to find the idea of tasting breast milk a bit gross?

Am currently BF and have no desire to taste my own BM. In fact the thought of it turns my stomach. I know that it is 'magical stuff' Wink but neither do I have a desire to taste other bodily fluids which serve an important purpose!

Am I the only one that thinks its a bit, well, yuk!

Don't then. You don't have to.

Kayano · 05/04/2012 20:04

I know someone who used it in her partners tea once Confused

mendipgirl · 05/04/2012 20:05

do you like tasting a cow's breastmilk??

Iggly · 05/04/2012 20:05

No one is forcing you (are they??)

However I wouldn't equate BM with my wee, another bodily fluid.

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 05/04/2012 20:06

I know I don't have to but there are other threads about frozen expressed breast milk tasting 'soapy'. I would have no idea if my BM had 'turned'. Was just wondering if the majority do actually taste it?

I haven't bf but I can't see why your own species' milk is ick but you'll happily lap up the milk of at least one other species.

eosmum · 05/04/2012 20:06

Curiosity got the better of me Grin

Cremeeggsandkitkatsoldiers · 05/04/2012 20:08

I had no desire to taste mine, but would test it for temperature if it had been expressed and would lick off dribbles, as a child progresses to weaning I think it is a good principle to never feed you child anything that you haven't tasted at least once yourself (like baby food pouches and fruit shoots etc), and it's also the best way to check the temp

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 05/04/2012 20:09

eosmum - were you pleasantly surprised!?

Iggly - hadn't thought of wee - was thinking more about discharge or snot Blush.

Strangely I have no problem with cow's milk (!!) but would be even more grossed out at the thought of someone else's BM...

Well because they wonder why their babies won't take it from a bottle but do from the boob. Especially if they take formula.

DinahMoHum · 05/04/2012 20:09

i dont think its a gross idea at all. Its not really the same thing as other body fluids as it is an actual food.

Catsmamma · 05/04/2012 20:10

it's juice SQUEEZED from a person

Cremeeggsandkitkatsoldiers · 05/04/2012 20:11

my partner never tasted mine out of curiosity - he had no desire to when I was exclusively BFing - there was no need! the temp was fine, it couldn't be "off".. but would like me test for temp when we started giving expressed bottles.

I do think it's wierd when partners have it in their tea or on their cereal - I feel for the poor woman who pumped that milk out of themselves (because expressing is shit isn't it?) only for it to be "wasted" on a grown man who could make do with something else! I hated expressing so much that I would literally cry over spilt milk if any of it was wasted cause it meant I'ld have to express some more!

marriedinwhite · 05/04/2012 20:11

Mine was slightly sweet - not at all soapy. I once managed to squirt it, quite by accident, in DH's face. Just as he bent over to kiss me when he came in and I was getting ready to latch dd on Smile. We still laugh about it now. If he drank milk, I might have been tempted to put it in his tea Grin

Meglet · 05/04/2012 20:13

I tasted mine lots of times when I had to check the temperature of expressed milk and so did XP. It's very sweet.

PurpleRomanesco · 05/04/2012 20:13

I've always wanted some one asked why they don't mind drinking cows breast milk to respond "I don't, I drink soy milk".

FWIW, I eat beef, Doesn't mean I want some of my leg in a stew.

somewherewest · 05/04/2012 20:14

Apparently (or so I learned here on Mumsnet) breastfeeding women in Mongolia will offer their breasts round the room like a tray of canapes on social occasions. I'm kind of glad I don't live in Mongolia.

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 05/04/2012 20:14

ROFL marriedinwhite.

Couldn't agree more cremeegg about the grown man! Ewwwww!

YABU but I totally get you. Always thought it a bit ick too but I'll happily drink cows milk!! I am currently bfing and never tasted it. I am a bit curious though. My dd was also curious when I brought DTs home from hospital and when I had some expressed she wanted to try it so I let her. Not sure she liked it...she was undecided!

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 05/04/2012 20:17

somewherewest they need to export Pombears to Mongolia...!

OP posts:
LittleMissGoodEnough · 05/04/2012 20:22

You know yabu! It's less icky than cows milk fgs.

It tastes like slightly sweet water. If you're testing temp in a bottle, you'll probably lick the bit ff your wrist, as you would if it was formula (which really does taste grim!).

Lueji · 05/04/2012 20:27

I can state that I prefer breastmilk to cow's milk.

I don't like cow's milk. It makes me a bit sick if I drink it without flavour.

But I was able to drink about 100ml of breastmilk once when I spent an overnight away from DS at 2 months.
I couldn't freeze it or anything, so I just thought why would I let that good food go to waste? Blush

Never found the need to repeat the experience, though.

sweetkitty · 05/04/2012 20:27

I've tasted it, got to when it's EBM defrosted to see if it's still ok. It's tastes like full fat cows milk with sugar added its very sweet.

I've also tasted formula, it's horrid (not a get at FFers just personal taste.

Love it that people in general find BM revolting but happily drink milk from
a big animal that eats grass and licks it own bum Grin

Lueji · 05/04/2012 20:30

Sweetkitty, are you drinking cat's milk? Shock

NagooBunnytail · 05/04/2012 20:32

It's very sweet and a bit metallic. Well, mine is.

I didn't love it. No desire to stockpile and use it on my Special K.

Formula was horrible by comparison.

I don't think I would want to taste someone else's. Not now it has been described as 'person juice' anyway Grin
