To not lend my Kindle to somebody for the weekend?

Saw a friend of a friend at lunchtime today when I was out getting a sandwich - we work in the same building. We drank our coffee together and got talking about books we've read lately. I told her she should read something I've just finished on my Kindle because I really enjoyed it.

Her: 'I haven't got a Kindle though, could I borrow yours and give it back when I've read it?'

Me (shocked!): 'Um sorry, no, I use it all the time'.

Her: 'But I'm a really fast reader - I could read it over the weekend and give it back Monday.'

Me: (feeling really uncomfortable now): 'Sorry, no, honestly, I don't even let the DC use it, I'm so attached to it

Her: Oh. Okay then (huffily). Well I'm off anyway. .

WTF? I love my Kindle. It has a cover for its cover and everything. So she can fuck right off.

Just wanted to rant.

stupid woman!
why would you lend her the kindle?
it's not like it's a £7 book!

ShockShock

Friend of a friend? What an opportunist!
I don't lend my kindle to anyone but DD. Not only is it expensive, it's personal.
The many books that I have on it are a reflection of me, and I don't want just anyone rummaging around to find out my shameful secrets. Grin

Lizcat · 12/04/2012 13:43

It is MY kindle I do not share.

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 13:43

Oops Fallen I was thinking the same, but now I've broadcast my shameful secrets across the WWW....

It's a bit weird asking to borrow someone's Kindle; it's akin to asking to borrow their iPad or mobile in some ways. But the main point is, if you ask if you can borrow something and the other person says no, you suck it up and carry merrily on, not have a sulk and strop off. Some 'friend'!

HellonHeels · 12/04/2012 13:44

Blimey! That is just, well, odd. Agree with whoever above said it was like asking to borrow a phone. If she had her own kindle I think there's a way of re-registering them so she could read your book on her Kindle, but I'd only do that with a close friend.

I love my kindle!

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 13:45

Hmm well she's no longer a friend of a friend - you mess with my kindle, you mess with my whole faaaaaaamily

YANBU.

She is BVU to even ask???

don't lend anything if you ask me - it is bound to get damaged.

emblosion · 12/04/2012 13:46

YANBU my kindle is my most prized possession, I actually love it and would never lend it outout

ArtVandelay · 12/04/2012 13:46

Does she understand what a Kindle is and how valuable it is? (I didn't until recently - luddite)

hallelujahheisrisen · 12/04/2012 13:46

wouldn't let her borrow a book either.. definitely would not let he borrow something as expensive as a kindle.

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 12/04/2012 13:47

YANBU.

My Kindle is mine. I keep it to hand always. I couldn't imagine not having it for a whole weekend, it's even worse than not having your mobile.

juneybean · 12/04/2012 13:48

YANBU! I get twitchy if people even touch mine.

Thumbwitch · 12/04/2012 13:49

She's a cheeky mare! She could get the book from the library, or, heaven forfend, a shop! She doesn't have to borrow your Kindle and no, YANBU at all not to lend it to her.

What if she'd dropped it and broken it? Shock

NB I don't have a Kindle, nor want one, but I still feel your pain and completely understand your rationale. I don't much like lending books to people, never mind costly bits of electronica!

PeelingBells · 12/04/2012 13:49

YANBU. The thing is I would've leant it to a friend when it had about one book on it but that was the time it was new and I was addicted to it, now I would lend it out but can't as have loads of the above type free orgasms books and sort out your crazy mind, get a life type books on it.

TheSockPuppet · 12/04/2012 13:50

Yanbu, I wouldn't lend anyone my kindle!

Chilenachica · 12/04/2012 13:51

I don't have a Kindle, so can't comment on the fantastic ness of them, but she wouldn't be getting her grubby little mits on my iPad. I take it, as you work in the same building, that she is gainfully employed, which means she should buy her own bleedin' techie gadgets. She's a cheeky mare.

lolajane2009 · 12/04/2012 13:51

in fact, we share so bad in this house we have 2 kindles.

BusinessTrills · 12/04/2012 13:52

I echo the "cold dead hands" comment.

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 13:53

I'm tempted to leave a piece of poo on her car when I leave this afternoon. Is that legal? Just a small piece.

ErikNorseman · 12/04/2012 13:54

No fucking way! Shock I need my kindle. Lending it would be like lending all the books not lending one book! What a div

plus I couldn't risk her seeing my extensive slashfic collection

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 13:54

Not mine, I may add. She's getting nothing out of me Smile

ProfCoxWouldGetIt · 12/04/2012 13:54

I lent my kindle to a friend for a weekend, so he could see if he wanted to get one, I was finishing up a physical book, so wasn't using it and agreed.

Stupid twat that he is "unknowingly" downloaded £50 of books because he "thought they were all free" I've still not got my money back and I'm minus a friend, but I will never lend anything out again that can spend my money without me being present

minsmum · 12/04/2012 13:58

Yanbu I was getting twitchy last night when DH read a page from my Kindle whilst sitting next to me, being out of my sight no no no no.

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 13:58

Okay I get the feeling you are all stepping away from my poo comment....

I was (kind of) joking.
