To be TERRIFIED of having a bikini wax?

I thought I'd be braver now I've been through childbirth, but am still too wimpy to have a bikini wax and have just cancelled an appointment to have one on Monday. How pathetic am I being? Are they as bad as I think?

Not talking pornstar type wax, just a tidy up.

Pop a painkiller just before the appointment. Hot wax definitely.

Don't, then. Confused

Daneel · 12/04/2012 20:01

It's not compulsory, really! And loads of women and girls wear bikini tops (or whatever) with little board shorts, mostly at the beach, but some at the pool too.

Vagabond · 12/04/2012 20:25

The solution is v simple and a secret known by most nurses.

Buy a tube of topical anaesthetic from Boots called Emla Cream. You apply a thick-ish layer of the cream and leave it on for about half an hour (up to two hours) before your waxing session. It completely numbs the area and you will barely feel a thing. I promise you, it works.

You don't have to leave the thick cream on for long. Just let it sink in a bit and then you can get dressed as normal. Think 'fake tan' time. It's really only good for small areas like bikini, face or underarms...... Otherwise it gets too expensive. A tube (about 4 quid) should last two visits.

Nurses use this sort of cream when they have to inject children (IV's etc) or scaredy cats. It works! Good luck!

God knows why but I went for a Hollywood - it was horrendous, she had to cut wax out and rip it up several times. I was in agony. She ripped some of my skin up too Sad my poor fanny.
She asked if I was married before she started (saw I had dd) I said not, the thought that she was punishing me has crossed my mind...

ButteryBiscuitBase · 12/04/2012 20:35

I'm gonna try that vagabond! I'm too scared to go for one but really want to. A while ago I bought a home wax kit. I applied the wax but when I put the strip on and pulled it hurt WAY too much. So I screamed out and jumped in the shower to try and wash it off, grabbed first shower gel to wash it off. Turned out I'd grabbed dps mint original source stuff... It stung the waxed area like MAD!
I screamed again, dp came rushing up to find me in a right state. Bit of a passion killer... Iv stuck to veet since then!

YusMilady · 12/04/2012 20:38

Don't do it. Really. Why not just try on the costume you'll be wearing to the pool, then trim yer spiders legs with a razor? Don't waste your money on fanny waxing - it's a mug's game.

scarletforya · 12/04/2012 20:39

Thanks for the tip Vagabond, is it ok to use that cream when pregnant I wonder?

I got a wax last week and it did make me wince quite a bit! It wasn't too bad though, I could still gossip with the girl doing it.

candr · 12/04/2012 20:49

Don't go when it is TOTM as it is more painful but it is a bearable pain and stops as soon as they stop. You may be a bit sticky afterwards so wear baggy trousers and plan to go straight home (not shopping where your jeans stick to your crotch and you keep scratching like you have crabs!)

ChuffMuffin · 12/04/2012 20:51

I uncontrollably laugh every time I have it done. It's not funny. I don't know why I laugh :(

Also the first time I had it done I shrieked and grabbed the beautician's hand. Except it wasn't her hand. It was her huge boob. Never went back there again Grin

TunipTheVegemal · 12/04/2012 20:52

It hurts. That is Nature's way of telling you it is stupid.
Just get a sensibly-cut swimsuit.

Babylon1 · 12/04/2012 21:01

Just do it!! Hot wax and away you go!

Leg wax is definitely worse so I shave them, but underarm and bikini legs waxed every 6-8 weeks!! No problem xGrin

Kayano · 12/04/2012 21:05

I had a bikini wax it was
Fine, bit unexpected and I jumped, moved and stuck my upper thigh to my fanjo Hmm

Then I had my underarms done... Hmm oh sorry UNDERARM

Because it hurt so much I told her to get the hell away from me and had one hairy armpit that I had to shave when I got home.

Vagabond · 12/04/2012 21:14

Trust me - I used to practically chew a stick when I had a bikini wax. I used to SWEAT with the pain. Emla Cream changed waxes forever for me. I was so blasé during my last wax that the beautician asked me if I was ok!

There is also another cream available from ebay called the "No Scream Cream" but it's basically the same as Emla and costs 3 times the price. Lots of people also use this cream when they have tattoos apparently. My skin is virgin on the tat front so I have no idea. Grin

I would not use while pregnant though. Just in case..... :-)

ilovehills · 12/04/2012 21:17

Don't bother. Just tuck the hair into your swimming costume or bikini!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 12/04/2012 21:21

ilovehills - ah, the '70s look! Wink

Angelico · 12/04/2012 21:31

Vagabond you totally stole my thunder with that cream tip - although I didn't know the name :) In chemists one night when a guy came in and asked about a cream for his son who was going for a tattoo. It was only a couple of quid. Goggle eyed I waited till he was gone and asked the girl behind the counter, "Do you think that would work for waxing?" She (wide-eyed) answers, "Oooooooh, I never thought of that before!" Cue two women grinning idiotically in a conspiratorial fashion! :o

Now I know the name I will for sure find it! (But I'm pregnant too so don't know if that is okay). Shaved that area last week for a swim and it tortured me for days afterwards.

redexpat · 12/04/2012 21:54

Yes it hurts but only for a second. It hurts less than your ankles because the skin is thicker. Stop being a wuss.

LydiaWickham · 12/04/2012 22:02

If you don't want it done, don't, but if you do want it done, don't fear the pain, as long as it's hot wax it's really not that bad.

Vagabond · 12/04/2012 22:06

Ha ha Angelico! Sorry to steal your thunder. As I said in my first post, this was a tip handed down from all my years of knowing nurses when I lived in Dubai.x

sleeplessinderbyshire · 12/04/2012 22:11

i had my first ever wax a month ago. Had a brazillian. Am pregnant and cannot see bikini area so usual shaving was out. It really hardly hurt at all and once I'd got over the horror of the therapist seeing my bits (frankly it's her job and she was lovely and pointed out that if she were embarrassed by it she'd be in the wrong job) it hardly hurt at all and was perfect for 3 weeks. just need to find a free hour to go again as I'm getting all hairy again now (usually shave every 2days so 3 weeks is an amazing result) she used hot wax not strips

Pickthatupplease · 12/04/2012 22:43

I've never been brave enough either. Do you have to do frog legs just like a smear? Sounds horrid Hmm

SodoffBaldrick · 12/04/2012 22:53

God, I'm in NZ and have just googled Emla cream - the online pharmacies are flogging it for $88 - that's about forty quid!! Shock

I know it is expensive here, but that takes the Biscuit
