To feel like telling my friend that her dog does indeed smell?

I have a friend who is always going on very smugly about how lucky she is that her dog doesn't smell like other peoples' do. In fact her house has a very distinct "doggy" smell about it and if you stroke her dog (lovely as he is) your hand smells of dog.

She says that when he goes she'll neer replace him because she doubts she'd be as lucky to get another one like him that doesn't smell.

I know I won't tell her really but it makes me feel better having said it here.

I have asked DS's friend. He says our house doesn't smell of cat, but sometimes it smells of cooking. Grin He's 11.

Oh that's a relief. He is not really nasty, more handbags at five paces, but some people take offence or are naturally worried that their little pooches will get hurt, or that they will learn aggression, which is how he started. Vicious circle.

I am more of a limp than a walk Grin

Just to say that putting essentials oils or any perume on a dog is very BAD for them and an assault to their senses. And don't get me started on clothes for dogs...dogs need to be dogs, respect their inner wildness. Just saying.

I bought 'dog deoderant' when Jasper was well on the nose. The result? A hideously stinky dog with a cloying, over powering overlay of baby powder. Bleeeeee.

My dog doesn't smell. He showers every morning. And he wears clothes.

I used to walk my dog by the river. In the autumn when the big salmon are swimming up river to spawn the otters would leave their rotting carcasses on the bank - DDog loved to roll in them Shock would whiff for weeks.

Little dog does smell and she's wiry/greasy haired so that may be why. She's asleep now but I feel disloyal even typing it. Tea tree shampoo helps but she doesn't like smelling of it and rolls her eyes for days afterwards. She is the only thing that has ever made me spew as a result of something on the outside - after sharing a car journey with her wearing a particularly meaty badger poo body coating - and she didn't roll her eyes once even though it lingered for weeks. I suspect her view of what smells bad is different to mine and I guess it is a matter for her to decide as it is her body - kindof (provided she is willing to run behind the car if she makes the same mistake again).

Frontpaw · 23/03/2012 11:43

No. I made the mistake of telling my sister that her dog was a stinky, drool-slobberer and she didn't take it very well.
It rolls is horse shit, ffs (although I suppose she thinks they poo roses)?

tigermoll · 23/03/2012 11:53

You HAVE to say something, if only because it will be FUN Smile

My folks have a dog, and are paranoid about the house smelling of dog. They'd bought a kick-ass hoover to suck up the pet hair, and my father turned to me and said expansively and in an expecting-the-answer-no way: 'Now tell me honestly. Does it smell of dog in here?'

I had to say 'Yes it does'. His little face fell.

Stratters · 23/03/2012 11:58

although I suppose she thinks they poo roses

But they do. Grin

chocolatebuttin22 · 23/03/2012 12:09

ALL DOGS SMELL. animals just smell in general. People who have pets especialy dogs, need to get the vaccum out more often and the air freshner and crack some winows, becuase animals do smell.
Your friend needs to realise that her dog is not special, and the snooer you tell her this the snooer she will get out the air freshner and vaccum.

Sausag3dog · 23/03/2012 20:02

One of our dogs does stink a bit because he's old. The young shorthaired one smells deliciously of warm toast. Generally people fuss an awful lot about a little smell. What does it matter? Though I draw the line completely at cat litter.

blighter · 23/03/2012 20:21

i know when i have bo :) and our cats smells! i never knew cats smelt until we got one, i don't think our house stinks though....not of cat anyway, probably of dh :D

OrmIrian · 23/03/2012 20:50

Woah! Took dog out for a dusk walk. Couldn't see what he was doing off in the field. Once we were back on the road I noticed he was glistening oddly in the street lights.....made the mistake of touching him Essential oil of something dead..... He was not allowed in the house until I had run a bath and had to wash him with a clothes peg on my nose. And open all the windows.

Vile vile animal..

NeshBugger · 23/03/2012 21:10

Conversely, our now long-departed cat used to alert my mother to when smelly teen brother needed a shower as it used to obsessively lick his whiffy armpits and try and groom his hair.

NagoosBeenCleaningWindows · 23/03/2012 21:16

my house stinks of pissy bastard IncontiCat :(

eurochick · 23/03/2012 21:19

My parents had a golden retriever and I am sure it only smelled after it had a bath. At that point it would honk of we wool, as would the entire house for a good while. The rest of the time I couldn't smell it.

The cats we had growing up used to mostly smell of my dad's feet. Whenever he took his socks off, they would immediately go and roll around on them. It was very odd indeed.
