to fantasize about kicking the bumpers of every car parked half on the pavement

I walk to DD1's preschool along a busy, narrow B road. It seems that almost every time I go that way there is at least one car parked half on, half off the narrow pavement. Often such that I have to go onto the road with a pushchair and walking preschooler to get around the car. Or sometimes we just about squeeze past on the pavement, scraping along the wall

The road is narrow enough that other cars still have to go past in single file, so parking this way does not make it any easier for other motorists, just harder for pedestrians, especially ones with wide pushchairs or wheelchairs.

Every time I see a car like this, a brief thought goes through my mind of kicking the bumper as I go past, or knocking the wing mirror. I would never actually do it, but AIBU to fantasize?

YANBU, it's a pet hate of mine. Totally inconsiderate

AgentZigzag · 08/05/2012 13:00

I fantasize about scraping the pushchair down the sides of them Smile

YANBU

MuddlingMackem · 08/05/2012 13:00

YANBU.

Similar circumstances in our street and, back in my pushchair days, it used to really annoy me. Actually, it still annoys me but it just doesn't affect me as such.

Such selfishness from car owners really should result in some kind inconvenience for them, but alas they seem to get off scot-free. Sad

MousyMouse · 08/05/2012 13:03

yanbu
my mother once printed stickers (on computer adress labels, so paper + minimal damage) with something like inconsiderate idiot illegally parked in red ink. one sticker bang on the screen for maximum effect...
(didn't really work, though, judging by the many inconsiderate idiots...

FoofyShmooffer · 08/05/2012 13:07

Yanbu.

Especially on bin day when the pavement is entirely blocked by half parked cars and bins and you have take a fucking detour.

Squirrelz · 08/05/2012 13:07

YABU to complain on here instead of to your local MP and the police, if you actually want something done about it.

Debsbear · 08/05/2012 13:08

YANBU, try letting the air of their tyres! Grin

suburbandream · 08/05/2012 13:08

email your local council

SpiritOfTheSite · 08/05/2012 13:09

YANBU

I once had an argument with a family member about this, apparently traffic flow plus minimising risk of damage to car were more important than risking death to babies and children. I wish I was exaggerating but the roads some people do this on are lethal.

mistlethrush · 08/05/2012 13:09

I fantasised about fitting the buggy with Boudica inspired revolving blades at handle height - and possibly axle level too. Do you think there would be a market? Grin

SpiritOfTheSite · 08/05/2012 13:10

Haha!

Wondering what the council or MP would actually do as people do it all over the place!!

ipswichwitch · 08/05/2012 13:12

mistlethrush, you can put me down for one of those :)

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 08/05/2012 13:15

YABU to fantasize about it.

having said that I once kicked the rusty wheel arch of the fecker who used to park on the only safe place to cross on our street. I was a little tipsy. To this day I am grateful that I failed in my mission to knock a chunk out of the bodywork and that I wasn't caught; imagine the shame of being charged with criminal damage, as a 30-ish yo mother in a fairly responsible job Grin

mistlethrush · 08/05/2012 13:15

I think that they would have to probably be marketed as bag hooks or similar so that they weren't 'automatically' assumed to have been added to a buggy simply to key the cars parking on the pavements... but of course if they 'accidentally' were to scrape along because the car had parked on the pavement and therefore there was insufficient room to get past, you could hardly be blamed for having some hooks to help with shopping....

lola88 · 08/05/2012 13:16

i get my minor revenge on these people by flicking in thier wing mirrors so i don't accidently knock them off... i take joy in imagining them having to get out / lean over to put the mirror back out hehe

childish and silly but hey ho

Poulay · 08/05/2012 13:16

It would be a real shame if you were to accidentally scratch the shiny paintwork.

thebody · 08/05/2012 13:16

I do kick them sometimes or ram accidentally on purpose with buggy, then run

TattyDevine · 08/05/2012 13:18

True, it would be just DREADFUL if you were to accidentally scrape 2 panels with a rogue bit of sticky out pushchair. I guess that's the risk they take?

halcyondays · 08/05/2012 13:20

Yanbu, I do this too.

lunar1 · 08/05/2012 13:24

I hate it too, plus you can always count on their to be a pile of dog poo on the narrow gap they leave.

It used to make me more angry when i faced this when pushing my first husband's wheelchair. He only lived to 32 so we really didn't have time in our short life together to be careful passing these cars. I feel absolutely no shame in saying that a great many of them ended up scratched.

iwantbrie · 08/05/2012 13:39

Put me down for some of those mistlethrush
Between that and the selfish gits who park as close to the school gates as possible I come back from the school run in a real mood sometimes.

mistlethrush · 08/05/2012 13:43

Iwantbrie - I'm going to do a second set that are attachable to handbags for similarly non-damaging purposes Grin

AgentZigzag · 08/05/2012 13:46

I complained to the council about the cars outside DD1s school, exchanged a few emails, nice bloke said he and the 'friends' he had in the police (obviously a man of influence Grin) would visit the school and see what could be done.

Did absolutely fuck all.

I think they went round outside school run times to avoid awkward confrontations Grin

The three cars worst for it though (one who has all four wheels on the pavement) are all dads.

They get out and gossip together while everyone else has to walk round.

squeakytoy · 08/05/2012 13:48

The road is narrow enough that other cars still have to go past in single file, so parking this way does not make it any easier for other motorists

It probably makes it easier for emergency vehicles to get through though.

LaMeuf · 08/05/2012 13:57

YANBU. Who are these selfish fuckers? If the road is too narrow, find somewhere else to park.
