To not lend my Kindle to somebody for the weekend?

Saw a friend of a friend at lunchtime today when I was out getting a sandwich - we work in the same building. We drank our coffee together and got talking about books we've read lately. I told her she should read something I've just finished on my Kindle because I really enjoyed it.

Her: 'I haven't got a Kindle though, could I borrow yours and give it back when I've read it?'

Me (shocked!): 'Um sorry, no, I use it all the time'.

Her: 'But I'm a really fast reader - I could read it over the weekend and give it back Monday.'

Me: (feeling really uncomfortable now): 'Sorry, no, honestly, I don't even let the DC use it, I'm so attached to it

Her: Oh. Okay then (huffily). Well I'm off anyway. .

WTF? I love my Kindle. It has a cover for its cover and everything. So she can fuck right off.

Just wanted to rant.

If I had one she'd have to pry it out of my cold dead hand!

lolajane2009 · 12/04/2012 13:33

YANbU,
lol i wouldn't either. its 180 pounds of kit. i love my kindle too

pjmama · 12/04/2012 13:33

YANBU. She can buy her own! Grin

PersonalClown · 12/04/2012 13:34

No one touches my Kindle.

sue52 · 12/04/2012 13:35

It's not like letting someone borrow a book. Agree that your friend should "fuck right off" and while she's there, she can buy her own.

DaisySteiner · 12/04/2012 13:35

YANBU. LOL @ 'a cover for its cover'

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 13:36

Am feeling slightly better now that for the first time, everybody is agreeing with me on AIBU.

Still hyperventilating slightly though

That's very cheeky. She must do a lot huffing and stropping.

halcyondays · 12/04/2012 13:38

Yanbu

WandaDoff · 12/04/2012 13:39

YANBU

My Kindle belongs to me & me only.

KateSpade · 12/04/2012 13:39

Just wanted to say I agree with you op...

I lent my brand new £180 camera to a friend to take 1 picture what happened? She broke it!
I'm never lending anything to anyone ever again!

daisydoodoo · 12/04/2012 13:39

NO, yanbu. A kindle is different to a book, without my kindle i would have nothing else to read. I need to read each night before i go to sleep, even if i am drunk i still read at least a couple of pages.
I was a reluctant kindle convert but now i couldn;t go back to books. Finally my bedroom doesnt have stacks of books everywhere, just in case i want to read them again.

ArtVandelay · 12/04/2012 13:39

YANBU. You wouldn't lend your phone or your laptop. Someone just asked me if they could borrow my sewing machine for 3 weeks so they could do a sewing course but didn't want to spend 150 quid on a machine. I was pretty surprised but I explained nicely that its quite a personal thing and I don't want its settings changing or anything so 'no'. I got the distinct impression she thought I was being a cow. Some things are just inappropriate for lending!

PoppadumPreach · 12/04/2012 13:39

tell her you'll take her phone as collateral.

seriously, she's being a cheeky cow. YANBU

ToryLovell · 12/04/2012 13:40

YANBU totally different to letting someone borrow a book.

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 13:40

Fondle me too - not least because I recently downloaded a free 'orgasms' book Blush

Who wouldn't say yes to a free orgasm?

I would NEVER let anyone borrow my kindle. It's got about £300 worth of books on it. That's too big an ask.

FunnysInLaJardin · 12/04/2012 13:41

YANBU. She is a cheecky caaaa

FunnysInLaJardin · 12/04/2012 13:42

oops cheeky

TobyLerone · 12/04/2012 13:42

I'd possibly lend it to a good friend for the weekend, if she needed it (boring work-related course/hospital visit etc). I wouldn't lend it to a work colleague just so that she could read a particular book which she was too tight to buy for herself on it.
