to send my son to school?

Ds (6) was sick in the night at about 2am. He had been fine all day, woke up at 1.30 said he felt sick and then was sick half an hour later. He had a drink and went back to bed.

I fully expected him to be ill when we got up today and was expecting to keep him home. When he woke up he was fine. No sign of illness (didn't feel sick, normal temp etc) and was hungry. Ate a normal breakfast washed dressed and played etc as normal.

So I have sent him to school as he doesn't seem unwell. If it was a stomach bug he would have been sick more than once surely and or have diarrhea and feel ill? He had a busy evening yesterday- swimming, various medical appts(not due to illness) and homework.

So aibu? Should I have kept him home anyway?

I am usually one of the first to rant like a loon if anyone suggests taking a sick child anywhere. It really is one of my pet subjects.

But in this case I am not so sure. Sometimes people throw up. They are not ill. They just throw up.

I have periods of nausea and I am not ill. Its probably hormones or something.

OH will sometimes be sick because he has a slighty dodgy stomach generally.

When DD was ill I would often feel fecking horrible. It was because I wasnt eating properly and would then grab some junk food. I would often be given on of those motilium tablets by the doctors. It sort of moves your digestion along (scientific) and I would feel better really quickly.

NEVER send an ill child into school. One that has thrown up once and has no other symptoms isnt really ill though.

But I do understand those who are a bit passionate about this subject because I am too.

At my sons school (unless the child has a high temp and/or looks ill)... when they are sick IN school they keep them there and do not even contact the parents.

OP in your circumstances I would have sent my son to school.

Our London boroughs guidance:

Vomiting and diarrhoea
If you think your child has
meningitis, get help from your
doctor or a hospital at once.
If vomiting occurs, your child
should stay at home until he or
she can keep food down. A child
with diarrhoea should also be
kept at home.
Consult your doctor if you child
does not improve as you expect

OP your son could hold his food down - No?

Thank you to those who have understood me!

I have finished explaining myself about drip feed.

Ds completed his school work and played out because he was not/is not ill.

Just to clarify my school does have a 48hr policy re d&v, but they do understand that sometimes children are just sick! We have not had an out break of any kind of sickness/ diarrhea bug in all the time Ds has attended. School has a very good attendance record and it is seen as a very good school.

Gp and school have both said he should go in tomorrow. Gp has said i can bring him in every time this happens so they can check him out so.there is no issue visiting gp! If I was in any way doubtful of whether he was ill from a bug I would not take him to gp and would keep him home!

I was just hoping to get opinions on both sides really. Ie those who would always keep dc home and those who would take each situation on its own merit.

Thanks for everyone's feed back. :)
