WIBU to tell my friend that her decorated cakes are not THAT good?

Lueji · 08/03/2012 10:43

Says it all, pretty much.

She has just learnt cake decoration and has done a good job, for a beginner. But she is really smug and everyone is treating the cakes like the 8th wonders.

Am I too demanding (perfectionist) and unreasonable if I don't join the chorus of how good they are?
Or should I point out the defects?

Or are most people really useless at cake decorating and are really impressed with any decent effort?

She has just brought in a cake for another friend's daughter and some of the decorations are smudged but it seems that everyone is raving.
Also pointing out that my sis has made much better cakes.

Oh, who am I kidding? I won't tell her, obviously, just need to vent here my frustration over not telling her. Grin

oh dear angst about cakes Grin her cakes are being admired for the hard work she has put in try go on you know you want to Wink

LentillyFart · 08/03/2012 10:49

Yuk. You sound pretty ghastly tbh. If you're so bleeding clever why don't you make some cakes?

GrownUpNinjaWarrior · 08/03/2012 10:49

I don't rave about how good my cakes are, except regarding taste (because I bloody love my cakes) but I would be devastated if someone pointed out that there were smudged decorations and such, I haven't got great fine motor control due to illness that makes my hands unsteady.

But I am always proud of my cakes, because to me they are an achievement.

sherocks · 08/03/2012 10:49

Sorry to let you know but you just have outed yourself...I'm the friend in question...consider yourself defriended.

PacificDogwood · 08/03/2012 10:49

Did you see the thread about 'how shallow are you?' Grin

Lueji · 08/03/2012 10:50

That's why I won't do it.

I am actually a good friend, see? :)

More seriously, do you think that you are really cocky about your efforts people will rave more about them? Mostly because they would be embarrassed not to?
But if you are less confident (but the same product) that people will actually tell you the truth?

What are your decorated cakes like? Do you decorate cakes? If not, you are in no position to criticise. She should be encouraged, not made to feel small by someone who might be able to do it better.

TattyDevine · 08/03/2012 10:50

Oh I know what you mean OP, when someone does something and everyone bangs on about it but you just think, "eh?" like the emperor's new clothes or whatever.

Tis mean though, but you know that! Enjoy the flaming Grin

jumpingjackhash · 08/03/2012 10:51

Can't you just appreciate the fact that she's doing something nice?

Tbh I'm crap at decorating cakes, so am impressed at anything but even if I was great at it, I'd still be polite about someone else's efforts.

I take it you're still happy to eat any cake she offers you?

Kennyp · 08/03/2012 10:51

A crap cake is a travesty. A friend of mine made crap and expensive cakes. I stopped eating/ordering.

No help whatsoever, sorry.

diavlo · 08/03/2012 10:51

Gosh, you're not very nice are you?

Debsbear · 08/03/2012 10:52

No need to rave over them, but no need to point out defects either. Tell her you'll reserve judgement until you've tasted it. She'll take it as a joke, and you get to eat a cake! Everyone's a winner

Proudnscary · 08/03/2012 10:52

Email her?

Dear X

Your cakes are shit.

My sister's are much better than yours.

Sincerley, Lueji

ifancyashandy · 08/03/2012 10:53

Am I the only one who read Sherocks post?!? Shock

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 08/03/2012 10:53

My cakes are 'exceedingly good' Wink

OP, if someone showed me a cake they made, I would probably compliment it regardless. I am useless at cake decorating, most 3 year olds could probably make a better job of it than me. It would be shockingly rude to say it was smudged (even if it was)!

Anyway just don't tell your friend you think her cakes aren't very good. Could it possibly benefit anybody?

ebbandflow · 08/03/2012 10:54

I'd just laugh about it and hope that she doesn't open a cake decorating business.

harrietlichman · 08/03/2012 10:54

TattyDevine said it best - we all know someone that makes us go Confused at their brilliance/dc's brilliance etc....but there is an old-fashioned way of thinking that says 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all'
What would you gain from pissing on her bonfire?

PointTheFinger · 08/03/2012 10:54

Ifancyashandy - i've seen it too!!

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 08/03/2012 10:54

Sherocks is possibly NOT the friend in question...????????????/
