AIBU about Hijackers?

CrystalMaize · 19/03/2012 20:24

I have observed that many AIBU threads are taken over by a certain few members. Particularly if if they think the OP is unreasonable. That's fine - have your say - but why turn it into something unrelated? Some posts are trolling, I can see that and it's unacceptable. I also recognise that the last few days have been a bit unusual. But really, frequent posters, what message are you sending to newbies? "Post on here and we will flame you, then we'll take the piss and hijack your thread". It doesn't inspire confidence in a site which is reknowned for being accepting, supportive and fun. No biscuits please - I don't like them.

Crystal - I agree with you actually.

I thought this was going to be about aeroplane hijackers

Stratters · 19/03/2012 21:22

Something about hijackers I think. Hmm

Maryz what's your take on kitties v puppies?

lesley33 · 19/03/2012 21:22

I think it is fine for threads to veer off either when the discussion takes a natural turn or towards the end of a thread it often turns into a chat. But I do think its rude to turn it into a chat early on in a new thread.

Lesley - thank you.
Thethersend, please read the post to find the question. Thank you.

I think hijacking is a despicable practice and wants banning.

Shouldn't be allowed.

CrystalMaize · 19/03/2012 21:29

Maryz, this thread was immediately derailed. The subject matter is sensitive. Therefore it gets hijacked.

Maryz - Yes it does get boring reading different people posting about how they think MNers should use this site. But sorry I still think what people have done on this thread is rude.

Yes some of the funniest chats are on threads that are nothing to do with what we start off talking about - but not early on. What normally happens is a flurry of people respond to the post and then as things slow down people start to chat. A good example is the shouting at the disabled man thread in AIBU - and I think thats fine. But I do think people should be given a chance first to actually read and frespond to the question on the thread.

Sarcalogos · 19/03/2012 21:32

Ahem, it was not! I posted second AND I was on topic I just didnt agree with you that's all.

whining about 'other nasty non specific people' brings out the worst in me

Listen. Aren't we all in danger of getting away from the real issue here?

Are kittens really better than puppies>

I think we should be told.

usualsuspect · 19/03/2012 21:35

I think veiled references to other posters is ruder than thread derailing.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 19/03/2012 21:35

What Mary said.

lesley33 · 19/03/2012 21:35

Yes sarcologas your post was on topic.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 19/03/2012 21:36

And what usual said. As usual.

lesley33 · 19/03/2012 21:38

I agree about the veiled references to specific posters - I don't like that either. And no I don't think this is a particularly sensitive topic tbh. But I still think its rude to early on start chatting on the thread about totally unrelated stuff.

Birdsgottafly · 19/03/2012 21:38

Maryz- i have seen threads starting to get derailed before it has developed.

I posted on one thread pointing out that the OP has MH issues, which i don't like doing, but it was getting nasty, the OP in question has anxiety and focuses on one topic, so i recognised her.

There have been others were the OP hasn't been believed, because posters aren't upto date with the news.

LadyBeagleEyes · 19/03/2012 21:39

Kittens or puppies.
Puppies or kittens

CrystalMaize · 19/03/2012 21:39

MaryZ. You do, of course have the choice as to whether you post on this thread or not. If you read my OP properly, you will see that this thread has already tried to detract from it's original purpose. This is my point. If you do not wish to read about it, simply don't.

Birdsgottafly · 19/03/2012 21:39

Sorry pressed to soon, i agree with Lesley and Crystal, it's starting to get tedious and childish.

lesley33 · 19/03/2012 21:40

Lady Hmm

Birdsgottafly · 19/03/2012 21:41

Crystal- at least they have proved your point, you haven't had to.

So who is it exactly that decides what can be posted about and what threads get to stand?

CrystalMaize · 19/03/2012 21:41

My references are not veiled. I am simply prevented from naming them because of the "Talk Rules".
