to really not identify with the feminist boards on here, when i always thought I was a feminist

seems so joyless and anti sex.

I feel very conflicted now. I always thought feminism was about equality for women, which I dont believe we have, but it seems to re\lly be focusing on the wrong issues for me, and getting too much into dynamics of personal relationships, and peoples sexual preferences

im probably being unreasonable

No ming - the personal attacks have been deleted.

Because it is against the rules of MN to personally attack other posters. There are plenty of criticisms of the FWR section left standing, such as people saying they didn't feel welcome - and of course these posts should remain because they don't break the guidelines. It is quite simple.

I think it is really great that there have been so many posters come on and say positive things about the FWR section. Thanks to all those who did that.

I'm sorry there seem to be people put off the section because of weird events such as racist comments made against abuse victims, hate mail or aggressive comments about SAHMs. I suspect you have interacted with a troll or one of those random nasty posters that unfortunately pop up everywhere on MN. As I said earlier on the thread, it seems unfair (and odd) to lay the blame for these events on the FWR section as a whole. Areas where women discuss feminism tend to attract that sort of nastiness - I have been on the receiving end of it countless times. It is a shame but just one of those things. Personally it makes my support of the feminist movement stronger.

Report those posts then ming, the ones you find offensive.

You don't find the joyless anti-sex stuff offensive? The stuff in the OP? You think that's a nice polite way of talking about people?

Beachcomber · 12/03/2012 09:30

It is quite eye opening how cross some people are getting because they are not being allowed to personally attack regulars on the FWR section Shock.

I repeat my thanks to MNHQ for their rigorous application of the talk guidelines on this thread.

Beachcomber · 12/03/2012 09:32

MNHQ do tend to read through a thread when there have been a few reports on it - they may well delete posts that have not been reported when doing so (troll hunting type posts for example which are rarely reported).

TheMerchantOfVenom · 12/03/2012 09:38

What's your problem, exactly, mingofmongo?

What do you want to say, that you're not allowed to?

TheMerchantOfVenom · 12/03/2012 09:40

And again, please show us some examples on this thread of feminists being rude and abrasive. Posts that should have been deleted, according to you.

Perhaps it would be a good idea if someone from MNHQ could post on the thread to clear this matter up?

ShirleyKnot · 12/03/2012 10:24

"all the opposing posts" were deleted?

Gosh.

Again - ming and whatmeworry - you are perfectly happy for people to be described as joyless and anti sex? I think there's an anti-men one in the thread somewhere as well...

You're happy with that, right? Just so that I'm clear.

Sanjeev · 12/03/2012 10:25

I am not sure whether a male perspective will be welcome here or not, but it's a public forum, so here goes.

I have begun to read and post on the FWR board in the last few weeks. I have always been interested in politics, so it has been enlightening for me, to say the least! I try to make it clear that I am a man, and I think that raises a few hackles, but I guess it is bound to.

At first, I did take some of the criticism to heart. You can feel under attack. However, in any form of political discussion, this can happen. You have to develop a thick skin and try to engage with those who are being reasonable.

Forums like this are a great way of sharing ideas, and lend themselves to people who are broadly in agreement. They really don't work well when there is conflict, particularly in areas where there is a huge amount of detail and nuance. The lack of face-to-face means you cannot tell the other person's intent - sarcasm, aggression, deliberate WUMmery etc. Hence people 'assume' a lot of stuff, get wound up, and it descends into mud-slinging and huffery.

People do get very passionate about their politics, and passion can make for poor debate, but that is unavoidable. If I had one thing to suggest about FWR, it is a bit cliquey, and maybe that is why some people here feel a bit 'outside' what can be a pretty sparky and interesting part of MN.

In the spirit of inter-gender detente, I offer you all a jammy dodger Biscuit.

Please don't kill me!

PlumpDogPillionaire · 12/03/2012 10:27

The OP didn't in fact describe people as joyless and anti-sex, Shirley.
The OP said that the FWR section 'seemed' that way - and went on to say (s?)he was probably BU.
I really don't think this was an attack.

PlumpDogPillionaire · 12/03/2012 10:29

Was it the actual pixels on the screen that were being described thus then Plump?

Because the board is the posters isn't it?

And furthermore, I bet I couldn't "get away" with saying something like "Poster A seems to me to be really miserable and never has sex, I'm probably being unreasonable though" Or wqould you also be comfortable with that?

PlumpDogPillionaire · 12/03/2012 10:32

I completely agree, Whatmeworry.

Have a Biscuit and Brew
... not that I prefer them to sex, of course. Not me! The very suggestion...

ShirleyKnot · 12/03/2012 10:35

Is that right Whatmeworry?

Is there some new software out then that can help you feel other people's feelings?

Any namecalling by rad fems () or ANYONE should be reported to MNHQ - if you've been called names and personally attacked you should definitely either report it, or NOT report it and then you could prove what you're saying with more ease.

PlumpDogPillionaire · 12/03/2012 10:37

I believe it was the OP's general impression of the FWR section.
I'm a regular poster there, I don't feel insulted by the OP.

Whatmeworry · 12/03/2012 10:40

Naah, I prefer it to stand, in all its frothing finery :o

And no, I wouldn't be upset being called joyless and anti-sex. Because I know I am not, and - more to the point - I know my post demonstrate I am not.

Nyac · 12/03/2012 10:40

Well in the last couple of days I've been called vile, arrogant, dangerously predatory and manipulative. Just for my feminist views.

I haven't been attacking anyone.

I think a whole lot of this is projection.

ShirleyKnot · 12/03/2012 10:46

I would mind being called joyless and anti-sex, even though I am neither. I'd mind being called a racist, I'd mind being called hostile and aggressive, I'd mind being called a homophobe - I am none of these things either.

Let's stop pretending and twisting and turning and saying that it's OK, it's fine for people to insult, belittle and discredit a whole section of MN when really it's just trying to upset people and be nasty.
