So if you don't answer the phone, do you answer the door?

I don't always answer the phone when it rings. I have had comments from (old) people about this, asking how I can be uncontactable when I have a mobile. But I go one step further...

Sometimes I don't answer the door!!!!

I am often in my living room meaning I have full view of who is at the door and if it is someone I don't recognise, mostly I ignore it. This really infuriates people, normally door to door sales or charity collecters, who can see me looking at them. They make 'open the door gestures', ring again, probably wondering if I am deaf or have phobias, then leave cross and bemused. I have been told this is mean and I should answer the door to them. But I don't want to.

I always answer the door.
Not always the phone.

NakedButNotFamous · 21/03/2012 13:47

I only answer the door if I know it's a delivery. My DH answers the door to everybody. That annoys me.

diddl · 21/03/2012 13:50

I only answer the door & phone if I want to.

That said, our phone shows who is calling & I can see who is at the door without them seeing me.

CroissantNeuf · 21/03/2012 13:50

If I had been spotted in the house then I would always answer the door.

However if I've seen them and they've not seen me (and its someone I don't want to answer it to eg. Jehovah's Witnesses, canvassing politicians) then I don't answer.

Our phone has caller ID so I frequently don't bother answering if its a number I don't recognise .

knowitallstrikesagain · 21/03/2012 13:50

Good point. I never ignore anyone with a big package

i don't have a doorbell....if it is someone i know the door is unlocked so they just come on in..

bit of a prob when i have a parcel cos sometimes i don't hear them (double doors at front)

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 21/03/2012 13:58

I dont always answer the phone (also got caller ID) but usually answer the door - unless I have spotted canvassers or JW in area.

insanityscratching · 21/03/2012 13:58

I don't answer the landline as they are generally marketing calls. Anyone who needs to speak to me urgently would call my mobile. I check the peephole before answering the door so as to avoid JW's, charity callers and canvassers.

Pearla · 21/03/2012 14:10

The irony of reading this thread as I get up to answer the door to a nice old lady who wanted to talk to me about Christ's death. Hmm

deliciousdevilwoman · 21/03/2012 14:41

No-I really take umbrage at unsolicited callers....whether door to door sales people or MIL!

I don't care if they "know" I am in. I don't answer. My home is my haven, and if I wanted to see you, I'd bloody invite you.

Chattymummyhere · 21/03/2012 16:52

Nope if I dont know you and your not the postman/women you can stare at me all you want though the window I anit answering. I will protend to be on the phone/feeding a child to get out of it

JustHecate · 21/03/2012 17:08

Only if I want to.

They have to walk past my window to get to my door, so I already know if it's someone I want to open the door to.

KatieScarlett2833 · 21/03/2012 17:11

No, unless it is the Amazon delivery, then I run to the door.....

Dillydollydaydream · 21/03/2012 17:13

I tend to spot people walking past before they knock. If its someone in a fluorescent vest with a clipboard I tend to ignore the door because there is really no point as I don't sign up to charities that come knocking. I'd only be wasting their time and my own if I opened the door to them.

ImOnABreak · 21/03/2012 17:14

I am quite antisocial I think, I hate having to talk to people I don't know even though I have a job that has this as a big part of it. I also force myself to go to toddlers and playgroups and talk drivel at the school gates, so if someone I don't know knocks at my door I do tend to ignore as I can't face it!

Firawla · 21/03/2012 17:15

i always answer the door, if its a salesman of some kind it doesnt take long to tell them sorry not interested.
if i didnt answer ill get questions for the next half hour off my 3 yr old 'why didnt u answer what if its the postman bringing me a present' etc

runninggal · 21/03/2012 18:04

I dont mind answering the door when I can see its someone I dont know. I can send them packing easily enough. I'm more likely to not answer the door when I know who it is!

Mostly dont answer the phone either!

IAmBooyhoo · 21/03/2012 18:07

my dcs always shout "mum there's someone at the door" every.single.time so i dont get to ignore it.

abigboydidit · 21/03/2012 19:15

I always answer the door as I'm really nosey

Sparklingbrook · 21/03/2012 19:21

I have my trusty 'No Sales people, canvassers" sign so I do answer the door. It's either a neighbour, or the postman usually.

I hardly ever answer the landline phone. Caller Display is great. Smile

CremeEggThief · 21/03/2012 19:24

No, I only answer the 'phone or the door when I feel like it, or I can see or know it's someone worth opening it to, e.g. postie or someone I know.
A couple of Sundays ago, I made DS hang up the landline he answered, because I was still in bed at midday and I couldn't be bothered to get up, walk down 2 flights of stairs and speak to the caller about renewing my washing machine insurance (yawn).

BsshBossh · 21/03/2012 19:26

I tend to answer the door to canvassers (sales, religious etc) if it's convenient (ie I'm in but not working or in the loo!) but only because they always come back on the same day usually when DD is in bed. But I open door, smie, say a swift "No thanks, don't call again, have a nice day" then close the door. This tends to deter repeat callers.

BsshBossh · 21/03/2012 19:28

I can see out my window so I can tell if the caller is friend, postie or canvasser.

FizzyLaces · 21/03/2012 19:37

I always answer the phone unless it is my inlaws and my partner is working late. I also answer the door. I like people coming to see me Smile

Stratters · 21/03/2012 19:47

I have Caller Display.

I have a spy hole in my door, and I can see who is coming up my drive if I am in the sitting room.

I only answer if I want to. Grin
