to find the idea of tasting breast milk a bit gross?

Am currently BF and have no desire to taste my own BM. In fact the thought of it turns my stomach. I know that it is 'magical stuff' Wink but neither do I have a desire to taste other bodily fluids which serve an important purpose!

Am I the only one that thinks its a bit, well, yuk!

I can't see it would matter if cows did lick their own bums. I mean, the milk's not coming out of their mouths.

I thought breastmilk was quite nice when I tasted my own (a bit like very weak sweet horlicks) but absolutely loathe cows milk (because it tastes horrible, not squeamishness).

FrillyMilly · 05/04/2012 22:07

I've tasted it, DH has tasted it and DD (who is 3.5 and not breastfed) has tasted it. None of us liked it. DS (2 months) seems quite happy though. It's very sweet and I don't like sweet drinks.

Pascha · 05/04/2012 22:11

I hope I never have to taste my own breastmilk and I say that while happily feeding my 19 month old boy. Its sticky and people say sweet and the thought makes me shudder and for that reason I will not ever be trying it.

Belmo · 05/04/2012 22:28

Tasted mine out of curiosity. Not a fan but then I don't like any milk.
Spilt some expressed milk the other day and the cat licked it up - for some reason that really grossed me out!

PatFenis · 05/04/2012 22:43

I tasted my daughters breast milk last week - if its good enough for my grandson to drink it can't be all bad!

My DH used to get covered in my breast milk when we had sex - when I orgasmed by boobs would spray everywhere ....it was my private party trick Grin

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 22:53

yes, I like to think I wouldn't let me DC eat anythign I wouldn't eat. Mind that doesn't go as far as eating squashed raisins from the corners of the kitchen floor :o

"Mind that doesn't go as far as eating squashed raisins from the corners of the kitchen floor"

but we don't have raisins, I though the were chocolate drop Shock

FannyFifer · 05/04/2012 23:01

Mines reminded me of rice milk.Grin

I have unearthed some 4 month old breastmilk hidden in the freezer, DD stopped BF about then.. can I use it in her breakfast? I know it'll have deteriorated and wouldn't give it to a newborn, but she's totally weened. Does it have any health benefits now?

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 23:04

I think so, and after 4 months it'll prob be fine but tbh I recdently threw out a load of old bm, but it was much older than that.
Still...sob

crustyonion · 05/04/2012 23:17

I will pop it on her weetabix anyway. Thanks stealth

I found my boobs to be quite squirty on a morning, especially when a DC had skipped a night feed. Did no one else squirt a shower of breastmilk over their DP to encourage them out of bed and make some bloody tea?

It worked. Every. Time.

KnockedUpMell · 05/04/2012 23:26

Yanbu. I've bf for over a year now and still can't myself to taste the stuff. If we were meant to drink our own breast milk, breasts wouldn't be where they are!! I dont drink cows milk either btw but do find it more acceptable to drink cows milk. Think that's because it's the cultural norm.

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 23:27

i can...

FutureNannyOgg · 05/04/2012 23:41

I have been known to finish off a cup of expressed milk when DS left it, I considered it recycling Grin
It tastes like melted ice cream, not the flavoured kind, just plain but sweet, nicer than cow's milk.

misslinnet · 06/04/2012 00:01

Breastmilk's not yuk at all - it's the only bodily fluid designed to be drunk after all.

I've tasted both my breastmilk and formula, and the breastmilk tastes much nicer. And sweeter.

DH won't taste it though. When he gives DS bottles of expressed milk, he wipes the milk he's used to test for temperature off on his clothes.

CatPussWithACrownOfThorns · 06/04/2012 00:30

Fresh from the cow milk is mank! Full of all manner of crud! At least breasts milk is clean! Confused

Heswall · 06/04/2012 00:33

I put it in my brothers tea once when he was being a twat about breast feeding
i didn't really but wanted to

tb · 06/04/2012 00:33

oldmum the cows round here can lick their bums - they're Limousin ones, maybe they're especially flexible.

Goolash · 06/04/2012 01:03

Yanbu

I bf my first for nearly 2 years, the next one ditched me at nearly a year. In theory I have nothing against drinking breast milk, its just milk from a human. Still I've never wanted to try.

Maybe it doesn't help that I'm not a big milk fan. At work we only have semi skimmed, even then I can only cope with one coffee a day made with that. More and i start to feel a bit sick, at home we have skimmed. The idea of extra sweet milk makes me feel quite ill. Years of that sweet, slightly stale, smell on my breast pads? Ughhh.

I have tasted my own breast milk and it wasn't to my taste, it needed some serious mustard, mature cheddar and black pepper. It could make a decent cheese sauce, with the right seasoning. Still I couldnt have too much of it ;)

Yes, it's only milk. Yes, it is odder to drink milk from a cow.

If you don't want to drink your own? Don't [ grin]

G1nger · 06/04/2012 15:21

Am I the only one whose milk tastes like cheese (on a gulp, not sip)?

Methe · 06/04/2012 15:27

I find it odder that someone wouldn't try it than would tbh!

GavisconJunkie · 06/04/2012 16:15

I used breast shells first time round. It was easier to drink it than have it spill everywhere. I quite liked it & dh dipped his finger.

I was however freaked out when I caught the cats lapping at one...
