To be a bit disappointed in Kate Middleton?

When visiting Fortnums, apparently she talked about what a struggle it is to make tea properly with "dried tea leaves". For someone who has not ever worked full time, had dependents or any particular constraints apart from media interest, I thought she might be a bit more interesting and competent. She still seems to spend her time giggline and hair flicking and being generally self conscious.

Awww she's alright.

Winkly · 02/03/2012 23:50

YABU

The whole world is watching her. That would make most people self-conscious.

She was out to tea with the Queen, she was hardly going to start a debate about the feminist merits of Cosmo magazine or talk about Ciffing her fanjo.

hurricanewyn · 02/03/2012 23:52

I would looove it if she started talking about ciffing her fanjo!

oikopolis · 02/03/2012 23:53

i thought that quote sounded vacuous too.

though i'm not disappointed in her. she's just some pretty girl married to a fellow who's famous through no fault or design of his own. i expect nothing from her except to behave politely really... nothing more than i would expect from any stranger on a street corner.

she might have been dreadfully nervous. i certainly would have been. she could have just ignored everyone and preened for the cameras, at least she tried to make conversation, however gauche it sounded...

HalfPastWine · 02/03/2012 23:53

She was probably bored stiff.

ItsOnlyAQuestion · 02/03/2012 23:53

Who She?

AgentZigzag · 02/03/2012 23:55

'Who She?'

Are you paying for every word you post ItsOnly?

Casmama · 02/03/2012 23:56

Oh ffs! Can the poor girl not do anything without being judged? She was trying to have a relevant conversation based on the position she was in at the time who the fuck are you to judge whether she is interesting or competent? Did it ever occur to you that you have never even met this person and have formed your views based on the media portrayal of someone? Self conscious - why on earth would she feel self conscious?

ItsOnlyAQuestion · 02/03/2012 23:56

Yeah.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 02/03/2012 23:56

Oh for goodness sake - how do you think you would 'perform' under that much pressure?

AgentZigzag · 02/03/2012 23:56

Fair enough Grin

Archemedes · 02/03/2012 23:58

Poor lass her life must be stressful enough, who are we to be disappointed?

Jacksmania · 03/03/2012 00:03

Really, a university graduate and she can't figure out how to make a pot of tea using loose-leaf tea? Confused

I can only tell you what I see from halfway across the world, but she does seem a little, well... plastic. i don't know. I don't mean fake, but sort of... two-dimensional. She sort of reminds of those cut-out paper dolls that are held up by little paper tabs. If you squint at them they look like real dolls, and then you turn slightly and see they're paper cut-outs.
Where's the depth to her that she presumably has?

But, OTOH, Chipping's point is completely fair - how would any of us come across if we were under that much public scrutiny?

VelcroFanjo · 03/03/2012 00:06

She was in a posh shop with her step-mil and hr gmil..bet she would have scoffed more of the chocs had they not been there, and had a good look in the lingerie department Grin

EdithWeston · 03/03/2012 00:09

"any particular constraints apart from media interest"

Well, looking at the practices mentioned in Leveson, that's hardly a trivial matter.

Mrsgradgrind · 03/03/2012 00:10

Does anyone ever look at her eyes and notice the hardness behind them - I think she is calculating and ruthless

LeBOF · 03/03/2012 00:12

I think you might be over-thinking this, Mrsgradgrind...

breatheslowly · 03/03/2012 00:13

What do you want her to have said in the middle of a trip to Fortnums? The tea thing was at least relevant. Though why it takes 3 royals to go to Fortnums when they are able to visit hospitals on their own is a bit of a puzzle.

Winkly · 03/03/2012 00:15

"?I would really like to learn to make the perfect cup of tea, as when I last made a pot of tea with dried tea leaves I got it very wrong,? Middleton told a Fortnum employee."

With the whole world listening, what would any of the critics have said to the Fortnums employees? What else would she talk about? Seems like a friendly and self-effacing thing to say when making small talk. Why does being a uni graduate make any difference? Not a lot of tea making skills needed for Art History.

HalfPastWine · 03/03/2012 00:15

I agree with Mresgradgrind. I reckon Kate is planning to take over the world

Jacksmania · 03/03/2012 00:15

I don't know if it's actually her eyes that look hard, but I do think her eye make-up is a bit shit. That dark liner around all of her eyes does make them look a bit hard.

suburbophobe · 03/03/2012 00:16

"Waity Katie" has agreed to take on the role that was allocated to her.... (and family).

No more, no less.

Same shit, different day. Grin

After all, gotta keep that Royal Family going!! {shock horror, imagine the alternative!"}

Wake up, sheeple!

oikopolis · 03/03/2012 00:16

maybe William always makes the tea.

Winkly · 03/03/2012 00:17

Yes I agree the eyeliner is a bit hard looking.

Jacksmania · 03/03/2012 00:17

at "maybe William makes the tea"!
