Jeremy Kyle - educational or exploitative?

Aibu to think that JK could be educational on any level? I.e. preventing people from making the same mistakes or do you think it's purely exploiting vulnerable people?

I used to hate it, but now I wonder if there is any benefit to it for some people. It doesn't discuss issues like domestic violence, child neglect, addiction and responsibility, but does it do it in a way that has any positive impact? Just wondered what the genera consensus was, as most people in real life slate it but someone must be watching it...

That should say, it does discuss issues...

Maybe I should have put this in chat. By the way, I'm not interest in views on JK himself, he's obviously a twat but the premise of the programme.

I genuinely have to switch over or just mute the TV if it comes on when I'm in the room.

I just can't stand the twatty little man, his guests and all the bloody shouting.

He pushed me into the arms of Matthew Wright Grin

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 03/05/2012 19:46

Exploitative. OK, it discusses the issues, but only as a side-show to the ridiculing of people who are either vulnerable, gullible, thick or all of the above.

bochead · 03/05/2012 19:47

Exploitative. Then again I find JK to be the epitome of smug, arrogant, know-it all judgey pantedness incarnate in the masculine form & really can't stand the man.

FruitPastillesForever · 03/05/2012 19:47

Sometimes I think comparisons could be drawn with mn... I'll sit tight for the flaming...

OP posts:
FruitPastillesForever · 03/05/2012 19:48

I can only ever watch it on mute with subtitles, way too much volume.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 03/05/2012 19:48

You are clearly looking to shit-stir...

FruitPastillesForever · 03/05/2012 19:50

Why breastmilk?

OP posts:
FruitPastillesForever · 03/05/2012 19:52

Was it the mn comparison? Maybe that was harsh, but there are similarities...putting yourself and your personal feelings/ thoughts out thereto be judged.

OP posts:
FruitPastillesForever · 03/05/2012 19:53

Not just to be judged but that's a side effect of trying to get help?

catgirl1976 · 03/05/2012 19:54

I can't bear it. It exploits really vulnerable people. I can't believe people watch it - it is disgusting and has no educational value whatsoever.

Vile

TeacupTempest · 03/05/2012 20:07

JK is a twat of the highest order.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 03/05/2012 20:07

I think you make a bold, thoughtful and very legitimate point. I called it shit-stirring, though, becaue I think some AIBUers will find it a bit close to the bone...

OAM2009 · 03/05/2012 20:11

I understand your question and I have wondered if there is some positive value to it myself....but I concluded NO!

Social issues like domestic violence and child neglect are not fodder for dogfighting and the issues are never discussed in a helpful way. As far as I know cos I switched off after 10 minutes as I could hear my soul breaking Sad

FruitPastillesForever · 03/05/2012 20:12

I obviously realise in most instances, mn is more supportive, but there are occasions when it echoes the same themes.

Oooh a Jeremy Kyle question on AIBU. This won't end well will it?

LadyWithEDS · 03/05/2012 20:13

The show exploits people. I am sure some children have benefited from knowing who their father is other than that I can't see the benefit of the show.

FruitPastillesForever · 03/05/2012 20:18

I don't know if it will end well or not... Haven't seen one before. I love the way some topics are deemed unworthy of discussion. Guess I'm interested as no one in real life ever says they watch it. It's like those magazines like chat, which I think are much worse and just peddling sordid information for money.

But if you are having a bad day it can make you feel better about your own life !

exploitative

its a platform for him to express his views and humiliate people (him doing it or them doing it themselves having been manipulated into doing so by the producers) for entertainment

i have only seen clips of it i think is is vile

Birdsgottafly · 03/05/2012 20:23

I used to like it in the early days and i think that some good does come out of some of the shows, but i don't think that it is 'educational'.

I would also like to see him challenged when he goes to far with guests that are very vulnerable, it has changed my opinion of Graham, because he should be telling him when he has handled things wrongly.

FruitPastillesForever · 03/05/2012 20:25

Without trying to add further fuel to the flames. I get the impression that my OH thinks of MN as a similar social arena to JK. He can't bear either, doesnt get why people are so interested in others lives and problems. Have to say I would have agreed with him until I had a problem I needed help with and I found support on mn, as I couldn't find it anywhere else. Just wonder if for some people, they see JK as a mn substitute, of course it's more complicated than that... Much more. But the average age on mn is probably 30's. Jobseems uk be more 20's.

OP posts:
LadyWithEDS · 03/05/2012 20:27

Are you saying OP, that your oh thinks some people on MN treat posters like JK does, putting other posters down and trying to humilliate them to feel better about themselves?
