THEY HAVE DISCONTINUED MEDISED

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

DS hasn't slept since friday night. Neither have I. Stuffed nose keeping him awake. As a last resort, I went to three Boots on a quest for Medised then at the forth Boots they blithely told me that there was No More Medised. Well thanks medicine people. You bastards.

AIBU to want to go and do a dirty protest at Medised HQ?

I'm it sure anyone would stand by and watch their child suffer Ledkr.

bumbleymummy · 13/03/2012 21:55

Not*

ledkr · 13/03/2012 22:02

hmmm im not so sure.

Thumbwitch · 14/03/2012 09:25

I take ibuprofen when I have a cold - reduces the nasal inflammation, so helps. DS gets calprofen when he has similar PLUS TEMPERATURE - if no temp then he gets nothing but I do burn various oils in the bedroom at night.

For adults (and older children), try this - if you force yourself to breathe through your nose, you can. Only one nostril at a time, but rather than let you suffocate, your nose will clear a nostril so you don't die. I didn't believe it when someone told me, but I did try it and it does work! If you never start mouthbreathing then you don't need to. It can get a bit hard at times but it really does work, for me at least and the person who told me about it. (OBviously not on a small child!)

fishandlilacs · 14/03/2012 11:35

i have just bought 2 bottles online. I use it to help me when I have occasional insomnia.

TheBigJessie · 14/03/2012 11:46

It's definitely true what thumbwitch said. I found it out a few years ago. It was a revelation, after spending my childhood frantically blowing my nose , because I was scared I would die otherwise!

If you works best if you llie on your side, as then your body seems to always clear the upper nostril.

Oh, and another thing. If one is happy to believe parents are over-using medication, just so that they can sleep themselves, why not be happy to believe that parents, who are honestly concerned for their children's health are under-using medication, because of fears of side-effects, or feeling worried that they will interfere with the natural immune response.

All it requires, is to take a slightly more extreme approach than some posters in this thread, and set the bar higher.

My mother subscribes to the above, more extreme approach. She treats everything with essential oils basically. No, I tell a lie, I got 2-4 aspirin for the greenstick fracture in my arm!

You should have heard her, when I mentioned that I'd given her ill grandson Calpol! "Oh, you use that do you? But he's so little! He's too young for strong stuff like that"

boschy · 14/03/2012 12:17

Thumbwitch it is possible to breathe through one nostril, you are right. But, it's not very pleasant is it? When I reach that stage of bunged-up-ness the breathing through one nostril is not enough to keep me asleep, so I end up getting up very very early in the morning just so I can breathe. Hence I take a decongestant before bed...

On the subject of medicating or not - and I have and will give mine whatever I believe is appropriate to alleviate their symptoms - I had a work meeting at someone's house once. She didn't believe in using medicine, preferred homeopathy and essential oils, and her five year old was off school with an ear infection, being looked after in a different part of the house by an older sibling. I was there for four hours and he SCREAMED throughout. It made me want to cry for him.

TattyDevine · 14/03/2012 12:20

I'm just imagining Thumbwitch and BigJessie lying on their sides, lips turning blue, forcing a tiny stream of oxygen through their swollen nostrils while their brain cells rapidly die and their organs start to fail, lying there chanting "I will not let that naughty nostril win! No I wont!" Grin

Honeydragon · 14/03/2012 13:15

Speaking as some one who was over medicated as a child (no accusation to anyone on this thread before anyone gets uppity) the long term effects totally suck.

feuerandwasser · 14/03/2012 13:42

Calcold is still available online.

Can't believe they have stopped making medised....rotton bastwards!

Thumbwitch · 14/03/2012 22:29

Ah no Tatty - you see that's why I take the ibuprofen, to reduce the swelling in the nasal tissues! Wink

I usually manage to sleep fairly well but when it's really bad it is hard to sleep with it, yes. And sometimes I give in and breathe through my mouth and then massively regret it.

ClodiaMetella · 20/03/2012 19:50

My dd has had medised all her life when she gets a really rotten cold; she's 16 now but still takes it rather than "adult" medicines. Today I tried 5 pharmacies and as she advised me to, said she was 11. I was lied to and given a load of s*t from 5 stupid pharmacists, and eventually elicited the fact that the thing that alleviates her symptoms has been withdrawn.

I shall now go online and buy the drugs from the USA; you can buy pretty well anything from online pharmacies there and it doesn't do the Americans any harm does it?

Remember the wonderful adults only cough mixtures with tincture of morphine, for a really hacking chesty cough? Would never give those to anyone under 16, but managed to get ingredients in USA and now have bottle. Hope I can get USA friend to replace when it runs out, though it lasts ages as one or two doses usually sees off a bad cough, not like the rubbish British chemists sell!

Hebiegebies · 20/03/2012 19:57

I don't think it's fair of them to discontinue it without explaining exactly why. I discovered only yesterday that medised is Gone.

I managed to find some online last night in just one place. However, now after reading this thread and stories of children dying I am afraid to give it to them - why in that case have they not withdrawn the lot?

I never, ever give medicine to a child who is just sleepless. It annoys me that a few irresponsible parents make life harder for those of us who only medicate our children when they are ill!

