to feel angry about this quote I've been given for my DDs party?

PostBellumBugsy · 27/03/2012 13:56

Am organising a party for my DD. I am arranging for it to be a chocolate egg/bunny/chick decorating party - as her birthday is very close to Easter. Have found a supplier of the chocolate items. It is a couple and their business is novelty chocolate items & they also do all kinds of chocolate making / decorating parties.
I asked them to supply enough eggs for the party & we discussed icing bags & cellophane bags & decorative items too.
They've sent through the quote. The quote for the chocolate items, whilst on the high side is not unreasonable. The quote for all the other items, is absolutely outrageous.
I presume it is not unreasonable for me to say I'll just stick with the chocolate & forgo the other items. I feel a bit angry, because the charges are so high, it feels like they are trying to rip me off.

How much?

muffinflop · 27/03/2012 14:04

'Have found a supplier'...what's wrong with the supermarket? Surely you can get what you want in a supermarket can't you?

WibblyBibble · 27/03/2012 14:06

Er, isn't the point of getting a quote that you can look at it and think 'this is a ridiculous price' and then look elsewhere for a sensibly priced option? I don't think it's reasonable to be angry at this stage.

ABatInBunkFive · 27/03/2012 14:07

YABabitU to be Angry about a quote, no one is forcing you to pay it.

PostBellumBugsy · 27/03/2012 14:08

£15 for 40 cellophane bags (Lakeland sell 50 for £2.99)

£40 for 20 filled icing bags (again Lakeland sell 50 disposable icing bags for £6.19 and I'm guessing a couple of boxes of icing sugar)

£40 for decorative items (to include mini-smarties, skittles, icing letters, mini marshmallows & hundreds & thousands)

Can't you just buy all the decorative stuff off ebay and hit the supermarkets for egg multi buy offers? How many are coming and what was the quote?

Kbear · 27/03/2012 14:09

Get cheap eggs (£1 each at the moment in most supermarkets), unwrap and decorate with icing tubes and flowers you can stick on etc, all available at Sainsburys, Asda, Morrisons. Don't be ripped off, just shop around a bit and you can easily buy enough decorating stuff plus eggs for less than £25, basing that on about 10 children. Easily.

(Can I come? sounds like a fab party!!).

Winkly · 27/03/2012 14:09

Ah, x-posted.

Don't be angry just hit Lakeland.

[loves Lakeland emoticon]

CupcakesAndBunting · 27/03/2012 14:10

Well of course they are going to put a mark-up on what retailers sell them for. They aren't just going to sell them at what Lakeland sell them for. Do it yorself. No way would I pay that much for bloddy cellophane bags. In fact, all of that stuff you can get for buttons from Home Bargains.

They saw you coming, I think.

moogalicious · 27/03/2012 14:10

Buy the stuff at Lakeland then?

Floggingmolly · 27/03/2012 14:13

Yes, they are taking the piss, but why would you source a supplier for what is essentially sweets and plastic bags in the first place? Confused It's not exactly speciality stuff, is it?

bigbuttons · 27/03/2012 14:14

Do it yourself, simple. I always do and I have thousands of children, well six actually but I would never give my hard earned to these rip off merchants.
easter eggs are a £1 each in asda atm, that's what my no 6's party friends are getting. He'll be 5 on easter Sunday. It's more than enough
Your dd would much rather you spent the money you will save doing something nice with HER over the easter holidays. Think of it that way.
Spend that money on your dd not on the chocolate thieves.

PostBellumBugsy · 27/03/2012 14:15

Cupcakes, I was expecting a mark up - but I was expecting a mark up on wholesale prices. That is what has annoyed me - it is as though they think I am stupid.
They are a local business and I really like to support local if I can. However, I'm so annoyed, I think I may just source all the chocolate stuff myself, as well as the bags & decorative items.

Snakeonaplane · 27/03/2012 14:16

I'd just buy cheap eggs and unwrap them and then gather the bits yourself, wouldn't be angry that's the purpose of a quote. I'd be angry if I booked them assuming it would be reasonable and then they sent me a bill for that lot.

duckdodgers · 27/03/2012 14:17

But if you know you can get this stuff cheaper at Lakeland - why didnt you just use them int he first place? Confused

And as everyone says for the eggs they are really cheap in Asda etc just now.

pictish · 27/03/2012 14:17

Tell them to do one.
Politely.

You can do it much cheaper than that!

QuintessentialShadows · 27/03/2012 14:17
Confused

eh?

Can you not order all these items yourselves?

Surely they must think that as you are unable to do this, you must be made out of money?

Why not do an easier option of making a cupcake decorating party? Decorate your own cupcakes and EAT! Much cheaper and easier to manage yourself.

Then you can have an egg hunt also.

CupcakesAndBunting · 27/03/2012 14:19

I mean this in the nicest way possible, honestly, but I think you might be being a bit stupid if you are willing to pay someone to get this stuff for you. I can understand forking out to pay someone to make a cake or something else that might be stretching your capabilities a bit, but you're wanting to pay someone to drive around and get stuff that you can get.

Just say thanks but no thanks and do it yourself. :)

knowitallstrikesagain · 27/03/2012 14:19

However, I'm so annoyed, I think I may just source all the chocolate stuff myself, as well as the bags & decorative items.

Precious, rare, valuable items you source

Chocolate and plastic bags you buy

choceyes · 27/03/2012 14:20

YABU to be annoyed, when you dont' HAVE to pay up and there are other options available to you.

PostBellumBugsy · 27/03/2012 14:21

duck, I didn't know I could get it cheaper in Lakeland! When the quote came through, I was gob smacked, so started doing my own research.

Groan, I can see you all think I am frivolous & stupid now.

Quint - I did decorating cup cakes three years ago & it was great. Hence the thought to decorate something else.

OP posts:
Snakeonaplane · 27/03/2012 14:22

Where do you live? Perhaps it's an area where people pay these prices, my friend pays someone 1k to decorate her x mas tree because it's the done thing Hmm where they live and clearly people pay it, insanity at it's finest me thinks.

MargueritaaPracatan · 27/03/2012 14:23

Why annoyed? Should think they'll be making a special trip to buy your stuff, using their petrol, paying themselves & any staff, They're not doing you a favour, they're in it to make money and save you the bother.

But I think you're probs getting the drift by now, eh!

EasyOnTheChips · 27/03/2012 14:23

I'm so confused.

PostBellumBugsy · 27/03/2012 14:24

Oh dear lord & now my use of English is being criticised! Grin

Thank you all. Have realised the folly of my ways. Will be purchasing (hope that is ok with you knowitall) all the items myself!!!!!!
