To not lend my Kindle to somebody for the weekend?

Saw a friend of a friend at lunchtime today when I was out getting a sandwich - we work in the same building. We drank our coffee together and got talking about books we've read lately. I told her she should read something I've just finished on my Kindle because I really enjoyed it.

Her: 'I haven't got a Kindle though, could I borrow yours and give it back when I've read it?'

Me (shocked!): 'Um sorry, no, I use it all the time'.

Her: 'But I'm a really fast reader - I could read it over the weekend and give it back Monday.'

Me: (feeling really uncomfortable now): 'Sorry, no, honestly, I don't even let the DC use it, I'm so attached to it

Her: Oh. Okay then (huffily). Well I'm off anyway. .

WTF? I love my Kindle. It has a cover for its cover and everything. So she can fuck right off.

Just wanted to rant.

YANBU. My Kindle stays with me, wherever I go. Always.

Safire · 12/04/2012 14:02

YANBU. There are some things people really should know better than to ask for! And shouldn't be surprised at being told no, she is BU.

ariadneoliver · 12/04/2012 14:04

She is as we say 'having a laugh'. This reflects my view on the matter

Maybe I should print that out and stick it on her car.

YADNBU - no way I'd lend my Kindle to anyone. It's my preccciioouussssss :D

WeShouldOpenABar · 12/04/2012 14:11

this is bringing back awful memories for me , I lent my kindle out to my grandmother , I was being really nice she missed books , cant hold them from arthritis cant see them because the writing is so small, she broke it :(

she was really upset about and i didnt show how upset i was, she is my grandmother afterall but no one is ever getting my new one

I had to tell her i got the old one fixed for £20 but i was lying it was a month out of warranty and i had to buy a new one.

I felt really bad for being annoyed at her and got everyone to club together to get her a new one too (mainly so she wouldnt have to borrow mine ever again!)

What a spoilt madam, how rude of her!

MsVestibule · 12/04/2012 14:12

She's got a bloody cheek. You could be halfway through another book on there and want to read it at the weekend! It's hardly the same as passing on a used paperback is it?

YANBU.

oldraver · 12/04/2012 14:19

She has a cheek for getting in a huff as well

Art I no longer let on to people I own a sewing machine after having several returned in need of repair

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 14:21

Marilyn sorry just had a look on Amazon and it's £1.98 now.

Of course I have no idea if it's worth it since I've not read it Smile

YANBU. She is out of order & can't see how cheeky she's being. I have come to the conclusion now that I'm an old bat that I never lend anything - I either give it or tell them to get their own. If it's a book I tell 'em to go to the library.

Don't know about kindles work of the devil but for sure would not lend it.

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 14:26

I like your style Miranda

Thanks Oldraver, it was at the back of my mind that I was being a bit princessey about it but then I knew it would come back in bits and then I'd be after her for money /fuming so I figured I was not lending it in everyone's best interest.

Besides - how do you need to do a bloody course to decide if you like sewing or not? How about trying to mend a sock or something. Did you enjoy it? Yes - you like sewing. No - you don't like sewing Hmm

badtasteflump · 12/04/2012 14:39

Isn't a sewing machine a bit of a big thing to lend anyway? My mum has one -we had to take it to get repaired. We had to get an end each to huff it into the car Confused.

Maybe it's a bit of an antique though....