Feminine · 24/04/2012 10:20

Those of you hoping to get cold meds for their kids from the states, be warned..its going/gone the same way there.

Nearly impossible to buy anything cold/ allergy for the under 6s also...

:)

NarcolepsyQueen · 05/05/2012 18:00

Update! Update! Just bought some Dozol (in the UK) and the ingredients are EXACTLY the same as Medised Grin

alistron1 · 05/05/2012 18:20

Was anyone else dosed up on actifed as a kid? That was some good shit.

scaevola · 05/05/2012 18:41

If you google, you can find out that Medised is still licensed for over-6s, but there is an (unspecified) issue with the manufacturer, who has suspended (not discontinued) production. There are local shortages. But it could reappear at anytime.

The licensing for OTC (not doctor recommended) use for under 6s was because a review of the evidence concluded that the additional effect was slight and did not justify the risks of fatal heart arrhythmia or complications from depressing respiration in a small child who already has respiratory symptoms. Doctors can still recommend/prescribe it (or similar drugs). But I, for one, am very glad that medicines for children are subject to ongoing scrutiny.

The 'inattentive parents overdosing' is a remarkably persistent urban myth. The evidence base for withdrawal for under 6s is widely available, and the change in age guidelines has also been implemented in many other countries.

DumSpiroSpero · 05/05/2012 18:43

Haven't read the whole thread so don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but Benylin Childrens Night Coughs medicine is the business for over 6's. They do a normal version for younger kids too although I don't know what that's like.

scaevola · 05/05/2012 18:49

Here's the text of the Telegraph article linked above, which includes the announcement from the manufacturer when production of this, and other OTC medicines was suspended following the takeover of one company by another.

The new owners do intend to return it to production when the licensing issues are resolved (and it all sounds more administrative than safety).

"A shortage of Woodward's Gripe Water has seen prices increase for the last remaining bottles with some going on auction websites for three or four times their face value.

Production has been stopped while licensing arrangements are checked and wording on the packaging may need to be amended.
It has now emerged that a wide range of household products are affected, including Earex to soften ear wax, Remegel for indigestion, and Resolve for stomach upsets.

The products were all owned by SSL which has now been bought by Reckett Benckiser and checks made as part of the acquisition have raised questions over the validity over the current licences held with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

Manufacture of all the products has been suspended while the issues are cleared up and each will come back onto the market as soon as possible, a spokesman for Reckett said.

She added: "When Reckitt Benckiser acquires new licensed brands a review of the quality of those licences is a priority action to ensure compliance both with the RB?s own quality standards, and with any licensing requirements.
"RB?s acquisition of SSL brought a large number of new niche brands into the RB portfolio, many of them licensed, and over recent months every product within each of these ranges has been individually reviewed.

"As a result, RB identified technical and administrative irregularities with the licences in a number of products.

"The company therefore made the decision, as a precautionary measure, to halt the manufacture of the products concerned until the necessary remedial action was taken and approved by the MHRA ? the licensing body. One of these products was Woodward?s Gripe Water. There is no suggestion of any safety issues however, and products already in shops and homes can continue to be used.

"RB regrets any inconvenience this necessary action has caused to the public and pharmacists, and is working closely with the MHRA to address these matters as quickly as possible. RB takes the quality of all its products very seriously and this is always the company's first priority."

The products affected include: Paramol, Syndol, Remegel, Merocane, Merocets, Ralgex, Medised, Earex, Cuprafen, Melthus, Resolve, Diocalm, Derbac, Medinol, Burneze, Waspeze, Compound W."

snailz · 07/06/2012 12:05

hi all, my daughter is autistic and has terrible sleep issues, the paeditrician told me it was ok to give her a low dosage a couple of times a week so we can get some sleep. she is nearly 4 years old. i know alot of you will not agree with this but we have tried every method to get her to sleep, including visits to a specialist sleep clinic and melatonin. he told us that the age for this was 2 years old, its only recently it was changed to age 6 as parents were using it every night in much higher doses. im looking for a debate here or for anyone to start flying off the handle, im just saying in some rare cases it is actually the only option. if both my gp and paediatrician are ok with me doing this and agree it safe to do so in low dosages i dont see a problem with it.

snailz · 07/06/2012 12:07

sorry that was meant to say im not looking for a debate lol :)

ladylee1979 · 30/06/2012 08:57

hiya yes ive had the same problem medised is no longer avadible in the n.e lincs region having tried 6 chemist lloyds told me the maufacturer who make medised have gone bust they are hoping to be bought out and continue as normal but no promises so in the mean time everything they make is no longer being dispatched i was told calnight has a sedative effect like medised but ive been unable to find that either, some antihistimines and cough medicences have sedatives in but its finding the right one and yes medised is now from age 6 upwards even though ive been using it years.

TrudiRed · 30/06/2012 09:02

I was told the manufacturer has been bought out but there were discrepancies with paperwork for some of their products so the new company is not making any of the old companies products until everything has been checked. I have also used CalCold as a replacement - I can get it in my local chemist no problem. It is also from age 6.
