Myself and DP went to do our weekly shop last night in the local supermarket.
We had both been to work then I went to the gym, he went running. By the time we finished it was getting quite late so decided to just go in our tracksuits then shower and change when we get back home.
We regularly shop in this supermarket so never gave it a moments thought until last night.
From the moment we walked in the security guard looked at us and got straight on his radio, then the whole time we were in there the staff seemed to be milling around us. Got to the checkout and the lady who served us didn't even speak until she wanted payment.
Then we went to the customer service desk (they had an offer on if you spend over a certain amount you can get disney cards for the little ones) only to be ignored! The lady actually looked at us then carried on talking to her mate!
By this time I was frothing at the mouth!

Did they think we were chav's intending to steal something just because we were wearing tracksuits???

Agree, usual, but wouldn't you rather be accused of being a snob that a crim?

I was having this same conversation with DS1, 10.5, this morning. All about self awareness and public perception.

Sad that I felt I had to speak to him about it so young, but wanted to prepare him for high school and the big wide world.

Because I don't agree and am giving ther examples? Ok

Maybe you shouldn't have posted in AIBU with that thread title if you are not going to like the responses that don't match your expectations.

scottishmummy · 04/04/2012 10:27

you're being obtuse and huffy about answers no likey
someone asked whats a Ned
well Ned=tracky, oh and white sport socks

as I said you looked rough in tesco, staff thought you were neds

IAmBooyhoo · 04/04/2012 10:33

nickname regardless of how much pressure someone is under to wear a certain style of clothing, it is still a choice, and the clothes still say something (even if not accurate) about the person who is in them. skin colour is not a choice and cannot possibly tell anyone that the person in the skin shops in b&m or harrods.

JustGiveMeTheWine · 04/04/2012 10:34

Really Kayano? Because I posted in AIBU I should be drawn into silly conversations with grown women?

Scottishmummy I don't think I looked that rough and I wasn't wearing white sports socks although a Ned is a new word to me!

StrandedBear I didn't actually think of that! Now im definitely paranoid!

No but in AIBU it's poor form to ask posters opinions then dismiss their points of view because they do not agree with you and they even give further examples

Silly conversations with grown women? You started the thread and I responded honestly and openly with examples

So to just dismiss me and not respond just because our viewpoints do not match is very bad form. very juvenile sticking fingers in your ears lalalalala

ThisIsANickname · 04/04/2012 10:43

IAmBooyhoo I recommend reading up on determinism.

Hownoobrooncoo · 04/04/2012 10:51

Strange, I do most of my grocery shopping in sweat pants and trainers, no makeup, hair scraped in a ponytail (also have a roughish sounding accent) and never have a problem. Will try and pay more attention next time, maybe I'm missing something. Wonder if they judge you on what you're buying then. It you're spending a lot, premium brands etc some luxury items.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 04/04/2012 10:51

I think people place far too much emphasis on how people/themselves look. I am guilty as the next person. I judge the people two doors down for various reasons and especially what they wear (sterotypical chav clothing), . When they come out looking out "smart" I always half joking will say to be DP off to court are they.

wful I know, but we all have our own sterotypes of people, they are not always correct but it is human nature to make judgements about people based on what we see visually because we often do not take the time to get to know people.

My DP overheard the forementioned family pass judgement on us the other day. The woman who we assume is the mother of the family said to somebody, there they go again in their nice clothes and the Volvo how very Middle England. My DP came in at once to report this to me, I pointed out that we do the same to them all the time.

Xx

JustGiveMeTheWine · 04/04/2012 10:54

TBH Kayano your examples are ridiculous, other people have posted their opinions which is what this forum is all about.

You seem like your a 'Im right and your not' person and it's rather boring!

Please feel free to post your views elsewhere!

I agree with what was said way back. When I go to the gym I look like I have been working out, red faced, hair tied back, no make up, proper work out clothes as opposed to designer "chav" tracksuit wear. Nobody ever seems to openly make judgements, they probably think there she goes again!

Agincourt · 04/04/2012 10:58

I work in food retail and I don't judge anyone by their clothes as it would
(a) take too long
(b) take even longer to work out who wasm what you call, a chav Hmm
(c) I don't necessarily think chavs steal things automatically
(d) I don't really judge people anyway
(e) some people don't even wash their clothes, are they going to steal too?
(f) some people smell heavily of alcohol, are they more likely to steal?
(g) we don't have a security guard
(h) we don't have disney cards either
(i) I am usually too busy working to be bothered about judging people in ill fitting sportswear
(j) sometimes I am tired
(k) I am ssometimes tired
(l) I usually have 101 things to do all at the same time to have any time to judge those in luxe sportswear
(m) I am not sure I can finish this alphabet reasoning as I need the toilet

IAmBooyhoo · 04/04/2012 10:59

did you mean that to sound patronising nickname?

IAmBooyhoo · 04/04/2012 11:01

How are they ridiculous? You've not actually entered into a discussion about it other than;

'I wasn't going to an interview'

Which we knew anyway. It was a legitimate point to make, and actually I was not the only one to make that particular point/ example.

I'm not always 'I'm right and your wrong'
I've changed my way of thinking a lot being on MN

However people do get judged on appearance. People (including yourself 'I wasnt dressed like a chav / oh no he thinks I am a chav) do judge and have been judged at some point in their lives due to their clothes.

I don't see how what I have posted is ridiculous or a silly conversation. Dismiss me if you want, I have no issue with you living is a fantasy land where this doesn't happen

IAmBooyhoo Not at all. Sorry if that is how I came across.

JustGiveMeTheWine · 04/04/2012 11:09

Maybe it's crossed wires then Kayano

We'll have to agree to disagree, meanwhile during this discussion I have been trying to decide what to wear to the hairdressers. Definitely not a tracksuit!

When I was 18 I was staying at my friends a few hours drive from where I lived, when my wisdom teeth decided to start giving me hell in the morning, I was in a lot of pain and my friend was sleeping so I grabbed their running tracksuit an put it on quickly then went to the shop to get some painkillers. The lady in the shop was quite off with me and refused to sell me Nurofen without ID proving I was over 16 despite me practically begging because I was in so much pain. A few weeks later I visited my friend again (with no toothache this time Grin) wearing jeans and a top and was served alcohol by the same lady without any problem Hmm

bejeezus · 04/04/2012 11:10

Do you really care?
you didnt steal anything/you werent arrested
it might just have been your perception, it might not have been
people are rude all the time
hth

TheSockPuppet · 04/04/2012 11:15

bejeezus was that aimed at me?

KisMittz · 04/04/2012 11:16

We all judge on appearance, I see a politician in a suit and I automatically see a dishonest, lying, cheating individual. Regardless of gender or race.
