to send my son to school?

Ds (6) was sick in the night at about 2am. He had been fine all day, woke up at 1.30 said he felt sick and then was sick half an hour later. He had a drink and went back to bed.

I fully expected him to be ill when we got up today and was expecting to keep him home. When he woke up he was fine. No sign of illness (didn't feel sick, normal temp etc) and was hungry. Ate a normal breakfast washed dressed and played etc as normal.

So I have sent him to school as he doesn't seem unwell. If it was a stomach bug he would have been sick more than once surely and or have diarrhea and feel ill? He had a busy evening yesterday- swimming, various medical appts(not due to illness) and homework.

So aibu? Should I have kept him home anyway?

Are you happy to go in and clear up if he's sick in school?

RandomNumbers · 22/05/2012 08:53

Yes of course you should have kept him home
48 hour exclusion from last episode of d and or v is usual in uk per HPA guidelines

morecoffeemorecoffee · 22/05/2012 08:53

Er if I thought he would be sick at school I wouldn't have sent him?!

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 22/05/2012 08:53

I would have thought twice about sending him and I would have told the school to keep an eye on him.

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 22/05/2012 08:54

coffee but you're doubting you choice now!

RandomNumbers · 22/05/2012 08:54

What about staff and fellow pupils

Sick bugs are vile

sugarice · 22/05/2012 08:54

I would have kept him off.Do you have to go to work?

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 22/05/2012 08:55

Yes, you are being unreasonable to have sent him to school, and very selfish.

What dies the fact that he had a busy evening have to do with anything?

He didn't wake up sick in the night for no reason. I might have said YANBU if he had coughed himself sick, or if he had clearly eaten too much chocolate, but that's not what happend.

People like you do my head in with your self centeredness.

You know there's a 48 hour exclusion period for sickness don't you?

kat1885 · 22/05/2012 08:57

I think you are being unreasonable, its things like this which cause epidemics of bugs, some people just don't get affected as bad as others and are only sick once, others could get the same thing and be ill for a week. I'm dreading September and ds1 starting school as I have severe anxiety issues around illness.

lisad123 · 22/05/2012 09:01

I think you are very unreasonable Angry
There are rules about staying off for 24-48 hours for good reason!
I'm glad you don't have to deal with I'm but what about all those poor children he is going to pass his sick bug to? Have you thought about them and their families? No so purely for selfish reasons you sent him.

Think about those who might have family members who can't handle another virus like cupofteas Bea, or misdee's dh or Expats or even my dh. A little virus to you and your ds can have serious difficulties for others! Angry

I should add this happened before about a year ago- unexplained one off vomiting in the middle of the night. It happened on one off occasions a few months apart. Saw gp as wondered what could cause it. Gp said it could be due to some of the meds he's on or could be night terrors (as he gets these sometimes). They could not find any sign of illness (I took a sample in on one occasion).

That hardly means you can be sure he hasn't got a bug this time! Hmm

clam · 22/05/2012 09:03

"Er if I thought he would be sick at school I wouldn't have sent him?!"

And did you think he'd be sick in the night? No, it took you by surprise. But he was, and there is therefore a higher than average chance he'll be sick again. If I had a pound for every child I've seen be sick at school who said, "Oh, I was sick this morning/last night but Mummy said I'd be OK to come to school."
So, we'll clear that up then, shall we? Thanks, Mum. And I'm sure the mums of all the kids who've picked up the bug will be grateful too. Not to mention the staff.

RandomNumbers · 22/05/2012 09:04

Ok

Google boerhaave syndrome then think

A person very close to me died because of someone like you

Hth

YourFanjoIsNotAHandbag · 22/05/2012 09:04

Ok but you don't actually know why he was sick, he could have a virus that will then be passed into to all the other children.

You must know there's an exclusion policy and why it is in place.
Would have been so much hassle just to keep him at home for one day, even though he "seems" well?

It seems pretty selfish tbh

BlackAffronted · 22/05/2012 09:04

No! 48 hours at least! It angers me when parents send their kids back too early, it usually means my DS will get it.

YABVVVVU!

Kayano · 22/05/2012 09:05

Drip drip drip already? Wow

ripsishere · 22/05/2012 09:05

I think you are having an unecessarily hard time here OP. I probably would have kept my DD off, but still.
Can you phone the school and go and collect him?

scentednappyhag · 22/05/2012 09:05

YABU. I used to work with a woman who always came in, even with tummy bugs. It's so selfish, you never know what underlying problems people have.

morecoffeemorecoffee · 22/05/2012 09:06

The school are aware if his illnesses. Last time we checked with the school before sending him in. They said it was fine as he had seen gp and were aware of the problems he experiences.

Dh has taken him and has checked with school. They said he can come in and will keep an eye on him.

cocoachannel · 22/05/2012 09:07

I should add...

Hmm all the info in the OP. Not that I think it makes a difference YABU.

TallTreesJo · 22/05/2012 09:08

How is he now, OP?

Kayano · 22/05/2012 09:08

Why the hell did you start this thread? HmmConfused
