to not want my child to say 'fart'?

or am I a prude?

I was never allowed to use this word as a child and used 'trump' instead.

I still don't like the word and would prefer my DH not to say it around my little dd as I don't want her to pick it up. DH thinks I'm silly.

I don't like fart, but the alternatives are worse, particularly pump, puts me in mind of Johnny Fartpants from Viz. I do think you need to refer to it occasionally, if only to teach your DCs at they should try not to do it in ont of people and if they do that they need to say excuse me. I was brought up to say rude smell, I got crucified for it at school, so I'm not going down the twee euphemism route.

cantspel · 21/05/2012 18:25

If it is good enough for Chaucer than it is good enough for everyone

heronsfly · 21/05/2012 18:25

YANBU, I hate it and none of my 6dcs say it in my hearing,I expect the younger ones say it when away from me, but the older ones dont use it at all.

peggyblackett · 21/05/2012 18:26

What's actually wrong with the word fart? Am I missing something?

LentillyFart · 21/05/2012 18:26

Bugger me bandy! Adult children getting into trouble for using the word 'fart'?

Some people really really need to lighten the fuck up!

Yucketyyuck · 21/05/2012 18:26

I personally can't stand trump, or popped or the worst IMO pumped... Would rather have Gary than any of those. My friends adorable DD says frumpton and we have sort of adopted that. My DM says "made wind" Grin

TequilaMockinBird · 21/05/2012 18:27

YANBU, I hate it aswell.

I've never allowed DD to say it either, I just think it sounds awful

Bumdrop · 21/05/2012 18:28

We say doing a raspberry around dd,
I say cleansing my colon when she is not in earshot:)

Dawndonna · 21/05/2012 18:28

DS told his reception teacher that: "Daddy calls Mummy The Methane Monster"

Fart is a normal word. I hate trump and all the other silly twee words.

RobinScherbatsky · 21/05/2012 18:28

My Mum used to do do really long squeaky multi-tonal farts. My Dad would say "Mummy's sending a fax again".

Yucketyyuck · 21/05/2012 18:28

Gary? Fart obviously! Maybe they will now be known as Garys in my house now

seeker · 21/05/2012 18:28

Myeline has always been that if you have to call it something, then fart is fine- but as with all things, consider the company you're in.

"Appropriateness" is a concept I tried to introduce early.

"pump" is beyond awful.

GnocchiNineDoors · 21/05/2012 18:29

I grew up not being allowed to use it, and I don't. There are lots of other words to use. YANBU to want your DC to use other words.

Trump, Toot, Pump, all better on the ear and imo more appropriate for a child to use.

seeker · 21/05/2012 18:30

But I am loving "rude smell" I will introduce that to my ds at once!

bigTillyMint · 21/05/2012 18:30

I love the word trump - makes me larf me pants off everytime I hear a Northern Nipper say itGrin

DS went through a phase of saying eggywahwah - that's quite a good one!

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 21/05/2012 18:30

I don't let mine say it....DH is not English though and can't see the problem....they know not to say it when I am there and they know not to say it in public either. Ugly word.

SoupDragon · 21/05/2012 18:30

I always suspect that the people who insist on words like Trump are the same ones who refer to sex as Baby Dancing.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/05/2012 18:31

My Dneice has been brought up to say pump, it is awful, that would be the one term for it that I would actively say the DCs shouldn't use.

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 21/05/2012 18:31

Tilly thats even worse than fart!

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 21/05/2012 18:32

Soup no....I have no problem with words like cunt and fuck...it's fart I hate! Obv I wouldn''t want my DC to say any of them!

HeadfirstForHalos · 21/05/2012 18:32

Trump, toot and pump make me cringe, they are awful.

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 21/05/2012 18:33

yuckety I like frumpton!

Bumdrop · 21/05/2012 18:34

I think I know why I don't find the word pump very savoury
It's because to me, it implies really pushing it out, and that is just wrong !

If it weren't for mn I could have gone a lifetime not knowing the silent moral outrage over the word fart.

A fart is a fart in this house unless it is an 'sbd' (silent but deadly) in which case prior warning is not only welcomed but encouraged.
