got to be as tall as his short arse dad and in the middle of the big growth spurt they have at that age so he is going to have go some be the 6fter his dad reckons he is going to be. Not sure, like the OP, why it bothers me so much as there isn't much we can do about it. Smile

CocoPopsAddict · 25/05/2012 11:21

I think she means that she might grow as tall as her dad and grandad, and that would make her tall, for a woman.

It's average for a man.

My DH is 5'9 and people call him tall, which is really odd, but I think it's because he's so slim that he looks tall in comparison to his width, haha.

Ormiriathomimus · 25/05/2012 11:23

No it isn't. I'm 5'11", DH is 6'1 - I don't even think that is tall. My dad was 6.3", my brother is 6'5" - now that is tall!

Salmotrutta · 25/05/2012 11:26

It's not tall - it's the average for UK males.

All the men in my side of the family are 6'3" - 6'4". DS inherited this trait but then DH is 6' too and I'm about 5'10".
DH is the tallest on his side though - the rest are average.

I like tall men because I'm tall - when I was a teenager I was unusually tall for the era but I'm seeing more and more girls at school now who are approaching 6'.

Heleninahandcart · 25/05/2012 11:34

Take her to the Netherlands. Average is 6ft 1in apparently.

limitedperiodonly · 25/05/2012 11:42

I'm 5ft 4in.

Men over 5ft 10in have never appealed. It's natural selection in action because the only places I used to manhunt in had music so loud I couldn't have conversations with anyone above that height. And my neck hurt looking up at them.

In the event of a catastrophic global event our kind will rule the world because big people need more food to survive.

quoteunquote · 25/05/2012 11:42

you can work out your child's potential hight,

you add mother's hight to father's hight ,divide by two, and add 5cm for female, or 7cm for male,

the three things that effect the ability to reach potential hight are diet, sleep, and temperature(if a child uses energy keeping warm, that energy doesn't go into growth)

I'm 5 foot 10 and my husband is 6 foot 10,

my 10 year old DS is in size 8 shoes, DD age 8, size 5, we pay VAT on shoes for a child who isn't yet in secondary school.

DeWe · 25/05/2012 11:44

IamB I don't see why you're adamant that OP doesn't like her mil. She's said one thing that is irritating her. She hasn't said anything that implies she doesn't like her.

I love my dm very much but she has a very irritating way of clearing her throat. Usually just after everyone else has gone quiet. It really rubs me up the wrong way, but I don't think anyone else would ever know at all.

MousyMouse · 25/05/2012 11:50

6ft and above is tall, anything from 5.5 to that is just avarage...

MousyMouse · 25/05/2012 11:52

I have a cousin who is 7ft. THAT is tall...

BalloonSlayer · 25/05/2012 11:58

quote's method is a standard one but I know lots of people who do not conform to it - 2 childhood friends, boy 6'5, girl 6' (as adults!) with parents who were both about 5'8

There are other calculators online like this one which take into account the child's current age, height and weight (if children are overweight they can tend to be taller than their peers as children but not when they are adults)
