Just as the title says really - that if you use text speak in your posts I do assume that you are probably a less intelligent poster.
AIBU?

I would assume you were a lot younger than me and I would struggle to understand what you were saying. Not less intelligent though.

LentillyFart · 06/04/2012 11:24

YANBU at all. I absolutely detest text speak and judge the poster accordingly. Same if they say 'Hun' which I loathe so much it makes my piss boil.

usualsuspect · 06/04/2012 11:25

wateva

MorrisZapp · 06/04/2012 11:26

Yanbu

Me too, mostly.

usualsuspect · 06/04/2012 11:27

If I can read a post I don't care how its written.

Eggsits · 06/04/2012 11:28

Oh lesley - I hope this does not turn nasty.

Personally, I don't even use text speak in text messages, but I am old and a pedant.

usualsuspect · 06/04/2012 11:28

Is YABU a bit like text speak?

Showmethemhappyfeet · 06/04/2012 11:28

I think that's a ridiculous statement to be honest! How can you possibly take intelligence from text speak. Maybe they just can't be bothered writing the whole word out?

WorraLiberty · 06/04/2012 11:31

I fucking hate text speak!

Having said that, I don't think it shows anything to do with intelligence or lack of it...it's just a quick way of typing for some people.

If it did show a lack of intelligence then we'd all be fucked because this is the only forum I've been on where the majority of us can't even be bothered to type the word 'son'.

usualsuspect · 06/04/2012 11:31

Maybe this thread will stop the less intelligent people posting on MN.
Then you and your clever mates can have it all to yourselves.

OhChristHasRisenFENTON · 06/04/2012 11:35

IK wotU mean. sumtyms d txt spk 1s gt ryt on my lst nerve. I mean hw hrd S it 2 jst uz propr nglish?

Nyway, Ive lots 2 do 2day so ill hav2 ctch u l8r. CU sn.

PurplePidjINRE · 06/04/2012 11:36

People who post in text speak present themselves as lazier than those using whole words certainly. And in many cases, if you can't be bothered to communicate your issue clearly then I'm significantly less likely to bother replying.

Worse when the poster is flamed for poor grammar/spelling when English doesn't appear to be their first language Angry

lesley33 · 06/04/2012 11:36

Usual - I am not saying less intelligent people shouldn't be on here - MN is for everyone. And I think you are a very intelligent poster.

OP posts:
PomBearWithAnOFRS · 06/04/2012 11:37

I would probably assume they're younger rather than less intelligent. I'm an owld gimmer and don't use textspeak anywhere and have been known to shed real tears over apostrophe abuse and grammatical errors
That said, I am less likely to read a post with a lot of textspeak in it, hun makes me cringe, and I don't bother to try and interpret a post like that, I just whizz past and ignore it. If they can't be bothered to type it out properly, I can't be bothered to work out what they mean. It's laziness, not lack of intelligence.

SodoffBaldrick · 06/04/2012 11:37

Why is it called 'text speak? The whole point is that it's written, not spoken. [buconfused]

Anyway, it certainly does a brilliant job of making people appear a bit fick; whether or not they actually are is another matter entirely though I'd question the sensibilities of someone who isn't but who willingly does something that very much makes them seem so.

Mrsrobertduvall · 06/04/2012 11:38

I would assume they were a lot younger ie twenties.
I do not text at all.
I accept I am not "down with the kids" but can understand what they're writing. I don't like it, but hey ho.

Now what I do hate is babe, huns and MaccyD. And Sainsbos.

LoopyLoeufdePaques · 06/04/2012 11:38

I've noticed that older people - my mum, aunt etc. use it a lot more than my generation. I haven't spoken to my mum about it, but I suspect it is because she thinks it's the done thing, and I also suspect it takes her longer to find shortened words for everything.

I hate it too, and won't post in reply to it, but I assume the writers are young (or possible older!), don't know the protocol and might be embarrassed to know how they are perceived, not necessarily unintelligent.

storminabuttercup · 06/04/2012 11:40

I don't use text speak, I don't like it.

However I don't think it's use means the person is less intelligent.

Like I said, I don't use it, doesn't mean I'm intelligent. I'm not very bright at all.

usualsuspect · 06/04/2012 11:40

I have no objection to laziness , I'm a very lazy typist.

Rhinosaurus · 06/04/2012 11:41

I don't know about text speak but bloody iPhone and iPad auto correct often makes me look like an idiot fuckwit best one recently, discussing constipation and it put lactation instead of impaction!

At least I'm not the only one...
autocorrect howlers!

McFluffster · 06/04/2012 11:42

I would assume younger but not necessarily less intelligent.

usualsuspect · 06/04/2012 11:43

I think its sad really that you would ignore someone on MN just because of the way they type.

GreenEyesAndHam · 06/04/2012 11:43

I feel a bit like that about posters with name/number combinations for their usernames.

Total dullards completely lacking in any imagination Wink

JasperJohns · 06/04/2012 11:44

I know several huns people in their 30s who post on FB and Twitter in text speak. I have just hidden one this morning.

I do think they're morons, yes.

bettybat · 06/04/2012 11:44

I saw someone in here respond with UANBU. I really did just think - why not use the Y for you instead of a U?? It didn't make any sense.
