AIBU about Hijackers?

I have observed that many AIBU threads are taken over by a certain few members. Particularly if if they think the OP is unreasonable. That's fine - have your say - but why turn it into something unrelated? Some posts are trolling, I can see that and it's unacceptable. I also recognise that the last few days have been a bit unusual. But really, frequent posters, what message are you sending to newbies? "Post on here and we will flame you, then we'll take the piss and hijack your thread". It doesn't inspire confidence in a site which is reknowned for being accepting, supportive and fun. No biscuits please - I don't like them.

I think it very much depends on the intent of the OP lesley. If their intention was to start a nasty bunfight then derailing immediately (cf the wimmin are abuzers innit thread) is by far the best thing to do.

If they are asking for support then a) It almost certainly won't be in AIBU and b)they get that support without being derailed and if it does derail people tend to apologise and get back on track.

So, as far as I am concerned - derailing = positive posting in the best sense.

arf at Pick me Up!

If AIBU were a biscuit it would be a Bourbon.

BareBums · 19/03/2012 23:44

AIBU needs to come with a warning for newbies..

And if it were a fruit it would be a lemon

Thanks to everyone who joined in, a very interesting debate. Mixed opinions as always.

Ah boo I saw this far too late to de-rail it :(

Oh well

Sometimes threads need derailing. It's like an intervention and much needed at times. Nothing like a comedy de-rail when a threads turned frothy

CrystalMaize · 20/03/2012 21:47

Not this one, catgirl. When it's about derailing (or actually hijacking) it's a bit basic to derail it.

Actually, that should be POW?. Gavel.

We had a Derailers quiche for a short while, but we'd never have taken action on a serious or supportive thread. We were all about heading off bunfights.

And duck sex, zombies, Darth Vader's cupcakes and a glittery Jedi cow called Bessie.

Am I the only person who thought that "Naming names is unnecessary, UsualSuspect" was the funniest thing I've read all week? Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/03/2012 12:24

A glittery Jedi cow called Bessie, Empress? Sounds fascinating - do tell!

In reply to CrystalMaize's original post, I agree that some antics on messageboards, not just this one, are less than acceptible. However, you have to develop a thick skin when posting your thoughts and accept that people can, and will, disagree with you, sometimes quite vehemently. It?s hard to get across facial expressions and vocal inflections on a computer and you just have to rely on the common sense of the masses to take things in context.

I started a thread last week that was disagreed with, some posters being more constructive than others, but sometimes you just have to walk away from threads for your own sanity, even if you started it.

She was a lovely cow, SDTG. Had lightsabres on her horns and helped to fight Darth Vader when he came looking for his cupcakes. We'd unfortunately eaten them all but Bessie helped to delay him long enough for me to dash off to the Love Quiche & borrow theirs.
I think she belonged to Sephrenia or PurplePidj and probably got picked up during the zombie raid on MNHQ.
