Mumsnet and McDonalds

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

MN total sell out nowadays

Well you could always become a MNReject too if you don't like it. Confused as to why you post here if you aren't happy with the way it is run?.

MN is a business just like any other - except it does a HUGE amount for it's members and followers - and the general public. It wouldn't be half as popular if it was pay-per-view and lots and lots of valuable help, assistance, comfort and bloody fun would be lost to those who couldn't afford it.

McD's is also a business. If you don't like it, don't eat there (and don't use their toilets!). If you don't like MN's business contacts, leave MN.

Is it really that hard?

nethunsreject · 03/05/2012 16:31

Oh yes, God bless it. eh?! Wink

Aye, it's a business, exactly. And it is a sell out.

I'll use it because many members have been a source of comfort and humour to me over the last 8 or 9 years. Doesn't mean I have to like what NHQ get up to. But don't delude yourself that they give a toss about their members or about anything beyond revenue.

Moominsarescary · 03/05/2012 16:31

usual big mac buns?

hairylemon · 03/05/2012 16:34

WHO GIVES A RATS FANNY?

Dont like an ad dont buy the shit
Dont like McDs dont eat it

its really not that difficult

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 16:34

Errr LtEve not sure of the need for such drama. The future of MN doesn't rest with it's McDonalds advertising, there are other companies.Hmm

usualsuspect · 03/05/2012 16:36

Its snobbery I reckon , maybe some members don't want to be associated with a website that carries McDonalds ads.

They wouldn't complain if it was Pizza express or some other poncey place.

usualsuspect · 03/05/2012 16:37

Pizza express

nethunsreject · 03/05/2012 16:38

Lol at Pizza Express being poncey.

Aye, they are shite an' all. Ditto Pret (McDonalds for middle class).

usualsuspect · 03/05/2012 16:38

I dunno why I wrote pizza express twice , stupid phone Grin

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 16:53

Ummmm... I think that was me quoting DH quoting off the Internet so it may not be terribly accurate.. Partic as he was prob wanking over porn at the time? Hmm

I don't like maccy d's, but I am more disillusioned with mumsnet. Call me naive, but I sort of believed the 'community spirit, not profit orientated' blurb and feel a bit of a twit now. Next they'll be a vote on Nestlé and next time I'm in sainsburys I'll see ' Blah blah formula brought to you by mumsnet'. Slippery slope and all that.

TheSinglePringleWillicopters · 03/05/2012 16:55

What's the deal with nestle?

usualsuspect · 03/05/2012 16:56

Don't start them all off about nestle

TheSinglePringleWillicopters · 03/05/2012 16:57

Soooo McDonald's and mumsnet are arm in arm now

5madthings · 03/05/2012 16:59

i so cant bring myself to get bothered by this, mnet is free for its users therefore they need advertisers to get an income, one of whom is mc donalds [shrug]

i had mc donalds for lunch yesterday i was hugely impressed when dp called on leaving work to say that he would stop on his way home and pick us one up for lunch, older 4 all out at school and pre-school, little one asleep in bed and we got to sit and eat our big mac and fried in peace, it was BLISS! Grin

WorraLiberty · 03/05/2012 17:00

I couldn't care less if MN advertised Nestlé products either.

I suspect more posters use them than they're prepared to let on anyway.

WorraLiberty · 03/05/2012 17:01

and we got to sit and eat our big mac and fried in peace,

You should have turned the heating down Shock Grin

LtEveDallas · 03/05/2012 17:02

Oh right nethunsreject - i get it, you just dont have the courage of your own convictions - remind me, what's the definition of 'sell out' again?

No drama MrsH, just don't understand why someone would. Onto us being a part of something they don't approve of? Tell you what though, you go and find them a company willing to pay the same or more than McDs and bobs yer uncle - no more McDs advertising to affront your sensibilities.

Personally I think McDs is a load of shite - don't eat it myself, nor feed it to my child, but getting my knickers in a twist over a couple of adverts? Nah.

LtEveDallas · 03/05/2012 17:04

Ahhh DYAC. "would want to be part of"

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 17:04

Tatty I totally agree and all these people boasting about how much they love McD's advertising would be the first ones to moan if all the new academies were allowed to have McD logo's across all the text books or other promotional schemes a la the US.

But hey just say no ,advertising clearly has no impact on consumption, companies just like spending millions for the hell of it.Hmm

5madthings · 03/05/2012 17:05

lol worra Grin big mac and frieS and a chocolate shake Grin PLUS we had some pickled onion monster munch in the cupboard we had afterwards, food of the gods Grin

usualsuspect · 03/05/2012 17:08

Would you object if it was a more upmarket company?

TheSinglePringleWillicopters · 03/05/2012 17:09

It's Burger King you want to be angry at! There food is horrible and in no way makes them the king of burgers

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 17:09

It's nothing about being upmarket and all about having an impact on the health of children.

usualsuspect · 03/05/2012 17:10

The Hand Made Burger co more to your liking?

cheesesarnie · 03/05/2012 17:12

why cant it be blossom hill etc
