to not want my child to say 'fart'?

or am I a prude?

I was never allowed to use this word as a child and used 'trump' instead.

I still don't like the word and would prefer my DH not to say it around my little dd as I don't want her to pick it up. DH thinks I'm silly.

I have just read the whole thread and laughed so loudly that the DC and DH came running.

I never knew there were so many Hyacinth Bouquets on MN.

Great thread

GnocchiNineDoors · 21/05/2012 18:39

I like 'left cheek sneak'

JeanetteKrankie · 21/05/2012 18:39

Upon hearing an audible fart my old nan always used to say 'Who's let Tommy out of prison?' Grin

JeanetteKrankie · 21/05/2012 18:41

We also used to call a fart a 'fuffle' as that's what it sounded like coming out Smile

Pannacotta · 21/05/2012 18:42

Think yourself lucky, my DSs say "guff" which is much worse than fart...

charitygirl · 21/05/2012 18:44

Hmm, I think having a 'naice' word for 'fart'' is a bit naff, I'm afraid.

thegreylady · 21/05/2012 18:45

Heck I must be one of the biggest language prudes on MN but even I have no objection to fart as a word used in context. I have 9 dgc aged between 3 and 14 and would have no objection at all to hearing them use it.

vixsatis · 21/05/2012 18:47

Glorious, direct, onomatopoeic Anglo-Saxon. Can't stand the twee alternatives.

There are circumstances in which it may not be appropriate to discuss farting; but there's nothing wrong with the word itself

AThingInYourLife · 21/05/2012 18:48

"My Mum used to do do really long squeaky multi-tonal farts. My Dad would say "Mummy's sending a fax again"."

:o

Roaring at that! :o

I had no idea people got so worked up about normal words.

Is it a English thing?

No way would I let DH ban me from using the word "fart" in my own home.

AThingInYourLife · 21/05/2012 18:49

"Upon hearing an audible fart my old nan always used to say 'Who's let Tommy out of prison?' "

:o Love it :o

Lastofthepodpeople · 21/05/2012 18:49

I don't like it either although its probably the standard term and I know IABU. I tend to use 'made a smell' with DS.

My Auntie used to refer to 'making a rude noise!'

ScrambledSmegs · 21/05/2012 19:03

DD parps. DH farts. I do neither Hmm but that's cos my wind goes up not down Confused.

I don't see why the actual word matters. I use parp for DD because it seems cuter somehow weird mother alert but wouldn't mind if she decided to say fart.

BackforGood · 21/05/2012 19:04

YANBU. It comes under "words I don't want to hear in my house thank you very much" Yes, they hear it at school as they get older, but they also see and hear lots of other things I don't want repeating in my home. The 'they are going to hear it anyway' line doesn't really work, as a reason to allow things you don't agree with - whatever they are - IMO.

ScrambledSmegs · 21/05/2012 19:04

Oh, and my mother refers to 'breaking wind' but then she is very naice.

HandMadeTail · 21/05/2012 19:06

I hate the word "bum" I think it is coarse. I have no problem with "arse", though. Why is that?

ToadsPornFrogsPawn · 21/05/2012 19:11

Wait until your teenage boy says "pull my finger" - when you pull it, he'll let out a big fart and laugh uproariously Grin

BlackholesAndRevelations · 21/05/2012 19:13

Haha great thread!! Snorted out loud at Gary (even after realising it was a typo!)

I've tried to stop my partner saying fart in front of my kids but to no avail. Guess it doesn't matter really.... My alternative is "blowoff!" Blush

jaquelinehyde · 21/05/2012 19:15

I hate, hate, hate the word fart and don't use it and neither do the dc's.

I also don't use the word gash even though it is a perfectly normal descriptive word.

There are probably more and you lot will without a doubt have words that you just can't stand and so don't use. I don't see what the problem is to be honest.

sugarice · 21/05/2012 19:17

My mum would say "who's had the wind" if she whiffed something unpleasant when we were kids. When my OWN ds's were small we would say trump or botty burp which sounds ridiculous when they get older. I'm okay with fart now.

sugarice · 21/05/2012 19:18

*own.

Woofsaidtheladybird · 21/05/2012 19:18

I hate the word fart too. However, I do swear like a trooper and will merrily swear all day (not in front of DCs obv) I just don't like the word fart. It sounds like what a whiffy brown stench would sound like, which is obv what it is. Fortunately when DD3 'farts' (eerk) she giggles and says her bottom is saying hello Smile
