Just as the title says really - that if you use text speak in your posts I do assume that you are probably a less intelligent poster.

This make me larf a bit.

I have a v good friend who uses txtspk all the time. Abbreviations, teen lingo, the works. She's an academic with teenage children.

I'm going to link her to this thread [bugrin]

supernannyisace · 06/04/2012 12:36

I don't understand text 'speak' so don't read it.

I see the use of it in actual texting, but no typing. I have a FB 'friend' who was a RL friend years ago - and I know she can spell and use big words but insists on typing the text speak - lk she is dawn wiv teh kids??? (see I said I couldn't do it..).

I don't think they are less intelligent, but I don't like it.

IamtheEasterZombieEggEater · 06/04/2012 12:41

Zombie is trying to avoid a nap. However she did have very disturbed night and is fading fast now. It's probably best that she listens to what her body is trying to tell her.

Mrsjay · 06/04/2012 12:43

I wouldnt assume they were a bit thick i would think they were younger than me Grin although i dont like it either i can't read most of it ,

MyDogShitsShoes · 06/04/2012 12:45

I have to be honest and say this kind of thread makes me really fucking angry.

I don't like text speak, don't understand it, can't use it, don't see the point in it.

BUT I dislike judging much much more.

It's threads like this that give MN it's middle class, dm reading, elitist reputation.

Communication and language evolves, it always has and hopefully always will. How bloody dare anyone judge someone because they are using a modern form of typing.

"i'm less likely to reply to an op who uses text speak" aaargh. So someone is less deserving of help and advice because they say thnx instead of Thanks . How the hell is "aibu" any different or less lazy?

Let's just hope no one falls off their snobby high horse and needs help from a paramedic who got confused between should've and should of in school.

God I needed that [bugrin]

Mrsjay · 06/04/2012 12:45

and isnt things like DH DD gps the same as text speak , why not type daughter husband or grand parents Hmm

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 06/04/2012 12:46

and another thread hidden.

Mrsjay · 06/04/2012 12:47

do you feel better mydogeats I agree with you why should somebody who types in text deserve less support or advice are they not worthy ?

I think it's rude to use text speak on mumsnet- it means you have made no effort to understand the culture of the site, and it also creates problems for users who need particular software to help them read posts if they have vision problems.

ariadne1 · 06/04/2012 12:53

I can't see it has any bearing whatsoever on intelligence. Whatever made you come to this conclusion?

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/04/2012 12:53

Well as I said above, my brain just doesn't compute it.
It takes far too long for me to decipher.
I'm too old to change that, my ds16 isn't.
So not elitist, dm reading, judgemental at all.
Just middle aged and entitled to have an opinion on a website Confused.

Mrsjay · 06/04/2012 12:54

genuine question what is the culture of mumsnet ?

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/04/2012 12:55

Apparently middle class, dm reading elitists MrsJay.

meditrina · 06/04/2012 12:56

I wouldn't draw any conclusions about the poster's intelligence.

I would however assume they were not pausing to consider who their audience is. Text speak is not generally welcome or much used on MN. New posters, or the very self-absorbed, might not be able to perceive that.

That probably won't make much difference if you are asking for help here (there are so many nice posters, after all), but it will mean that posts are less persuasive in a debate thread. Not because it is text per se, but because it is demonstrating a lack of awareness of the normal style of the community.

Mrsjay · 06/04/2012 12:56

oh thats not me then ladybeagleeyes ill get me coat Grin

lesley33 · 06/04/2012 12:58

zombieslayer did a thread recently about what is considered acceptable and not acceptable here and what different references mean.

LeBOF · 06/04/2012 12:58

It's hard to pin down- but things like not lolling and hunning, explaining things properly, opportunities for a bit of intellectual posturing etc. The opposite of the caps lock sweariness of YouTube comment streams. A general avoidance of text speak. All the things that make it a bit different.

MrsBovary · 06/04/2012 12:59

I don't know if I'd say they're less intelligent, but I know I'm less likely to read their posts, and would perhaps wonder if they'd just arrived from Nethuns or similar such site.

MyDogShitsShoes · 06/04/2012 12:59

Thank you mrsjay much better thanks!

Similat to another pp I have a very close friend who is severely dislexic (sp!). She one of the most intelligent highly educated people o know and has a very high powered job.

Her texts are a fricking nightmare. She can only write as she speaks so things like there/their/they're are impossible. She also literally will type the way she speaks so things like carnt etc are very common.

Autocorrect and predictive text make things even worse as a machine has no chance of making head nor tail of what she's on about so text speak is easier for her.

She dislikes texting for these reasons so is somewhat slack with replying. The end result is that you get a reply you don't understand to a question you can't remember asking 3 days later Confused

If I ever heard anyone judge her like this I think my head would explode from the rage!

Mrsjay · 06/04/2012 13:00

oh i never hun I do like the occasional LOL and tbh i dont know what intellectual posturing means Blush

Flashing one's erudition, innit? Like the funny haiku threads. Good poncey fun.

kickmewhenimdown · 06/04/2012 13:04

YABU. What is the reasoning that they are less intelligent? Please enlighten.

TheBigJessie · 06/04/2012 13:05

But "period" means "full stop"/"."

If you put "Period." is that not a tautology?
