to find the idea of tasting breast milk a bit gross?

Am currently BF and have no desire to taste my own BM. In fact the thought of it turns my stomach. I know that it is 'magical stuff' Wink but neither do I have a desire to taste other bodily fluids which serve an important purpose!

Am I the only one that thinks its a bit, well, yuk!

See, if I am heating a bottle and I test it on my wrist, I either wipe it on my clothes Blush or on the muslin which is mostly permanantly positioned over my shoulder!

Thanks for the descriptions of BM...almost tempted to try it...only almost, though!

I once made coffee but had no cows milk so used some left over BM, ok but it didn't whiten the coffee as much as cows milk Grin

G1nger · 05/04/2012 20:36

I love trying new milks. I didn't like it. Bok!

HellonHeels · 05/04/2012 20:36

Do cows really lick their bums?

BlastOff · 05/04/2012 20:37

I've tasted my breast milk and it was just very sweet, but the idea of formula - yuck! (and have given my dc both so no ff issues, but it's got fish in it and well, just yuck)

FatherHankTree · 05/04/2012 20:39

I accidentally tasted some when DD projectile vomited at me. It's like very, very sweet milky porridge.

goodnightmoon · 05/04/2012 20:41

I've never tasted it and have no desire, but I also prefer soya or almond milk to cow. Formula seems a both minging though, just from the smell, but I am still mix feeding.

ragged · 05/04/2012 20:45

Have you ever kissed with tongues? That's tasting someone else's saliva.
And as for their other bodily fluids...

At least breast milk was meant to be tasted; if it's not good enough for me it's not good enough for baby, eh?

Mine is definitely runny, not at all like full-fat milk.
Agree that formula smells odd.

poolet · 05/04/2012 20:46

I was surprised how sweet mine tasted.

My friend used to keep and drink the milk that she leaked from the other breast when she fed her baby - she didn't want it to go to waste.

sweetkitty · 05/04/2012 20:48

Ragged - totally agree with the saliva argument, and the other body fluids Grin

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 05/04/2012 20:50

Ah but it depends if you are a spitter or a swallower (or general abstainer)...

What I find 'gross' is likening breast milk to discharge or snot - BM is made to be drunk, the other two are not!

SamBrick · 05/04/2012 21:04

YY Cruci

When DS was under the weather I'd sometimes stick some in a smoothie for him - he was 5 at the time - I haven't told him as I don't want to have to pay for a lifetime of therapy

SneakyBiscuitEater · 05/04/2012 21:07

I make DD2 breastmilk rice pudding, it only needs BM and pudding rice, no sugar, as it is sweet enough. DH says it is very creamy and tastes like the milk in the bottom of your cereal bowl and I think that's as good a description as any I've heard.

DD2 goes MENTAL over breastmilk custard. I have also tried and failed to make yogurt.

fussbucket · 05/04/2012 21:12

Agree, it was very sweet compared to cow's milk. (I'd expressed shedloads and ddtwins had guzzled most of it then passed out, so I decided to satisfy my curiosity).
Drank some formula a couple of months later when we'd started replacing the bedtime feed - mostly so DP could take part - and thought it wasn't very nice at all! However ddtwins seemed happy and healthy enough.

lagartija · 05/04/2012 21:13

Mine tastes very sweet but almost sort of nutty somehow too.

Birdsgottafly · 05/04/2012 21:14

I found mine a bit bland and tbh, i don't see how your partner could avoid tasting it, if you bf for at least a few months, mine spurted out everywhere when i was having sex.

Mind you, tmi, but how do you avoid tasting other bodily fluids, unless you have sex wearing a surgical (or other) mask?

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 05/04/2012 21:17

i never had any inclination to taste mine
DH did though, and found it very sweet, but watery (oversupply ishoos methinks)
it can't be worse than the formula i fed them - that was bleurgh

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 21:19

I've tasted mine. I find it odd that people will feel yucky about having something they will happily feed to their child though.

laughlovelife · 05/04/2012 21:21

"I haven't bf but I can't see why your own species' milk is ick but you'll happily lap up the milk of at least one other species."

"Love it that people in general find BM revolting but happily drink milk from
a big animal that eats grass and licks it own bum"

I dont get this analogy, I really dont, I dont eat human meat, so why would I human milk as a adult, I do eat cows meat, so see no problem drinking cows milk, and eating cheese etc... all made from cows milk etc... so if we put the same analogy to human milk, to BM, it all becomes a social norm, which needs to be changed.

startail · 05/04/2012 21:30

I never got the hang of expressing so I've only ever tasted a fingerfull and yes it is sweet.

Perennially BFing DD2 still, aged 11, will not drink water or plain cows milk. Drinks have to be sweet.

I wanted DH to try some, but he was just as expert at kissing my nipples without getting milk as DD2 was at feeding. He's not squeamish he just absolutely hates milk. He still remembers the hell of being forced to drink warm milk at school.

DreamsInBinary · 05/04/2012 21:33

Sweet and thin. Odd you will feed your children something you have never tasted.

Iambaboon · 05/04/2012 21:36

My DP believes it's the elixir of eternal life. I had to pump and dump a few weeks ago after taking migraine medication

He drank it all Shock I thought he was joking but no

oldmum42 · 05/04/2012 21:58

Sweetkitty........ can I just assure you, cows CAN'T lick their own bums! No need to worry about that :)

Lueji · 05/04/2012 21:58

He's not squeamish he just absolutely hates milk. He still remembers the hell of being forced to drink warm milk at school.

It's quite different.
He could try it, but then there's the danger that he could become addicted. Wink :o
