to not want my child to say 'fart'?

or am I a prude?

I was never allowed to use this word as a child and used 'trump' instead.

I still don't like the word and would prefer my DH not to say it around my little dd as I don't want her to pick it up. DH thinks I'm silly.

:o I LOVE the use of 'gary' for 'fart' :o

I really don't understand why anyone wouldn't use the word fart though!

Twinkleinmyeye · 21/05/2012 19:26

I wouldn't really like to hear DS (2.6) saying it. I think it's just not a nice sounding word. Like dollop, which also sounds ugly (but we do use it cos I'm not that insane, not meaning farts but for things like "dollop of mayo").

Farts are fluffs in our house. :o

SilentBoob · 21/05/2012 19:29

Am a bit baffled by people taking exception to the word fart. Seems a bit like disliking the word 'table' or 'leg' and banning your children from saying it.

My mum used to talk about a 'rude noise' or a 'rude smell'.

SilentBoob · 21/05/2012 19:31

I've just remembered my friend being utterly appalled when I used the word 'bum' in front of her 2 yr old.

hazeyjane · 21/05/2012 19:32

Dd2 not only announces, 'excuse me, I have done a fart'

she also likes to describe what it smells of eg

'it smells of socks and jam'

or

'cheese and chimpanzees'

eatyourveg · 21/05/2012 19:36

Always called bottom burps here -

supernannyisace · 21/05/2012 19:38

I hate the word. Especially with our broad accent - it just sounds really common.

I also hate any one actually breaking wind. I rarely do ( truly), DH can't, and the DSs get told off - as it is really bad manners to share the smell of the inside of your rectum with everyone else.

yeah - I am a bit up my own I guess.... Grin

My mum hates the word, so it was never used in our house (and she never farts, either, not that I've ever heard). They would be referred to as 'bad smells' if at all.

DH's family call them parps, but for DD I came up with 'bottom squeak' which I thought was quite appropriate for a baby.

Some of you don't ever or can't fart? Lucky people!

supernannyisace · 21/05/2012 19:55

dH doesn't as he has a stoma.... Not that nice for him really - but hey - no farting in bed... ;)

3littlebadgers · 21/05/2012 19:55

Smile at 'bottom squeeks'

bobbledunk · 21/05/2012 19:55

Very weird and silly, fart is a perfectly good wordGrin

3littlebadgers · 21/05/2012 19:56

squeaks that is sorry typing with a kitten

HermanMumster · 21/05/2012 19:56

toot

LeoTheLateBloomer · 21/05/2012 19:57

Noisy botties in this house. Started by DD who's 2 and I love it so I'm hoping it will last Smile

oopsi · 21/05/2012 19:58

YANBU I hate the word fart.Trump sounds a lot less rude

StrawberrytallCAKE · 21/05/2012 20:02

yanbu at all, it is horribly common imo. I would say 'pop' is the correct description. Grin

PorkyandBess · 21/05/2012 20:03

Fart is not a rude word!

Trump or pump are embarrassingly cringey.

I don't think it's necessary to try and use a naice word instead, as fart is not exactly offensive..

FrothyOM · 21/05/2012 20:05

My great gran was like this, she insisted you could only refer to it as passing wind. I thought this was an old fashioned tendency I didn't know people still felt like this!

Do you fart haters also keep your toilet roll under a dolls skirt as well?

And do the non-farters also produce rose scented bowel movements?

ScrambledSmegs · 21/05/2012 20:07

I do occasionally, but they're relatively rare compared with the hideous burps I do - which only happens when I'm alone. I won't do them in company despite the relief it affords me. I have to go into another room Blush

ScrambledSmegs · 21/05/2012 20:09

I can't rather than won't fart by the way - I have no idea why my body is this way, it's strange.
