I seem to remember everlong sharing stories of thick dogs with you on a thread about how dogs should all be perfectly trained. Past owner of very thick, but cute dog. Hated coming back when called to be put on the lead. But it took a year for dog to realise that being called back at a particular point on the walk meant that it was time to go on the lead.

edam · 25/03/2012 12:43

Lesley, being trained to do useful things is not a sign of intelligence. It is a sign of obedience. Cat's just don't think it is their role in life to do a human's bidding.

To be fair, I've not seen any sign that ds's cat, our current model, would gain entry to Mensa should he wish. Although having the humans perfectly trained to do what he wants, including repeatedly opening doors for him, then opening them again when he changes his mind, is probably a sign that he's cleverer than us. Grin

But previous cats of my acquaintance have been jolly clever. Including my childhood cats, one of whom trained the dog to do her bidding (mostly stealing food but also taught him sit when she wanted something warm and cosy and furry to curl up on). That was impressive, especially as he treated anything humans said as a mere suggestion that he would comply with if he felt like it. Grin

PosiePumblechook · 25/03/2012 12:48

Cats just come and shit all over my garden, wankers.

seeker · 25/03/2012 12:49

Being trainable is not a sign of intelligence. Robots are trainable.

lesley33 · 25/03/2012 12:52

Training a robot is very difficult and only the most intelligent are trainable. The most intelligent robots are more intelligent than cats.

And Edam, impressive though your examples are, not quite in the same league as leading blind people over many miles and a large variety of obstacles and public transport.

pfb!

Codandchops · 25/03/2012 12:54

My cat is fabulous so.....ner! Grin

lesley33 · 25/03/2012 12:55

I'm sure YOUR cat is a genius cod.

edam · 25/03/2012 12:55

Leading blind people stems from obedience to human commands - impressive for a dog but not in the same league as cats, who think humans should obey their commands.

Did you hear about the really shit guide dog, btw, who killed four owners by leading them into traffic? Think it was in Germany - it was mentioned on QI. You do have to wonder why the German equivalent of the RNIB kept giving him to new owners...

LucyManga · 25/03/2012 12:56

I love cats. I would love one, but DS and Dh are allergic to them.

Dogs are shit. They smell and are dim.

Wink
lesley33 · 25/03/2012 12:57

No didn't hear about that guide god. Thats terrible. You would think after the second time they would thing well....maybe retire this one.

lesley33 · 25/03/2012 13:00

Or even dog!

AngryFeet · 25/03/2012 13:01

I hate all animals. Annoying, smelly, hairy little things. I hate cats more than dogs though. Whenever I go to a house where a cat is they follow me around and sit on my lap. They can sense my hatred and are mocking me as they know I am not rude enough to kick them in the head like I want to.

Lueji · 25/03/2012 13:12

I sustain that cat people like the challenge of being able to control their pets. Wink

Cats rarely need baths, no walks outside, don't stink like dogs, are less noisy.
I don't like the scratching, but mine compensates by loving to be stroked and sleeping by us on the couch. But we rarely see him.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 25/03/2012 13:41

YADDDNBU. Ive had many pets. But NO cat will EVER pass my threshold!

bettybat · 25/03/2012 14:11

It's staggeringly arrogant of us humans to assume all animals are there to be trained and used by us and to entertain us.

How about just, you know, enjoying animals for being animals?

lesley33 · 25/03/2012 14:17

Cat owners are just too lazy to be dog owners imo.

betty - we are just pissing around you know?

bettybat · 25/03/2012 14:21

lesley33 oh yes I know, and was enjoying it mostly :)

But then was also reading about how Kim Kardashian was flour bombed by a woman who called her a fur hag. And all KK's fans were all "we love you KK,' and KK called the flour woman a bully and I realise that KK is fur-wearing selfish bitch of the highest order who doesn't give a shit about the extreme pain her choices inflict on animals....

And I have pregnancy hormones coursing through me and I just felt suddenly so sad for all the animals in the world

The ancient Egyptians invented, among other things, modern medicine, astronomy, mathematics, pen and paper, artificial irrigation, hydraulic engineering, navigation, triangulation and lighthouses. They built structures that lasted for thousands of years and even now people can't work out quite how they did it. And they worshipped cats. That should tell you something.

ScatterChasse · 25/03/2012 14:53

Pussy as a word for cat came from the Egyptian word 'pasch' for the cat goddess I think.

edam · 25/03/2012 17:24

I thought the cat goddess was called Bastet?

MyCatIsAStupidBastard · 25/03/2012 19:14

My cat may indeed be a stupid as they come (used to be a right bastard, but a heart condition appears to have rendered him dense), but he is not shit.
