to not want my child to say 'fart'?

or am I a prude?

I was never allowed to use this word as a child and used 'trump' instead.

I still don't like the word and would prefer my DH not to say it around my little dd as I don't want her to pick it up. DH thinks I'm silly.

Silly I'm afraid. Is it really worth making a big issue about a word? It's hardly a 'turn the air blue' kind of a thing is it?

thisisyesterday · 21/05/2012 18:08

i agree with your dh

i cannot stand trump, or pump. they both sound ridiculous.

5inthebed · 21/05/2012 18:09

YANBU. I am the same.

However, Ds1 is now 9 and says fart due to his peers saying it. Which as a result, DS3, 3, now says fart as well.

I hate it, but we did last 9 years before Ds1 said it.

Olympia2012 · 21/05/2012 18:09

Ha! She will pick it up elsewhere anyway! V soon

How old is she?

SoupDragon · 21/05/2012 18:10

You are being silly. It is what it is.

Why do you need to say fart ot thump?

Farting or thrumping is just something everyone does. You dont really need to discuss it or anounce to the world I need a fart or i have just farted and if one does slip out in company a simple excuse me will do.

UnChartered · 21/05/2012 18:11

aw, have you only got the 2 words for fart then?

not got to 'airbiscuit' 'botty burp' 'arse trumpet' 'flaring up a warning shot' 'stinky noise' 'pop' 'poop alarm' yet?

believe me, by the time your DD is big enough to float her own at will you'll eb glad of the word 'fart'

HeadfirstForHalos · 21/05/2012 18:11

YABU, it's just a word. Trump and pump are silly!

valiumredhead · 21/05/2012 18:12

Trump is worse imo!

We call it windy bottom, but my DD(5) has picked up from school its called 'fort'.

I'm not correcting her as its quite sweet, but when she works it out properly I won't stop her using the word fart.

HeadfirstForHalos · 21/05/2012 18:13

Of course you have to use the words! How can my children blame their dad/each other/the cat/the dog when one of them farts Grin

Olympia2012 · 21/05/2012 18:14

What word do you use then?

Victoria3012 · 21/05/2012 18:15

YANBU I hate the word fart and my children call it 'popped' Smile. I just hate the word fart xx

QueenEdith · 21/05/2012 18:15

DH can think you are silly, that's not the point. When there are two conflicting standards in a household, you need to get it sorted out, ideally by reaching a negotiated settlement. In the meantime, and generally as a default, it's better to go for the option generally considered less offensive especially whilst the children are small. They'll all learn the words in the playground soon enough, and also learning there are different registers of what language is appropriate where is a useful lesson in itself.

I'm sure my DM got through the entire child-rearing years without ever referring to flatulence at all Smile

cantspel · 21/05/2012 18:15

We dont tend to discuss other peoples farts so it has never been an issue

clicketyclick66 · 21/05/2012 18:16

My children called them "barbs" and I never corrected them. Gave a whole new meaning to "Barbie Doll" and "Barbie Girl" though.....

TidyDancer · 21/05/2012 18:16

Yes, I think YABU. It's just a word, and you are being a bit silly.

CaptainHetty · 21/05/2012 18:17

Your children would get in trouble for saying the word 'fart'?

Christ on a bike.

Splinters · 21/05/2012 18:18

Yabvu to want anybody to say 'trump', and unless you can come up with a better alternative should save your disapproval for people who think it's ok to actually fart all over the place.

lazylula · 21/05/2012 18:22

It is not a word I like either so yanbu. Ds1 (6) has come home from school using it and has been told not to, in the same way a the words shut up and stupid are words we do not use. Ds2 (3) hasn't quite got that we do not use shut up and stupid yet, but I am working on it!

We refer to having done a 'fartybum'. My attempt to soften it a bit.

Don't like trump or any of the others.

giveitago · 21/05/2012 18:23

OP - that's nothing - just this morning my ds decided to tell our guests (from overseas) that mummy is a major farter - thank goodness they didn't understand english.

But it's a word for a bodily function at the end of the day. It's not that bad at all.
