Gincognito - I think that's a brilliant idea.

WilsonFrickett · 16/03/2012 14:51

Gin I would totally volunteer for that - but think the real issue is why should the clinics have to do that? Surely it would be easier to just stop the protests or to police them adequately. I mentioned up-thread that the EDL wouldn't be able to protest outside a mosque and harass people going into pray, so why is this being allowed to happen?

seeker · 16/03/2012 15:00

The problem with that is the the pro lifers (pro-life,ffs-who isn't?) would infiltrate the volunteers.

technodad · 16/03/2012 15:10

I nearly didn't start this thread, but I am really glad that I did now! What a great response from everyone!

My anger has changed to appreciation!

Christ seeker :(

They'd have to be screened and possibly trained, wouldn't they.

AKMD · 16/03/2012 19:08

woollyideas no I don't think that the church in the article you linked to are justified in promoting the demonstration from the pulpit. I don't think anyone is justified in promoting harassment and intimidation, or upsetting vulnerable people at what has to be one of the worst times of their lives.

In comparison, I am opposed to gay marriage and I will do everything I can to justify that view in the government consultation. I would find it vile beyond words though if a group started demonstrating outside gay marriage or civil partnership ceremonies.

woollyideas · 16/03/2012 19:20

Thanks for your answer AKMD. I appreciate it.

emskaboo · 16/03/2012 20:39

If you are in Vrightin there is the Brighton Pro Choice Group here they are organising 40 days for choice in Brighton to support staff and women attending Wiston's clinic.

amysaidno · 16/03/2012 21:28

I was thinking, if I lived nearby, I would walk in and out of the clinic and engage in conversation with as many of the loons protesters as I could so that they could harass me (I don't care) and give the women who wanted to visit the clinic a chance to walk in, in peace.

Stangirl · 16/03/2012 21:36

There's an abortion clinic near me and a couple of years ago a Christian group took to parading up and down in front of it with placards and singing hymns. One day I was walking by (with my baby in a pram) and they had actually set up a little "stall" with pictures of foetuses. I walked up to them and said I found their pictures and activities extremely offensive and did they have permission to do this on the pavement. They looked dumb-foundedly at me as I phoned the local police station and reported them. By the time I returned from the shops they had gone. proud activist emoticon

CaramelisedOnion · 16/03/2012 21:50

One of my parents friends' are anti abortion, went on the Alton marches in the 80's ect, staunch RC.

Guess what they did when their "gifted" 16 YO daughter (headed for Oxford) got up the duff with her boyfriend?

Yes..off they went to Marie Stopes..

minouminou · 28/03/2012 16:04

Sounds about right, Taxiforme.
However, I have some staunch RC friends who have seven children and refused all diagnostic antenatal testing because "We'll have what God gives us." I, on the other hand, have had an abortion while at uni, these friends know this and have never passed any judgement or asked if I'd considered alternatives.
I pressed the woman one day for her opinion and she said that I was beating myself up - it wasn't for her to judge, only The Big G, and apparently he'd already forgiven me for what I had to do to get by while on earth anyway.

Now that sort of Christian I can tolerate.
Athiests here, but the kind and pragmatic practice of all religions goes a long way.

LucyGoose · 28/03/2012 16:27

My SIL takes part in these types of protests here in the States - unfortunately this happens quite a lot in front of the Planned Parenthood clinic. The catholic church organizes it and the priest even mentions it in mass, they say its only to pray and support the women (with their disgusting bloody fetus placards - right).

My SIL posted a photo of my nephew holding a "Jesus loves babies" type of thing in the church forum, and I was shocked to see that she had taken the kids to the clinic too. I have never told her I saw the photo, but I was really disturbed that she would use the children in this way. Its frightening to me.

minouminou · 28/03/2012 16:31

In the radio interview a female protester had her children wit her. Why would you take your children to a place where there's a chance of violent or frightening outbursts. Why let them see women in distress. Fucking hell....why let them know there's such a thing as abortion in the first place? The child in the background sounded pretty young - 4/5/6....

Frontpaw · 28/03/2012 16:38

I heard that too. I was waiting for a little voice to pipe up 'Mummy... when do hurl more stones at the devil women who are going to HELL?'. Alas, she didnt.

Bunch of loons. Why don't they do something useful? It is short step from actually fire bombing these places and/or injuring/killing people who work there.

These people are vile, it is the individuals choice to make, not theirs and trying to bully women in to keeping an unwanted pregnancy is just disgusting

VictorGollancz · 28/03/2012 17:14

These people are disgusting and should be drummed out of the human race.

For those of you in or around London, there's a counter protest run by AbortionRights: www.abortionrights.org.uk/

It's in Bedford Square at 7pm on Friday 30th March.

If it wasn't almost £100 for me to get to London I'd be there with bloody bells on...

I hope this hasn't been posted yet. For taxiforme and anyone else that's interested in the logic behind her example:

"The Only Moral Abortion Is My Abortion"
mypage.direct.ca/w/writer/anti-tales.html

I believe these are stories from the United States. But they provide an insight into those who oppose abortion until they find themselves in the position that they want one (or have a loved one that wants one), and the rationalising that goes on in their minds. It's a fascinating read.
