THEY HAVE DISCONTINUED MEDISED

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

DS hasn't slept since friday night. Neither have I. Stuffed nose keeping him awake. As a last resort, I went to three Boots on a quest for Medised then at the forth Boots they blithely told me that there was No More Medised. Well thanks medicine people. You bastards.

AIBU to want to go and do a dirty protest at Medised HQ?

So what exactly are you arguing with me about if you agree that you shouldn't give it for a slight cold? I personally wouldn't ever give it because it's not recommended for under 6s anymore and I'm happy enough with the alternative methods that work for me and mine. If what H said was true then it does feck all anyway so what exactly is the point?

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 13/03/2012 20:09

I had to chuck a bottle of Medised after giving one dose to DS when he was 6. He went really weird, could't stop talking, really hyper, said his brain was racing and couldn't sleep - it was quite frightening.Took me completely by surprise as DD had had it a couple of times when we were dealing with severe nightmares ie. The type that didn't respond to a dreamcatcher and got her a referral to CAHMS.

bumbleymummy · 13/03/2012 20:10

Rhinos I've never used any of them anyway.

ledkr · 13/03/2012 20:11

bumbly So im not the only one who didnt believe you, even your gp friend didnt Grin
The point i make about children dying from childhood illnesses is to illustrate how far medicine has come. And actually most common childhood illness deaths were from fevers which couldnt be lowered causing fatal damage to the body. Calpol wont cure measles but it would ensure some of the measles symptoms are minimised.
We also vaccinate our children to avoid them getting the diseases too harshly.
If your children are lucky enough to still be fighting fit with a high temp then you dont need to give them any meds but most children feel awfull and most parents would like to reduce their childrens suffering when ever possible as they would do for themselves.
Actually calpol is more likely to make my dd wakefull but i still use it if she is feeling poorly.
I dont think i know best in this case i know i do. My dd had pneumonia when she was just 6 days old.She was given calpol in the ambulance to bring down her temperature and alleviate any discomfort she maybe in and be unable to communicate.I was not worried about interfering with the bodies natural defenses,i was relieved to think that any pain she m,aybe in would be easier for her.

Reallyfaroutlookinghat · 13/03/2012 20:11

I take two of them an all. In America, you can have 100 milligrams. It didn't kill me in America so I'm assuming it won't here.

BupcakesandCunting · 13/03/2012 20:11

Because I haven't given it for a slight cold, then you and your chum DoingHousework go all cat's bum mouthy and "well naturally, I wouldn't give little Eugene anything other than a herb infusion and butter applied to the temples for a slight cold" when none of us Medised users have said we give it for a SLIGHT COLD.

oiwheresthecoffee · 13/03/2012 20:15

Ah well thats ok then. Thought i was being a risk taker for awhile there Wink 2 worked quite well actually.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 13/03/2012 20:17

I would sincerely hope that most parents would know the difference between a snuffle and a more serious problem that requires medicine.

For example from my experience only, DS(5, nearly 6, usually fit and well child) will have the usual standard colds, not often a cougher, with a slight temp rise, I will give olbas oil to help sleep, plenty drinks and rest, that's all that's required.
BUT he has recently had tonsillitis with a high temp, lethargic, very very congested, miserable as sin, so we went through more Calpol in 4 days than possibly in the last 4 years as well as doc prescribed antibiotics. In fact the GP said to give Calpol as needed to keep him comfortable, as he will, and I quote "heal better and faster if he is rested and comfortable". This seems totally common sense to me. It is appropriate medication in my mind, and I am quite a hippy chick really.

Course those parents who would risk liver damage to their kids by Calpoling them every night so the parents can get a longer lie are arseholes, utterly and completely, and I don't think anyone on this thread is suggesting or doing that themselves.

Bupcakes, hope your wee dude is better soon.

ClaretCake · 13/03/2012 20:19

Waving a little white flag... another genuine thread gone all scary Confused

Good old fashioned Vick rub works for both my DS's, especially so when they were very small - Put a blob of the gel on a piece of tissue or cotton wool and place it on a radiator or high up on a dresser and it will gently infuse the air with menthol to help breathing.
Alternatively, if your DC's nose is really blocked, get some menthol crystals from the chemist and sprinkle a few in a small bowl and pour on some hot water. Place well out of reach or, to be on the safest side (if you'd prefer not to actually leave it in the room), just walk around the room carefully wafting it buddist monk stylie to infuse the air. Both these tricks worked for us most of the time. Ordinary calpol at regular doses should help with keeping the fever temp down. Been where you are and am feeling your sleep-deprivation pain - hope my ideas might help a little Smile

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 13/03/2012 20:21

Ah took me so long to post on this stupid iPad that thread had moved along quite a bit .....

SherlockHolmes · 13/03/2012 20:25

Reallyfarout - my sleepeaze tablets are 25 mg each, and the dose is 2.

Medised is 12.5mg per 5 ml spoon. x4 makes 50 mg. Also, Medised can be given 3 times a day, whereas Sleepeaze quite clearly says no more than 2 tabs per night.

Bupcakes I understand what you say, but what I really meant was that I was pretty surprised that a 6 year old child could have 50 mg, but that my packet said for over 16s only, as if it would be harmful if you were under that age.

Definitely thinking twice about giving Medised to DS (9).

Hecubasdaughter · 13/03/2012 20:25

In what way have I been a sanctimonious bastard? I have only explained why I don't use these products and don't recommend them either. BTW when I have a cold I don't take sudafed, lemsip etc.

Reallyfaroutlookinghat · 13/03/2012 20:26

Did someone say crystal meth? Oh no, menthol crystals. That's much more sensible.

BupcakesandCunting · 13/03/2012 20:29

Thankyou Claret and toomuchmoney :) He is improving and just has his horrible cough to contend with now!

Well Ledkr, she was there at the time so she couldn't believe her own eyes! :)

As far as children dying/being damaged by fever goes - The temperature would have to be sustained over 42 (107.6 iirc) degrees for that to happen and fevers from illnesses do not get that high - they will rarely exceed 105. The only danger is if the hypothalamus has been compromised by something like heatstroke or poisoning.

Bupcakes, I don't think we actually mentioned anything about butter and herbs...I wouldn't give medised for anything though.

BupcakesandCunting · 13/03/2012 20:41

"Get in the fucking sack" Grin

lilbitneurotic · 13/03/2012 20:44

topknob · 13/03/2012 20:49

I used medised once before it became for over 6's only..both my girls who were about 4 & 5 at the time got nose bleeds..really bad :( dd1 had a lump of bloody stuff appear out of her nose during this and I had to pull it out :v never used it again x

Honeydragon · 13/03/2012 20:58

Oh FFS when did you lot get the buns out? Hmm

ledkr · 13/03/2012 21:02

Well i love modern medicine and would certainly never stand by and watch my dc suffer when there was an alternative and neither would i. I seriously dont believe there is anything to be gained from not giving a medicine that is appropriate for the child and i will continue to do so as i need to.
Now shall we talk about the over use of amoxillin? Only joking.Night all.
