To not lend my Kindle to somebody for the weekend?

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 13:32

Saw a friend of a friend at lunchtime today when I was out getting a sandwich - we work in the same building. We drank our coffee together and got talking about books we've read lately. I told her she should read something I've just finished on my Kindle because I really enjoyed it.

Her: 'I haven't got a Kindle though, could I borrow yours and give it back when I've read it?'

Me (shocked!): 'Um sorry, no, I use it all the time'.

Her: 'But I'm a really fast reader - I could read it over the weekend and give it back Monday.'

Me: (feeling really uncomfortable now): 'Sorry, no, honestly, I don't even let the DC use it, I'm so attached to it

Her: Oh. Okay then (huffily). Well I'm off anyway. .

WTF? I love my Kindle. It has a cover for its cover and everything. So she can fuck right off.

Just wanted to rant.

No because a) my kidle is mine and b) it's full of filthy porn!

valiumredhead · 12/04/2012 16:20

angel ha ha ha ha ha ha! I would be too ashamed to let anyone read the utter drivel I have on my one Flowers in the Attic

HellonHeels · 12/04/2012 16:26

ProfCox and others who've had accidental purchases - Amazon are usually very good about refunds if that happens. I bought a book I didn't mean to and just emailed the customer services - they removed it from my Kindle and account and refunded me straight away. Would be worth asking them about your £50 worth of unwanted book purchases. (What a dick your "friend" was though!)

HellonHeels · 12/04/2012 16:27

BTW I am a bit pissed off with my Kindle as it won't keep a charge on the battery for more than a day. I have to charge it every night or it dies :-(

Anyone know how I can stop this?

valiumredhead · 12/04/2012 16:30

I'm pissed off with the editing mistakes and typos/spelling on Kindle books - pisses me right off - might do a separate thread!

hellon ring Amazon support - they are very good and err supportive Grin

MrsCampbellBlack · 12/04/2012 16:30

Hellonwheels - you need to take it/send it back - my charge lasts for weeks.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 12/04/2012 16:31

My god, no way would I willingly let anyone get their hands on my kindleShock

I came over all murderous at work one night when someone got hold of my kindle whilst I was out of the office and managed to bend the clips that hold it in it's very expensive cover with lightAngry

I never did identify the culprit which is probably a good job because an awful fate may have befallen them

I don't get it really.....you wouldn't browse someone's phone so what makes people think it is ok to nosey around on someone's kindleHmm

I will not admit to having porn on there to anyone

valiumredhead · 12/04/2012 16:32

where does one download porn?

MsVestibule · 12/04/2012 16:32

Grin at Flowers In The Attic, Valium. I loved that series of books, I was only thinking about them a few days ago. Is it really true you can get tar out of hair by soaking it in copious amounts of wee?

valiumredhead · 12/04/2012 16:36

I have no idea Grin

They really are revoltingly saucy books. I am stunned at the content, I read them when I was about 12 and am 41 now so I am enjoying them in a different way Grin Soooooo badly written, almost comical!

And all these men that can't control themselves around young 15 year olds! Shock

valiumredhead · 12/04/2012 16:36

AND did you know if you are locked in an attic for 3 years you can became a world class ballerina and a doctor? Grin

EightiesChick · 12/04/2012 16:45

I also read them when I was about 12. Curious now about how well they've aged, or how well I have Grin

angeltattoo · 12/04/2012 16:47

An 'interesting' variety of books can be downloaded from Amazon.

And BYW i have discovered you can password protect it, but like someome said no other bugger should be snooping through your kindle!

Also, mine broke and Kindle support were very good at sorting it.

And the typos drive me mad too, absolutely shocking!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 12/04/2012 16:50

search erotic fiction on amazon Valium and all sorts of stuff will come up

My 'specialist fiction' is now safely archived due to co workers who don't understand kinidle ettiquette.

YANBU.

If you read all your books on the Kindle how does she expect you to do your reading while she has it? Is she thinking you won't read anything for an entire weekend?! Shock

I don't have one, I find it hard to really get into a book that's on a screen and problems like HellonHeels is having would really annoy me, but if I did own one there is no way I would lend it to anyone.

I don't even like to lend real books out to people because they either forget to give them back, they come back dirty or damaged or in MIL's case, they are ignored for three months and then sold at the car book sale! Which she was always weirdly proud of and never offered to replace them.

I don't lend books to people now. Ever. So don't ask, alright. It makes me feel a bit stabby.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 12/04/2012 17:18

Flowers in the Attic though. I've done a reread as an adult and I think it held up but only because I was fond of it in my early teens.

Made me laugh though, to think at twelve I was hiding my Judy Blume's from my parents because of the embarrassing bits about bras and periods while at the same time openly reading Flowers in the Attic because I'd found it on my Mum's bookshelves.

iwantavuvezela · 12/04/2012 17:24

Buy her the paperback option, cheaper and easier than trying to get your kindle back! I must say I wouldn't ask to borrow a kindle, maybe a book, but not something of high value .....

perceptionreality · 12/04/2012 18:08

Thanks for the advice. It sounds very appealing to have all books in one place.

I still have not got over the trauma of coming home from university and finding my mum had given all my favourite books (some of which I had studied) to Oxfam :(

Groovee · 12/04/2012 18:27

She can join the library and order the book through them. I'd never ask to borrow a kindle. It was bad enough getting our PSP charger off someone.

painauchoc · 12/04/2012 18:48

YANBU.
Your kindle, and what you have on it, is personal!

bettybat · 12/04/2012 18:48

A Kindle is not something I'm ever going to buy - believe me, I'm a complete tech geek and can see the brilliance of them. But I just love having physical books far too much. Sometimes I stand in front of my bookcases and gaze lovingly at the covers, and I like underlining passages way too much and writing notes and stuff, and love different cover art.

But. Even I know you don't ask to borrow someone's Kindle. Ever. Joey doesn't share.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/04/2012 18:54

YANBU

I don't let anyone borrow my Kindle, not even DH.

I don't even like it when anyone looks at it. My Dad is forever wanting to 'have a look' because he wants one really but my Mum thinks he doesn't need one Hmm.
I am tempted to just flipping buy him one so that he leaves mine alone!

bobbledunk · 12/04/2012 18:57

Nobody gets the kindleGrin

claudedebussy · 12/04/2012 18:58

sharing a kindle is like sharing a mooncup. just not done.

ArtVandelay · 12/04/2012 18:59

Oldraver I love your story about your broken sewing machine. Did your eyes meet over a bobbin? I'm not being funny, I find it genuinely lovely :)
