to fantasize about kicking the bumpers of every car parked half on the pavement

I walk to DD1's preschool along a busy, narrow B road. It seems that almost every time I go that way there is at least one car parked half on, half off the narrow pavement. Often such that I have to go onto the road with a pushchair and walking preschooler to get around the car. Or sometimes we just about squeeze past on the pavement, scraping along the wall

The road is narrow enough that other cars still have to go past in single file, so parking this way does not make it any easier for other motorists, just harder for pedestrians, especially ones with wide pushchairs or wheelchairs.

Every time I see a car like this, a brief thought goes through my mind of kicking the bumper as I go past, or knocking the wing mirror. I would never actually do it, but AIBU to fantasize?

YonWhaleFish People are reacting like this as it is so bloody dangerous.
Why should they have to walk into the road to get around a car that is parked inconsiderately?

YonWhaleFish · 08/05/2012 16:37

ramblinrose I don't think they should, if you read my posts properly.

whackamole · 08/05/2012 16:59

I vividly remember having to walk in the road with a double buggy as although there were clearly marked out parking spaces, most cars had parked on the road.

I guess the reason they had done it was because this was a busy road with buses that went up and down - but what made them think their car would be more likely to be hit than me and my children?

I remember standing there almost in tears really not knowing what to do - in the end I retraced my steps and walked a different way, I asked my dad to write to the council (as I wasn't resident there) but I don't recall if there was any response.

This was Vicarage Road in Watford BTW.

I believe it is as HecateTrivia said.

People who do this think they are not being selfish because they are not blocking the traffic flow. Especially when they are only going to be a minute and have their hazards on.

It's a big problem up here too, see Aberdeen Parking (Not safe for work - excessive use of anglo-saxon).

I fucking love that fucking website Abzs Grin

Fucking wish we fucking had one.

Don't get me started on advertising A boards on narrow pavements, which I used to take great pleasure in accidentally knocking over with the double buggy.

Do you leave enough room for a double buggy to go through, Grun?

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 08/05/2012 18:40

YANBU, I often fantasise about committing acts of vandalism on cars that park over a huge chunk of pavement. It's really selfish and inconsiderate behaviour.

Also I hate people who suddenly swoop up on to the pavement in the car and expect any pedestrians to jump out of the way. A parent at DD2s school got hit by a car in this way, she was on the path and the car just suddenly came up on her. The driver was adamant it wasn't her fault and the person she hit should have moved.

Tiddlyompompom · 08/05/2012 19:31

WTF Smells Like?!!! Shock Wow. Was it another parent? Crazy.

For all those that fancy having pre-printed shitty notes for putting on windscreens! Suggested text: "You are illegally/inconsiderately parked on the pavement and have forced a mother and children into the road to pass your vehicle. Please think of pedestrians when parking."

What squeakytoy said.

Our street is also very narrow. The fire brigade had to come once and the engine could not get through. The captain was explicit in telling us to park on the pavement in the future. Wheelchairs do not always have top priority.

Iggly · 08/05/2012 19:38

Complain to your council.

I did this and they sent someone around to check it out the same day (it was a local repair garage parking like that) and they had words. Was sorted quickly!

Spuddybean · 08/05/2012 19:42

on my street you have to park right up on the pavement to just let the width of 1 car go thru. It means i sometimes have a car parked so close to my front door i can hardly leave the house. There is no room for a person to walk down the pavement single file - let alone a push chair. You would have to side step. We all walk in the road. Fuck knows what i'm going to do when i have to leave the house with the buggy.

Is it illegal to park on the pavement then? regardless of what the street circs are?

AgentZigzag · 08/05/2012 19:43

I've had cars mount the pavement while 2 YO DD2 was toddling along it Angry

They got some choice words.

AgentZigzag · 08/05/2012 19:46

I don't mind cars parked on the pavement if there's not enough space to get a car down the road else.

It's the tossers who can't be arsed to park a bit further away and walk a few hundred yards to drop their DCs off at school who wind me up.

CaptainVonTrapp · 08/05/2012 19:46

YANBU. Fucking infuriating. Incredibly self-centred and lazy.

Ring your local police. If the pavement is obstructed to the extent that you can't use it they will issue a ticket. That's what they did when I reported a constant offender on a busy road. If you don't get any joy contact your MP. It is a genuine safety issue.

I don't think I have ever been happier than the day I walked home through our estate (near two major sporting venues and several office blocks) and every single car parked on the pavement had a parking ticket. Was on a high for weeks Wink. Only happened once mind...

Nat38 · 08/05/2012 20:00

I used to fantasize about walking in the road with my pushchair/double buggy to see how the road users would like it. My retort would have been(in my fantasy!) that my pushchair has 4/8 wheels like your vehicle, I can use the road like you, just like you use the pavement to park your vehicle so I can`t use the pavement!! Imagine the tailbacks if I did that!!GrinGrin

captainmummy · 08/05/2012 20:02

Surely a road too narrow to have cars parked and let others through should not have parking on that road?

If it's too narrow, then park elsewhere.

Spuddybean · 08/05/2012 20:04

every road in our area is like it captain. The council say it's okay.

captainmummy · 08/05/2012 20:11

What do the council say if an emergency vehicle can't get through?

And sadly - YonWHale's posts are very similar to the ones i got when i posted on this subject, that a car is ok parking on the pavement, so that it doesn't get scratched by car's driving past on a narrow road. But if i scratch it by pushing past with the buggy,... well that's not on at all.

Spuddybean · 08/05/2012 20:16

An ambulance can get down. Doubt a fire engine could tho. Council say 'parking is at a premium so park where you can'. We didn't move our car for a couple of weeks (DP away and i can't drive) and people reported it as abandoned. When i spoke to the council they said park as far on the pavement as poss.

Down my parents street the cars have to park on the pavement and get tickets if they are on the road.
