to not want my child to say 'fart'?

or am I a prude?

I was never allowed to use this word as a child and used 'trump' instead.

I still don't like the word and would prefer my DH not to say it around my little dd as I don't want her to pick it up. DH thinks I'm silly.

I loathe the word and simply cannot say it. The other 4-letter F word I have no trouble with whatsoever, but not this one :) My children use the word and whilst it makes me cringe I'd never stop them saying it as it's not rude, I just have an irrational dislike of it. My favourite euphemism is DD's - she calls it backfiring :)

EssentialFattyAcid · 23/05/2012 19:36

my mother used the term "popping off" Grin
she is disgusted by the lack of restraint in my household
she claims never to have farted in the presence of my father - and claims that one should "absorb"

My mother is not someone whose example should usually be followed Grin

sadsac · 23/05/2012 20:09

Parp is so much nicer. But unfortunately they pick up the f word from others at school. I wish my dh would learn to absorb!

seeker · 23/05/2012 20:13

What I don't understand ISA why people talk about farting all the time. The only person in our family who regularly talks about farting is my 11 year old ds. Why do frown ups who don't have small children talki about it at all?

But when I do talk about it, I say fart.

AllYoursBabooshka · 23/05/2012 21:01

Seeker, As much as I try to be grown up about the subject I just can't... DP is the same. It makes us laugh!

I know it's horribly silly but what's wrong with a little silliness every now and again?

Ahem...

Shelpit · 23/05/2012 21:37

The word Fart was used in Chaucers time, so has been around for a very long time. However, as a child I was only allowed to say ' blow-off' to excuse a natural function. It took quite a long time until I felt comfortable using the word fart.

Do not try and repress your child by imposing coy words for a fart. It is after all, only a word.

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 23/05/2012 22:20

Whoever suggested the use of the term "Gary" for a fart...thank you...I now feel we have a suitable word for a nasty bodily function. Grin my 7 year old loves it and has been saying "Have you Garied? and "Who did a Gary?" all day.

Gymbob · 23/05/2012 22:32

Yup, it's trump in our house. Fart sounds so course and not the kind of word I want my sweet daughters's saying Grin. I've come a long way though as when I as a kid, I couldn't fart, neither could my parents, and to say the word would have been just terrible.

I know they both use the f word with friends though (fart that is, but prob the other one too!)

TheSmallClanger · 23/05/2012 22:32

Fair enough not to want to discuss it endlessly, but "fart" is a perfectly normal word, and everyone learns it at school from the other kids.
Some euphemisms are far too twee - for some reason, hearing a 7yo boy going on about "pop pops" made me feel a bit ill.

rainydaysarebad · 23/05/2012 22:37

I would just like to emphasise what essentialfattyacid said. Never hold in your farts/trumps/gufts. I did this when I got married to dh on our honey moon. Omg I will never forget the pain of trapped wind circling around like a hurricane in my stomach. As shrek says "better out than in".

whothefuckputmeincharge · 23/05/2012 22:49

Love Mumsnet for addressing the most important subjects Grin

Love the word fart and boff myself but ....

We make our DSs use the Norwegian for fart, prumpa, in front of us. It seemed like a good way for teaching them about some words you use with your friends and some you use with your family.

Rollmops · 23/05/2012 22:53

Why do you feel the need to discuss the said fart? If one lets one slip in polite company, one should simply ignore the fact, as will everyone else present.

EmmaCate · 23/05/2012 23:06

YANBU to want it but YABU to expect it to happen because you want it.

I'm being a right pedant tonight.

Trump is a bit creepy; the fart equivalent of pussy for vag, which I abhor.

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 23/05/2012 23:22

whothefuck PRUMPA! Love it!

Rollmops you're named after a herring....you can't judge.

ComposHat · 24/05/2012 03:26

Love the word fart and boff myself but ....

I thought to boff someone is to shag I don't like cockneys, but do like the rhyming slang phrase D'oyle Carte for fart.

whothefuckputthebuntingup · 25/05/2012 22:47

Really? Boff. To shag? Love it even more now Grin

GeorgeEliot · 25/05/2012 22:55

YABU and a prude.

There is absolutely nothing offensive about the word.
