To feel like telling my friend that her dog does indeed smell?

I have a friend who is always going on very smugly about how lucky she is that her dog doesn't smell like other peoples' do. In fact her house has a very distinct "doggy" smell about it and if you stroke her dog (lovely as he is) your hand smells of dog.

She says that when he goes she'll neer replace him because she doubts she'd be as lucky to get another one like him that doesn't smell.

I know I won't tell her really but it makes me feel better having said it here.

oh leave it. I had an uncle who spent the whole time winging that our house smelt of dog as he didn't like it. Of course it smelt of dog, but imo not in a bad way as it was not a 'smally' dog, it just smelt like ....a dog!

Just made him seem bitter.

CailinDana · 20/03/2012 20:35

Ha I clearly have no tact because the first time she mentioned this I would have laughed and said "WTF!! He bloody STINKS!"

CailinDana · 20/03/2012 20:35

BTW I loathe dogs.

All dogs smell, and all houses with dogs smell doggyish.

But when it's your house you stop smelling it IYSWIM. A bit like you can't smell your own perfume.

I might be tempted to pat the dog then have a sniff of my hands and say "phew, doggy smells a bit today doesn't he?" just to point out you can smell him. Or is that mean?

FWIW I have dogs, they smell, my house smells of dog. It's a fact of life and it doesn't bother me at all.

SparkyMcSparrow · 20/03/2012 20:38

Of course she can't smell it, its her dog.

Its like people being unable to smell their own horrendous B.O!

I would have said the same as Cailin , but I like dogs! Grin

We have 2 cats and I accept 100% that this means our house smells of cats. I would have told her that she is deluded.

Altho my ILs' house doesn't smell of dog and they have a dog... Must be down to obsessive bathing of their 'orrible dog... ? Hmm

toboldlygo · 20/03/2012 20:49

Some dogs smell worse than others. My northern breed dogs don't smell much at all - and I'm not just saying that, I've visited a lot of people who keep the same breed and their house does not smell 'doggy', just a distinctive sort of warm fur smell. Waterproof working type dogs have that grease in their coats and they can STINK.

Diet also has an effect. Raw fed dogs smell less than dogs fed on the crappier kibbles. They also tend to have less tartar and gum disease and thus not that distressing infected saliva smell that many older dogs have.

They do all stink a bit though. I don't care, I love their smell. I have been known to grab a paw to sniff their pads, it's delicious. Blush

Perriwinkle · 20/03/2012 20:50

I wouldn't mind but she is sooooo disparaging about how other peoples' dogs smell - she says it with a real nastiness like "eeewwww their dog absolutely bloody stinks" with a real emphasis on the "stinks" and then goes on all smugly about how her doesn't smell a bit.

I don't think I will ever tell her that her dog (and her house) smells doggy because I've known the dog since she got him as a puppy and it would seem odd that I hadn't said it before now but next time she's going on about it I think I will say that people with dogs can't recognise the smell themselves.

I don't mind the smell myself, and I love dogs but it's just the way she's so disparaging about other peoples' dogs and so deluded herself that gets my goat.

I love dogs

they all stink, though

SpringHeeledJack · 20/03/2012 20:52

...except for mine

Ilovedaintynuts · 20/03/2012 20:52

Oh tell her. You'll feel so much better and she'll stop acting so smug.

FilterCoffee · 20/03/2012 22:23

I'd comment that no-one can smell their own dog but of course everyone else can. If she says "can you smell this dog?" then say yes!

Aniseeda · 20/03/2012 22:24

A relative of mine thinks her dog does not fart...

It does Grin

Goawaybob · 20/03/2012 22:27

your friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

She's quite mad

MrsHuxtable · 21/03/2012 07:10

But cats don't smell the way dogs do! Or do they?????

Sparklingbrook · 21/03/2012 07:15

Cats smell lovely. Grin

People I know say their dogs don't smell, but their house reeks of dog. Confused

IsabelleRinging · 21/03/2012 07:19

I can never smell cats. Do they smell much? (other than the litter tray)

Sparklingbrook · 21/03/2012 08:45

No, cats don't smell. You know people like new baby smell-well i like to stick my nose in Sparkling Cat's fur-she smells nice. Grin

If cats wee or spray in the house that will smell but they tend not to unless stressed or poorly.

MrsKittyFane · 21/03/2012 09:22

Both cats and dogs smell. :( just as smokers can't smell their smoky clothes cat and dog owners don't realise they carry the smell around with them and it lingers in their homes too :( :(

Sparklingbrook · 21/03/2012 09:24

Oh no Kitty. Does my house reek of cat and I can't smell it? Sad

MrsKittyFane · 21/03/2012 09:26

:D sparkling probably possibly !!

Sparklingbrook · 21/03/2012 09:29

Yikes. Will drag a neighbour who has never been in for a sniff.

MrsKittyFane · 21/03/2012 09:30

Another example: the person who has eaten garlic or curry the night before and doesn't realise they are stinking of it the next day!
or the person with B.O....
