THEY HAVE DISCONTINUED MEDISED

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

DS hasn't slept since friday night. Neither have I. Stuffed nose keeping him awake. As a last resort, I went to three Boots on a quest for Medised then at the forth Boots they blithely told me that there was No More Medised. Well thanks medicine people. You bastards.

AIBU to want to go and do a dirty protest at Medised HQ?

The company that produced Medised has been taken over by another company, who had various issues with Medised's formulation etc, and the licenses around it's formulation.

It's unlikely to come back.

CalCold as mentioned above is the same as Medised, but as it's not produced by the same company will continue to be sold.

TattyDevine · 12/03/2012 22:23

So get some Nytol and do your own calpol cocktail

sassytheFIRST · 12/03/2012 22:23

Association with cot death, apparently. So understandably removed from sale.

TattyDevine · 12/03/2012 22:25

I've got some liquid capsules I got in the states called "sleep aid" which is 25mg diphenhydramine. I could sell them in the car park of the Red Lion.

WhiteTrash · 12/03/2012 22:25

I looked for calcold and im sure there was another but they had none of those either.

If not nasal drops, a steamy room. Did bugger all for us though

beautyguru · 12/03/2012 22:25

As far as I'm aware the reason the age restrictions were raised to 6 years was because many parents were overdosing their children on it and also using it as a sedative even when the child wasn't poorly! So again the irresponsible few have made things harder for those of us who do do things by the book.
We used it with DD1 (now 6yrs) when she was 12 mnths onwards, it was the only med that helped her when she had a bad cold and actually allowed her to sleep...guess we won't be using it on DD2 then?!

Faverolles · 12/03/2012 22:25

I have a mostly full bottle of medised that ds can't take, because he turns into a Wild Thing.
I'm open to offers :o

storminabuttercup · 12/03/2012 22:26

Could you use piriton?

Was once recommended to me by a pharmacist.

northcountrygirl · 12/03/2012 22:26

www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/9131315/Shortage-of-household-medicines-due-to-licensing-issue.html

Found this online - maybe just a short term thing?

seeker · 12/03/2012 22:26

It's been discontinued because it's not considered safe.

But don't let that stop you- happy mother happy baby after all.

Peppapigsarse · 12/03/2012 22:27

whispers I was told by a friend who was told by her quack to give kiddies anti-histamine dose when they have a cold the reason medised was so successful was... the anti-h stops the "flem" like stuff sticking to the throat etc.... the sleep factor is just an added bonus...

Now when my dd's get coughs they have vics on feet (Snuffle baby when under 1) put socks on the combo seems to work....

I'll prob get flamed for this but took DD to docs today about a rash and asked for the tops I could give anti-h (bad rash on trunk) and was told 6 x 2.5ml's (She is 4.5yrs) but the bottle says 3 x 2.5ml's for the same 24hr period..... always worth a check ..................

northcountrygirl · 12/03/2012 22:27

sorry - cross posted

BupcakesandCunting · 12/03/2012 22:28

Tatty, why would you get flamed? You've been perfectly reasonable. :)

I bought the Benylin Night as I have a cough myself and medised used to work for me when I used to have a sly swig or 6, so thought this might work for me if I am feeling cack. Would any of you give to a 5 year old or would you not risk it?

OP posts:
HOMEMADECHUTNEY · 12/03/2012 22:29

I wouldn't have any problem giving a '6+' medicine to a five year old. these recommendations are based on average weights of children, so you could have a small six year old being considered fine to have something, while a larger 5 year old wouldn't which obviously makes no sense.

QuintessentialyHollow · 12/03/2012 22:29

It is because children and babies have died using Medised. Basically parents give them to children younger than six, and for longer periods, possibly using it as a sleeping pill, which has resulted in overdosing, and the kids die from liver/kidney damage.

I got the story when I bought a large bottle a few weeks ago.

The chemist looked at me sharply :"You are not going to give it as sleeping medisine, are you?" I admitted it was for night time use, due to bad cough and blocked nose. But my son is 9.

BupcakesandCunting · 12/03/2012 22:29

He's not a baby, seeker. He is 5. Hmm And since I don't have any, I can't, so wind your neck in.

CuntyQuiche · 12/03/2012 22:29

I wonder if this is linked to not being able to buy Paramol at the moment (paracetamol & dihydrocodeine)...

mumofjust1 · 12/03/2012 22:31

Otrivine infant nose drops are really good - clears snuffly noses in minutes and lasts up to 10 hours. I always used it for dd, and dp uses the adult one as he can't blow his nose Hmm

Faverolles · 12/03/2012 22:31

I gave it to ds two whole weeks before his sixth birthday Shock
Like I said, had the opposite effect on him and turned him into a rampaging beast for nearly 24 hours!
Is that because he was too young, or just an odd reaction?

dontlaugh · 12/03/2012 22:31

Tatty, your indepth knowledge and makey upppy drug recipes sound great! I for one am glued. The sure tone when suggesting mixes/cocktails makes me hope believe you are a pharmacist or a mother of toddlers

CuntyQuiche · 12/03/2012 22:31

Ah, that'll be it then Blush

BupcakesandCunting · 12/03/2012 22:31

Ohhh, I sent DH for Paramol for me a few weeks ago and he tried 6 chemists and failed! It says on the links ^ that Paramol is affected.
